Three comic book movies- hold the spandex...and this week's comicsPosted Jul-02-07 09:32:20 PDT Updated Jul-13-07 07:55:34 PDT
Every year, Hollywood releases a crop of superhero movies that brings some much deserved attention to comic books. This year we have Spider-man 3, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Ghost Rider. While these high profile flicks wear their comic book lineage on their sleeves, three other films- not readily recognized as originating from comic books- are this year’s true comic book films to watch out for. Without a superhero in sight (at least not the traditional mask and costume kind), these three films are reminding audiences that comic books are not always synonymous with superheroes. 300- (Action) The already released sword and sandal spectacular was a rollicking fun ride that challenged everyone’s idea of how movies should look. This movie has changed moviemaking forever. The DVD will be out soon. And I can’t wait! (DVD Release date, July 31) Stardust- (Fantasy) If an illustrated story is: · released by a comic book company (DC Comics’ Vertigo Imprint) · in comic book pamphlet-sized format · includes elements and ideas that the author (Neil Gaiman) previously honed in his comic book masterpiece (Sandman) · is drawn by a renowned comic book artist (Charles Vess) · but does not include word-ballooned text floating over the characters’ heads …is it still a comic book? I say “yes,” mostly because I desperately want to claim this story as one of comic book’s greatest fantasy creations (see my review of the novel). Though most critics who have seen the movie say it will be a tough-sell to audiences, these same critics have given the film glowing reviews and hope the producers find the correct way to market to their target audience (everyone!). With a wonderful cast (including Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer), an awesome (comic) book as source material, and overwhelmingly positive buzz, this movie should be bound for greatness! (Release date: August 10) 30 Days of Night- (Horror)- 30 Days… is the story of what happens when Vampires take-over an Alaskan town that experiences 30 straight days of night-time darkness every winter. After seeing the movie Insomnia, I swear, I came up with this same idea! Too bad I didn’t have the sense (or talent) to write it down! Vampires translate great on screen, so audiences should be prepaired for a spectacular movie! (Release date: October 19) The superhero movie onslaught may be over for the year. But be sure to check out the other genre films originating from the wonderful world of comic books!
COMIC BOOKS I’M BUYING THIS WEEK…
ACTION COMICS 3D #851 ALL STAR SUPERMAN #8- the two months between issues of this book just doesn’t come quick enough! All Star Superman #7 was a cliffhanger (the series’ first multiple-issue story), so it has been especially excruciating! DARK TOWER GUNSLINGER BORN #6- I’m a notoriously slow reader. As a result, it can take me weeks to finish a novel. And though I love the Dark Tower comic book, the text pages in the back of the issues are killing me! It can take me 45 minutes to an hour to finish an issue! But it’s always a satisfying read. DETECTIVE COMICS #834- Issue #833 had a big unexpected surprise twist that’s explored in this issue. It’s nice to see that even in today’s market- with spoilers and over-zealous advanced solicitations- occasionally the reader can still be rocked by a surprise story element that comes straight out of left field. FALLEN SON DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA IRON MAN MARVEL ZOMBIES ARMY OF DARKNESS #5- This is the last issue of the series. I’m sad to see it end. I’ll definitely be there for the next chapter in the Marvel Zombies line. MIDNIGHTER #9 PUNISHER PRESENTS BARRACUDA #5- Another mini-series that ends this week… Something tells me Punisher bad guy, Barracuda, will easily survive this mobster, drug lord tale. But his rematch with the Punisher himself (either in another Barracuda miniseries or in the Punisher’s monthly title) won’t be as easily won… WHO WANTS TO BE A SUPERHERO FEEDBACK- This should be fun…
THANKS FOR THE PURCHASE…
I can always tell its summer by counting the number of comics I collect. It happens every year… Publishers increase their output of titles in hopes of enticing vacationing readers with idle time on their hands. You can tell from the number of titles listed above that this strategy works wonders on eager fans such as me. Fortunately, a few enthusiastic enablers have made sure I have enough cash to fund my comic book habit throughout the next few weeks. Thanks jjscrowbar, mysilv12, dongpound, crailowr087, j_yoders, wolfiechand, theoriginaltjmd, and display25!
