I love technology, The Dave Matthews Band, & Heroes! ...Plus this week's comic books!

On Friday (9/28), The Dave Mathews Band rolled into town and gave an awesome performance!

This year was especially enjoyable. First, my wife and I got really good tickets off of Craig's List! Second, I was finally able to make good use of my cell phone's video capability! And third, I posted my first video on YouTube!

If you navigated to this blog via my Heroes comic book listing, my previous blog post may be of more interest. But those of you who navigated to this blog via the link in my Dave Matthews Band CD Case listing may appreciate the short clip below.

Hopefully, all visitors to this blog can appreciate my excitement over my first YouTube clip! Capturing, downloading and embedding the video was surprizingly easy. The video and sound quality of my phone is horrible, but hey- I'M ON YouTube!!!

Isn't technology wonderful...

O.k., back to our regularly scheduled program...

COMIC BOOKS I’M BUYING THIS WEEK…

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #7
CONAN #44-
This title is actually ending and restarting after issue #50.
ACTION COMICS #856- "Bizzaro am terrible character! Me HATE this comic book!"
DETECTIVE COMICS #837
JLA HITMAN #2- I never would have thought the "Bloodlines" annual crossover event storyline, published more than 10 years ago in several DC Comics Annuals, would actually have significance in today's DC universe. But this fun Hitman story makes good use of the Bloodlines legacy. Like every Hitman comic that came before, this book is written by Garth Ennis...
MIDNIGHTER #12

WHAT I’M SELLING…

NBC's Heroes is the best show on television! But the story doesn't end on the tube. Check out my rare, San Diego Comic-Con exclusive comic book currently up for auction! And if you're interested in more Heroes comic books, check out last week's blog post!

After attending an awesome concert and posting my first YouTube video, I thought I’d list this rare DMB concert memorabilia to help justify showing-off the video in my eBay blog! The CD Case is a really cool collector’s item. If you’re a DMB fan, don’t let it pass you buy!

NBC Heroes returns... But were they really gone? And this week's comic books

HEROES RETURN… BUT WERE THEY REALLY GONE?

The NBC hit, Heroes, is finally back on television (Mondays @ 9:00)!

The show's hiatus made for a very looong summer. Fortunately I had the comic books to keep me occupied.

“What’s that?...” “You didn’t know there was a Heroes comic book?”

Well, let me tell you, “You’ve been missing out!”

Since Heroes debuted on NBC last year, every week there has been a companion comic book released online. These comic books (usually 6-8 pages long) introduce new characters before they appear on the television show, add to existing plotlines, and give interesting back stories to many of the show’s regular and supporting characters.

If you haven’t been reading these comics: you didn’t witness DL escape from jail; you never saw Jessica (Niki) take-out DL’s crew; you are unaware of the back-stories of “the company’s” Eden and the Haitian; you probably have no idea who Hana Gittelman or Betty are; you never saw how Claire came to be part of the Bennet family; you don’t know how Linderman and the Petrellis became so interconnected…

...If you haven’t been reading the online comic books, you don’t know these and many more secrets of the Heroes universe.

Lucky for you, the comic books can still be read at NBC’s official Heroes website. The first season stories are being collected to be published in hardcover graphic novel format (for Nov. release). As a result, they may not stay available online indefinitely. So check ‘em out, fast!

Speaking of graphic novels…

Several traditional-format, non-online Heroes comic books have already been produced as promotional giveaways, and have become highly desirable collectors’ items. The only way to get a hold of these babies was by attending press events, Universal Studios screenings, special creator signings and a couple of comic book conventions (another comic book was recently made available as a Best Buy exclusive, with the purchase of the season one DVD).

Because of the comic books’ limited distribution and supply, they command BIG bucks here on eBay. My set (including five, of the seven, different comic books) recently sold for over $600! And a more recent sale of only four of the books netted close to $900!!!

