Archive - February 2008 Why Am I Here?Posted Feb-06-08 16:21:05 PST They say you spend the first half of your life collecting stuff and the second half getting rid of it. Guess which half we're in? Donna and I have both been readers since the time we could first pick up a book and have probably never thrown one away. There isn't a room in our house that doesn't have a book in it. When your daughter grows up and gets a Masters Degree in Library Sciences Information Technology and becomes assistant director of a library chances are you read way too much! My love of science fiction started at an early age. My father was a science fiction fanatic and most of the vintage paperbacks I'm selling he bought new. He was a reader and at the time he bought these books no one really collected them. He just never could get himself to throw a book away either. Picture my dad as a young boy in the '30s and '40s and as a young man in the fifties buying science fiction books at a time when science fiction not only wasn't considered "literature" but was frowned upon in many circles. Right up there with comic books. I grew up with stacks of books around the house and have maintained the family tradition. I've read just about every book we're selling. When my dad passed away I inherited his book collection. When my mom passed away I inherited her book collection. So we are now the proud owners of an 1800 square foot warehouse we used to call home. Donna bought a box of Q-Tips the other day and we couldn't find room for them. They're out in the shed until we sell a few more books. Some of the books we're selling are collectible, but all of them are readable. Short stories were the backbone of early science fiction and I've got an extensive collection of short story anthologies that I'll be listing from time to time. Personal opinion here! Although science fiction novels were great, some of the best short stories ever written were in the science fiction genre. Read Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Fritz Leiber, Isaac Asimov and so many others to numerous to list and see if you don't agree. So along comes eBay to solve my quandry. An opportunity to place these books that I've loved for years in the hands of people who will appreciate them and make a few bucks in the process. What more could I ask for. We haven't been selling for long, but I've enjoyed the interaction we've had with our customers. We've gotten to know a few, had a number of return buyers, and in general had a lot of fun. We're not a big company, just Roy and Donna trying to sell some stuff. We'd appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks to one customer early on we learned a lot about carefully packing and shipping, and other comments have helped us reduce our shipping costs. Thanks to those people! To those who have left us really phenomenal feedback, thank you! We're going to do our best to constantly increase the quality of our photos, descriptions, pricing and packaging. I've just gone three paragraphs past boring, so it's time to wrap this up, move a cat off a pile of stuff and get back to listing items and figuring out what to do with our new eBay store. Thanks again to all of you Roy and Donna
