Reactions To The New HPV Vaccine Gardasil Are Escalating

Reports of adverse reactions are on the rise - one particularly difficult to hear story is of the 12 year girl who lost all feeling in her leg and collapsed two weeks after receiving the Gardasil vaccine. 

What's worse, people who are injured by the vaccine can't even sue Merck, the maker of the drug, because it's part of the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund.  (Don't get me started on why it's necessary to have a National Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund.)

Several thousand reactions have been reported, from paralysis, dizzy spells and seizures and yes, several deaths.  And the really sad thing is, of the over 100 types of HPV, only one third is the type which can cause cancer, and of all the different types, the body's own immune system clears the HPV infection naturally over 90% of the time.

Oh, and one more thing . . . the Gardasil vaccine only protects against 4 of the over 100 types of HPV.  - That's right, only 4! -  It hardly seems worth the risk, huh?

Waterlogged Yet?

It seems those who have been forcing the 8 glasses of water a day have met their waterloo . . . okay, enough with the water jokes.  But it seems the need for extra water has been exagerated somewhat.  Mike Howard of diet blog  reports researchers from the University of Pennsylvania did a study of the issue and report up to 6 glasses of water can be taken in from food alone.  They offer the following guidelines to help:

Estimating water needs

  • There is a large variation when it comes to individual water needs. Those who are active have increased water requirements, especially if exercising in hot weather.
  • As a baseline, 1L of water a day (about 3 glasses) should be fine for those individuals who are relatively sedentary.
  • Increasing water intake to 1.5-2.5L/day (4-5 glasses) per day is a good idea if you are moderately to highly active, and drink a few gulps every 15-30 minutes if exercising in hot weather.
  • If you are exercising for longer periods of time (going on a long hike, as an example), be sure to consume some salt when consuming large quantities of water.
  • If fat loss is your goal, make water your primary beverage - aim for 75% of your fluid consumption, while cutting back on juice, pop and other calorie-containing liquids.
While most of us should drink more water than we do, (replacing all those sodas, diet sodas, fruit juices and coffee would be a great place to start) if the thought of 8 glasses of water a day make you gag, take heart.  Follow the baseline and have those 3 glasses and rest easy.

Don't overlook the importance of vitamin D

The major function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.  Without it bones become brittle, or soft - we become more susceptible to colorectal cancer and a whole host of other medical problems. 

In the United States, most people living on the mainland north of Texas are deficient in this nutrient except a very precious few who work outdoors.  Because of the latitude of most locales the sun's rays are just not direct enough for most of the year to provide the
Ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight which provide the vitamin D synthesis in the skin.
