Most Recent Posts What a Wonderful New WorldPosted Aug-10-06 08:05:15 PDT My uncle (85 years old) was in the army fighting the Nazis during WW2. After the war he brought back some souvenirs as momentos including a German soldier's helmet and a bayonet and many other small artifacts.Like most others he packed his goodies in a box and relegated them to the basement in storage. The box and artifacts survived many moves over the years and basically remained forgotten. His wife, my aunt passed on two years ago. He decided to sell their home and when packing up to move to a new home, he discovered the box. First he offered the bayonet to his four children, who declined. He then paraded the items to various shops who ostensibly dealt in such military trivia and was offered no more than $10 per item for those artifacts he held in such high esteem. He was about to throw them out when lo and behold, it was suggested he try to sell them on ebay. Not familiar with either ebay or computers, he sought help from the grandchildren. They took photos, typed out his descriptions diligently, posted the items auction and he sold his artifacts for over $1,000.00, a sum which in this circumstance made a significant difference to him. The moral of the story is that it became abundantly clear that a high number of golden agers who are in desperate need of money, have accumulated tons of treasures which if disposed of at liquidation rates yield nothing of consequence, are not availing themselves of ebay, The new ebay stores will definitely be of help. The Ican free internet cafes and learning centres in Canada are teaching large numbers of seniors to use computers with patience a good courseware. Perhaps Ebay should consider availing their fine services more easily or readily to a whole aging population who have the time and goods to list and many with money to buy items. Not all seniors are fortunate to have patient grandchildren like my uncle. It is a very scary world of electronics that face the seniors, a world that with some patience can be opened up and used in so many ways. |