For those who want to own exclusive souvenirs from the show, the give-away comic books are awesome collectors’ items . And if you want to read some great Heroes stories that you can’t find on TV, you really need to visit the NBC site and check out the graphic novels!

My suggestion... Hurry-up and place a bid on my comic book, then head over to NBC.com.

You’ll be glad you did!

COMIC BOOKS I’M BUYING THIS WEEK…

ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #7
BATMAN #669- Yaaaay! Grant Morrison!
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #13- I hope Dwayne McDuffie is as good as Brad Meltzer
SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL #6- What? Really? This book still exists? ...Talk about no respect for a decent release schedule...
WONDER WOMAN ANNUAL #1- Forget it! I was gonna buy this, but I don’t wanna have to dig through my collection to find and re-read the previous Allan Heinberg, Wonder Woman issues. DC Comics and/or Heinberg blew-it! Leaving readers waiting for the for final chapter of a storyline for more than a year is inexcusable. So this book will not be getting my moolah!
IMMORTAL IRON FIST #9
MARVEL ZOMBIES BOOK ANGELS DEMONS & MONSTROSITIES- Is this an actual story, or just a profile or pin-up book? I’ll buy if there’s a story involved…
WIZARD MAGAZINE #193- Gotta know what's going on in the world of comic books.

Death of Superman/Doomsday DVD Review, 30 Days of Night and This week's comics

SUPERMAN/DOOMSDAY DVD MOVIE REVIEW…

During this year's Comic-Con International: San Diego, I attended an advanced screening of the animated movie, Superman/Doomsday (available on DVD Tues., Sept. 18).

Very early into the film, it became clear to me (and I suspect, to others in the audience) that this animated version of Superman was very different than previous versions.

I’m not just talking about Superman’s physical appearance (which, with some very pronounced facial-lines, does make the character look significantly different from other animated incarnation). I’m talking about the whole overall "vibe" of the film.

The way the characters spoke and their relationships were noticeably mature. With my two sons sitting at my side, I was acutely aware of the few (mild, yet unexpected) curse words. And the alluded to “adult” situations, involving Superman and Lois Lane really took me by surprise.

The violence was also a lot more extreme than I was expecting. Considering Superman/Doomsday is an adaptation of the famous “Death of Superman” storyline from the classic Superman #75 comic book, I guess I should have known what to expect. But the motion-less fight images I remember from the comic book seem a lot less intense than the moving images, as translated on-screen.

And the onscreen deaths!!!...

Because I read the comic book, not all the deaths in the movie came as a surprise. But I was surprised at how graphic they were. And there was one death, in particular , that left me wide-eyed and jaw-dropped in disbelief (I won’t spoil it for you, but you'll know it when you see it).

I must admit, had the film not been animated, I probably wouldn’t have been so taken aback by its maturity. You’d think shows like The Simpson, King of the Hill, and Family Guy would have prepared me for the possibility of more adult situations in animation. But heck, this is Superman! The character and his supporting cast never behaved in such a manner on the Saturday morning and the WB cartoons. And certainly, no one ever died on screen!

Superman’s Boy Scout image, “black and white” morality, supporting cast and situations have always been preserved on the animated television shows. But what I failed to take into consideration as I watched in awe, is the undeniable fact that Superman/Doomsday may be animated, but it’s certainly NOT made for television. As a result, the gloves were off...

…And despite what I've written so far, I think that’s ok.

In fact, I really appreciated and enjoyed this movie, And I have every intention of buying the DVD this week.

The movie was exciting and action packed! And the characters showed real emotional depth.

The fight scenes with Doomsday were amazing! In Superman #75, instead of the traditional multiple panel layouts, each comic book page was drawn as one image spread across a single or double page, to emphasize the magnitude of the fight. On the screen, the fight seemed even bigger, and more earth-shattering!

As I watched Superman/Doomsday at Comic-Con, I was unaware of its PG-13 rating. Because of this, I had different expectations for the film. Had I known about the rating, I might have chosen to watch it without the kids, to judge its appropriateness. With that being said, I’ve nevertheless decided I will let my kids watch the movie again, once we own the DVD.

