Why I collect vintage hardware

The computer industry has lost its way.

In the 1970s, personal computers were built to allow people to develop and run their own software.

Now, most people buy closed systems and are dependent on vendors for software.  And the software takes ever more memory and disk space.

This has to stop - it's not really sustainable, because complexity is the enemy.

While GNU and Linux are the best counterexamples, they still depend on the hardware companies to make the goods.  And the hardware companies often refuse to share information that's needed to write software drivers for the latest gear.

This is why I maintain a collection of vintage hardware, as well as emulators.  To show people what was done in the past, because it still matters how efficient your code is.
