Displaying Vintage Jewelry

What do you do with the vintage jewelry you collect?  Do you wear it?  Do you display it?  Do you craft with it?

I remember last year at Christmas time, there were several ebayers selling the COOLEST shabby chic type Christmas trees that were laden with vintage jewels.  They were absolutely STUNNING!  In the last thread, an ebayer said she creates new jewelry with the old, mixing the old and new together - very clever!

There are a few pieces that I really, really want to keep and wear . . . but they would really require an evening dress and night out!  I don't have the occasion for events like this anymore.  (Hmmm . . . maybe I need to create some.)

I'm thinking I want to display some . . . right now that means it is laying out on black velvet waiting for a buyer or photography.  There must be a better way!  I plan to redo my bedroom with a boutique hotel theme using my Grandmother's antique bedroom suite.  Maybe I can create a couple shadow boxes with my favorite pieces?

Tell me, tell me . . . what do you do with your vintage jewelry?

They were just too cool. They took small tabletop sized Christmas trees, spray painted them in a pastel shade and just clipped on the earrings and draped the necklaces (I'm sure they were secured in some way) and they were absolutely stunning. I don't think I would have every thought of this!

They were great sellers too!

Alberta_arts - Do you wear vintage clothing with it? Vintage jewelry is so expansive, what kinds to you wear? I have some that would blend well with today's jewelry styles, but then there are the poodle pins and large art deco cocktail rings that stand out as original!

I have a ton of beautiful vintage dresses, most I can't fit into these days, but I'm working on it. I usually throw on a nice rhinestone necklace with just about anything. Adds some lovely sparkle to an otherwise dull outfit of a black button up and black slacks. I call them 'princess necklaces'.

If the hip little chicks downtown are any indication, vintage jewelry is all the rage--and that means rhinestones in the daytime, with jeans. A super look is a jean jacket decorated with oversized brooches. Faux pearls are coming back in force. My daughters love it when I decide an old pearl necklace is too worn to sell. I put on a new clasp, if necessary, and they wear them in bunches. I turn broken vintage jewelry into new jewelry. My prize pieces are on display. I have a *paintings* made of vintage jewelry, one of birds and another of butterflies, framed and under glass. I used a black velvet scarf as a background and covered it with more jewelry and hung that on the wall like a little jeweled tapestry. I also have a collection of vintage hats that I can pin jewelry onto. I rarely wear any jewels other than my wedding ring, but I'm addicted to vintage jewelry. Each is like a little piece of art.

Great, great ideas!! I have seen a lot of younger girls (teens to 20's) wearing what appears to be vintage brooches on their purses.

I don't have a lot of room to display, but your idea made me think of maybe embellishing a lampshade with brooches.

My potbellied bedside lamps wear necklaces and pendants.

Almost forgot. I have a collection of vintage jewelry boxes. I keep them out, with jewelry nicely arranged, so I can open them up and admire, or show them off. It's like surprise art. It's a hoot when a visitor lifts a lid and their eyes go wide at seeing all the dazzle.
