Most Recent Posts Water Activated Golf Grip TapePosted May-26-08 18:08:56 PDT I've bought a lot of the Tommy Armour Silver Scot clubs and have slipped the grips on 3 sets. Once I got the grips off, I found they'd been installed w/water activated tape. Well, a majority of the paper part of the tape stuck to the grips. The residue left on the shafts is some gooey looking mess. I ended up using a torch to get it burnt to be able to get it off. Recently, I tried to reinstall some of these grips on other clubs. I'd washed them out with mineral spirits and soaked them in water, but the tape wouldn't come out. I then read on a Golf Forum page that Goof Off is a good thing to use. Well, I used Goof Off and then washed the grips again, rinsed them with mineral spirits again and final rinsed them with IPA. I installed them with new solvent activated tape on a customer's Ping irons and 5 of 9 grips wouldn't stick. The water activated tape leaves a residue that evidently can't be removed. There's some folks selling these grips on Ebay. Beware!!!! They won't stick to regular tape. While they're nice grips, they're about useless unless you have some water based tape to install them with. Mike Thompson