The movie isn’t gratuitous or over-the-top in any way. Unfortunately, by 7-years-old (the age of my youngest son), kids have heard plenty-worse curse words than the words uttered in this film. And at their current ages, my kids are totally oblivious to the alluded to “adult” situations. However, this time, after the movie is over, we’re going to have a discussion about why sometimes good people do bad things and the consequences of death and taking a life.

Thanks to Superman Returns, Batman Begins, X-Men, Spider-man and a few other live action superhero movies, the general public is becoming much more accepting of the idea of the superhero genre as a genre capable of mature stories. Unfortunately, non-comedic, American animation is still widely seen as a form of entertainment exclusively for children. And until that perception is changed, many people who encounter superheroes in animation will continue to automatically assume these offerings are intended as juvenile entertainment (Heck, that was my impression before I actually saw Superman/Doomsday!).

Superman/Doomsday is the first, in a series of straight-to-DVD movies adapting classic DC Comics stories. If the other films are as good as this one, Warner Brothers (DC's parent company) are sure to have several hits on their hands.

Marvel Comics tried with their Avengers, Iron Man and Doctor Strange straight-to-DVD animated releases, but with Superman/Doomsday, DC Comics actually succeeded, and we are seeing the birth of the mature animated superhero!

Get out there and buy a copy, so we can insure there will be more to come!

Oh yeah... You should read the comic book too!

30 Days of Vampires and this week's comics

With the warm temperatures outside, it may feel like summer, but this year’s summer movie season is definitely gone. For comic book fans, this means we need to find some way to pass time until next summer’s Batman: The Dark Knight and Iron Man take over the multiplexes.

Judging from the poor box office receipts for the movie, Stardust, many fans can still look forward to the first viewing of that (critically acclaimed, yet poorly marketed) comic book adaptation on DVD in a couple of months. But fortunately DVD isn’t our only outlet for comic book adaptations until 2008. This year Hollywood has held back one of 2007’s most anticipated adaptations for a fall theater release.

On October 19, the movie adaptation of the horror comic book, 30 Days of Night makes its long-awaited premiere.

30 Days of Night is the story of a group of vampires who decide to take advantage of the dark season (30 days of continual night-time during winter) in a small town in Alaska. The comic book’s simple, “Duh! I should have thought of that,” premise, captured readers’ attention immediately. And its beautifully horrific artwork sets a gruesome tone that (according to reports) has been faithfully reproduced for the movie.

Almost from the moment the book hit the stands, there has been talk of adapting it for film. And five years later, the film is finally being released!

This one is NOT for kids or the faint-of-heart (I don’t know how I’m gonna convince my wife to see it with me…). The previews look C-R-E-E-P-Y!!! Horror fans are gonna REALLY dig it! And comic book fans will have one more successful adaptation they can point to and say, “I TOLD YOU!”

Columbia Pictures (movie studio) was smart to hold-off releasing 30 Days…until later in the year. The movie perfectly sets the mood for Halloween, and is destined to become a holiday classic!

But before you go see the movie, it should go without saying that you definitely need to read the book first.

…And I know just the place where you can find an awesome, collector's edition copy of The Complete 30 Days of Night.

Guitar Hero 3 and this week's comics!!!

Last week was my son's birthday. While at the video game store to pick up a copy of Madden 2007 (yeah, that's right, 2007! Its gonna be quite some time before I can afford 2008!), I was fortunate enough get a copy of this awesome poster for the video game, Guitar Hero III.

My son loves Guitar Hero, and he's really good at it. Whenever we're at Costco, we have to pry him away from the store's demo. And when visiting a family friend who owns the game, he monopolizes the game for almost the whole visit.

I want to get him the game, but at $80, it's not happening without some help. The money from the sale of this poster is going to his Guitar Hero fund.

There's a couple of hours before the listing ends. Hurry and place a bid!
