This is once more your Israeli friend Jedadaya reporting to you live from Israel! As you might already know, the Israeli high holidays (ROSH HASHANA , YOM KIPUR and SUKOT) as well as the new Hebrew year (year 5,779 according to our count) are just around the corner on the end of September! These holidays are famous for the foods in them (planty of meals!), so naturally people have to do a lot of shoppings! But this years the prices of commodities worldwide are treathening the budgets of Israeli familys. Already, few months ago when the price of rice "in the markets" rose more than 30%, out Israeli newspapers where quick with these news and the monopolistic supermarket chains together with the monopolistic food makers were even quicker the increase their prices, heftingly! The problem with Israel is that when the prices of rice (as well as the prices of corn, wheat, oil webd down all the way back our newspapers and witted local food makers and sellers just forgot to inform us and are trying to keep their high prices. Good evening or morning everybody!

The Jewish High Holiday are an important tool in the hands of the Israeli worker on almost every payroll! When asked to do almost anything these days, the Israeli worker looks upwards an earnestly say: "After the holidays!"\! The problem with Israeli is that you get to hear this "after the holidays" 2 month before the holidays actually arrive! SHANA TOVA everybody!

SHALOM everybody! This is once more your Israeli friend Jedadaya reporting to you live from Israel! There is going to be real fun here in Israel in a few days: the High Jewish holidays are back again! After a short summer break the Jewish holidays are back with vengence! It will all begin again on the end of September with ROSH HASHANA - Hebrew for the new Hebrew year (the Jewish calendar follows the moon (and not the sun like the Christian one). This new Hebrew year will be the year 5,769 according to the Jewish cound (yep, we were here much more time before Jesus!) Exactly 10 days after ROSH HASHANA (also known as the 10 days of redemtion) we will have YOM KIPPUR - in hebrew "day of forgiveness" when we fast and pray all day long so our sins will be forgiven and 2we will earn a remitence for life on earth. And a few days after wards we will have SOOKOT (in Hebrew "shanty towns) when we are supposed to built shanty towns and live in them for a whole week in memory of our people fleeing Egypt. This all means many days of vacation and a great sense of excitement in the Israeli along with the customery increments of prices of foods, clothes, aprtments and what have you! Good morning (or evening) every body! More to come...

A story from the holy land - IsraelPosted Aug-17-08 10:27:27 PDT SHALOM there, This is your friend Yedidia reporting to you once again live from Israel! Say, have you ever heard about the BABA SALY? The BABA SALLY was a great and famous Rabbi and a miracle maker of the the North African Jewry. The BABA SALLY was born in Morroco and came to Israel. He died in Israel in the 1980's but his figure and the stories behind him are still revered today by many Israelis and other people. Whenever I think of Israel and Israelis it reminds me of an old joke with the BABA SALY: A man walks into a FALAFEL joint in Israel (FALAFEL is a traditional, and sometimes tasty, fast food of Israel's area of the world), well a man walks into a FALAFEL joint in Israel and asks the man behind the stand: "Say is this FALAFEL Kosher" (Kosher is the Jewish standards of food we can eat (KOSHER) and not eat (not KOSHER), for example: pork is Then the man behind the stand makes an insulted face expression and tell back to the visitor: "Sure it is, look here I have a big photo of the BABA SALY hanging on the wall behind me!" To this the visitor replied: "I would rather see there on the wall a photo of you and have the BABA SALY make me my FALAFEL!" So next time someone from (or for) Israel try to talk to you with photos you had better keep an eye on the falafel he (or she) is trying to sell you! Until later
