Introduction, The Artist behind the curtain.Posted Mar-20-08 21:30:44 PDT Updated Mar-20-08 21:44:48 PDT OK, here is the skinny. I am an artist with obligations. Expected of my work is a certain subject niche for sure, and a certain look. It's all good and I love what I do, but where is the freshness if you can't deviate once in a while? How do you grow as an artist unless you play a little? And another thing, ebay is fun, but if you just bought a $900 painting off of my website, how would you feel if you saw my work offered on ebay with a low opening bid, depending on the lookers during that auction even a great painting can end up closing (thanks to snipers!) for a crazy low price. Not for me either. Nor do my license agreements or gallery representation look highly on such a situation. A lot of ebay artists who springboard off of ebay into national recognition stop selling here, and I can tell you, you miss it! However, selling artwork on ebay, watching it accumulate bidders and watchers is great fun! So is painting just for fun without any expectations or obligations, but I can't offer these on my website, they don't fit in with my body of work. My answer to this is as follows: Choose a genre that is not my norm. (This would not conflict with current buyers on my website.) Something I can experiment with, do small fun studies which won't cut into my 'obligation' painting time. Offer them signed, but use a 'brush name'. This gives me the ability to do anything with paint and canvas without thinking about expectations. (You know eventually this will be revealed, but not right away. I guarantee it will be in time for your family to take it to Antiques Roadshow!) It's one of those cliche win-win situations. I get to enjoy the fun of painting just for fun and watching auctions, (I don't care how much they close at), you get to buy original artwork for a song. I've decided on landscapes that focus on color and brushwork, creating a mood. All works will have an opening bid of $1 and free shipping. You just bid because you like it, not because you are influenced by a resume or name. Oh, and each piece will be numbered in order, signed and dated, and come with a certificate of authenticity. They will be done almost daily, but hey, I've got a life you know! |
