Johnny Depp and Neil Gaiman on Sweeney Todd... and this week's comic books

What is it about Johnny Depp that attracts him to such strange characters? He has made a career of playing some truly eccentric oddballs (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Captain Jack, Willy Wonka, and now Sweeney Todd). And he plays them so well... Is it because he's such a good actor or is it because playing an eccentric doesn't require much acting from him? Hummm? Something to think about...
Anyways, Sweeney Todd looks really interesting. I've never thought I'd ever be dragged to the movie theater to see a musical. But I have to admit, I've seen and enjoyed Chicago on DVD several times. And I think I'll give Sweeney Todd a chance.
Besides, the image from the poster released at Comic-Con is WAY cool!

But I'm The Comic Book Junkie, and you may be asking yourself, "What does any of this have to do with comic books? Well... nothing really. But this movie makes me long for the Sweeney Todd comic book adaptation started (but never completed) over 15 years ago in the anthology comic book, Taboo.
The adaptation was by Author Neil Gaiman and Artist Michael Zulli (Anyone familiar with "The Wake" storyline from The Sandman series knows when these two collaborate, they create magic ). The first chapter was released, and then the book was put on the back burner. In an old interview I found here, Gaiman briefly mentions the project:
Now in limbo is SWEENEY TODD, the legendary demon barber of Fleet Street. The story, to be drawn by Michael Zulli , was supposed to see print in the horror anthology TABOO. “In a perfect world,” Gaiman said, “we would find a very nice publisher who would give Michael Zulli lots of money so that he can live comfortably, and after some time Sweeney Todd will come out as a 400-page book. But since that can never happen, we will be working on it a little at a time and it will probably be serialized somewhere.”
Unfortunately the adaptation hasn't been heard from since the first chapter. Probably because it was not financially feasable for the artist.
Maybe if this movie is a success, the duo will be prompted to start working on the book again...
