Greed is GOODPosted Aug-24-08 16:24:56 PDT Updated Aug-24-08 16:25:25 PDT Gordon Gekko said it best in the 1987 film "Wall Street". People are greedy and generally these days so much so because we are so incredibly spoiled by fabulous free software. Here is yet another golden goose egg-rumpelstiltskin-Santa'selves-freebie-justfelloffatruck-toogoodtobetrue find: http://free.avg.com Now why have I been paying for anti-virus software all these years? No more... My current anti-virus just expired and along comes this white knight, thank you very much for the goodies. I feel like I just looted a jewelry store. F3 (a/k/a File Format Frustration)Posted Aug-01-08 21:14:44 PDT Converting files from one format to another is a pain in the tukas. I find that really frankly a waste of time and truly annoying. The file standards out there have certainly helped and we all know how to use PDFs now but I do remember a day when that was not a file standard and people didn't know what it meant. I have found a really good tool to help morph files into different types. Zamzar is a cool website that offers free file conversion. Just point to your local hard drive, find the file and tell the site what format you want...presto! I was skeptical at first, but it worked like a charm and with all the rar and tar and whatchamacallit formats out there, this is a blessing, so try it. Free! Being Flashy Isn't Always GoodPosted Feb-17-08 14:40:08 PST I'm constantly impressed with the gorgeous
(ok better word...cool) Flash movies I see on websites. Being a
hobbyist graphic designer myself, I know how hard it is to work in
Flash and the amount of time needed to produce really cool and
impressive Flash movies. What I have learned over the years is that working in Flash may impress many people, but too much of a good thing can hurt your website badly. As Vice President of Immersa Marketing, I am responsible for reviewing corporate website content for notable companies such as Kathy Ireland Worldwide, Visa and so many more of our clients, and I see more and more inexperienced web designers using Flash to the death of their clients' sites. I actually had to help consult on SEO for a website that had one (yes one) html page with an embedded Flash movie that provided virtually 100% of the site navigation. You want many pages...no...you need many pages on your site to get the most of the benefits that are found through indexing in search portals such as Google, Yahoo and the rest. This case study website was bad...no text on the page, just Flash "text" which is not really text at all, rather a picture of sorts in the Flash movie. Although being Flashy may impress people, content is so critical to your site and making it work really well in terms of discover-ability across the internet. You can certainly flavor your website with a little flash movie here and there, but the actual content in the page will be required to get high-ranking on the search portals. Most people come to your site to obtain information not to watch a big-budget Hollywood movie. Google is known for their elegant site simplicity and it works. People want to get information, read it quickly and move on. Forcing a site visitor to wait for a long Flash introduction is a mistake when all they want is a tidbit or two, contact information or some basic "stuff" from your website. If you really want to get the best out of your e-commerce strategies, I would suggest you attend Online Market World's trade show in the Fall and attend the informative sessions, network with experts and see how the big companies optimize their websites and get the most out of the internet. I presently consult for Online Market World (disclosure) and do so because it is a great concept, an excellent show and I believe in the need for advancements in knowledge and information exchange in the online community. |
