Help me pick my next ebay guide topic

How about helping me decide what I should write about next?

I just finished writing a couple of ebay guides this week about coin photography and I'd like to start another guide next week. Of course, it's going to be something about photography, but I'm open to suggestions.

Here are a few topics I've thought of...

  • Using Light Tents (you know, like those fabric cube things, for getting softer light)
  • Choosing and Using a Tripod
  • Different Ways to Take Close-up Photos
Those are just off the top of my head. You can either comment on those or suggest some others.

If you'd like to see my other guides, including the new ones on coins, here's the link

I have a Nikon 5400 and I don't understand how to use the manual adjustments for taking Ebay closeups. I also just bought a D-flector and am having a hard time with closeups using it. Thanks

It appears close-ups are the top issue. I guess I'll get to work on that guide.

I have a tent and could really use some tips on using it correctly. I have a hard time getting enough light in it. Also, any information on taking white items inside the tent?

Thanks!

It is nice to see guides that really help us and give us information without being just a way to direct me to someone's store. I would buy from you because of your knowledge.

texcyngoods - I think I'm going to do the close-ups guide first, followed by the one on light tents.

Meanwhile, I'd recommend only lighting your tent from the outside with one or two lights. The amount of light should not be a problem. If you are getting dark looking photos, that's more a matter of adjusting the exposure on the camera, not the lights. You should use the camera's exposure compensation control to do that.

winchuckseller - Thanks for the positive comment. I really should get some items listed which tie in with my guides. Athough that's not the main reason I wrote them, it would be nice to see a little ancillary income from them. :-)

I just sent you an email (I didn't realize you had a blog). I have to agree with winchuckseller - your guides are an excellent resource for other sellers and you don't seem to make the hard sell to buy from you. I guess that is true excellence in marketing - you're the first place I'll go now for camera accessories - I'm going to add you to my favorite sellers list today.

I would like to see a guide on close ups as well as light tents. I'm not sure I have a really good understanding of how to actually take the picture using a plastic bowl with a hole in it. How do you stabilize the camera? (sorry if that is a ridiculous question, I'm still a newbie at this whole thing.

Anyways, thanks again for your help.

Anne!

If you use a plastic bowl as a light tent, you should really use a tripod or other firm support with it. I didn't show that in my illustrations.

With luck and a steady hand, though, you can sometimes get by with just steading the camera lens against the edges of the hole in the bowl. Not a great solution, but it works for some people.

I guess I better not vote for tripods and mess up the schedule, LOL.

Camerajim, bravo on your guides and your blog!

There are many artists (and I am one of them) who would be very grateful for tips and advice on photographing artwork that incorporates metallic paints. I would be happy to send you some artwork to photograph if you choose to create a guide on this topic. Just shoot me an email with your contact info, if you want! Thanks! :)

Same here, Camerajim! I am looking for help with this subject of the iridescent paints and around 40 artists have responded in my art groups so far. Most of it I have already tried, but I could be missing something, too.

Lots of artists are looking for answers to this one!!

I've never tried shooting anything like this, but I'm always up for a challenge. If you'll pay the shipping both ways, I'd be happy to give it a try on a sample item. I'll email my contact info.

Hi Camerajim! :-)

I'm finally getting ready to buy the Canon A620 you recommend, but I see some things from a few sellers that are raising red flags. For instance one newbie seller is selling the A620 listed with a BIN of $240 with free shipping. The price seems reasonable enough, but he doesn't accept Paypal, so I won't purchase the camera from him. I guess I'm curious if there is something I should be aware of. Is it possible that he is selling refurbished cameras?

I know you're not into the "Avoid Being Scammed" guides. But, is there anything I should be aware of that would account for the wide price variations beyond simple bidding wars?

Thanks!

Hi, CameraJim -- I've just read and enjoyed your guides.
Any of your 3 listed topics should be good.
Along with using light tents, I'd like to know something about making them, maybe in different sizes & shapes for photographing different kinds of things, and to accomodate different camera angles.
On tripods, I'd like to know what I need to get or make, so I can shoot vertically downward (say for coins, but also larger things) without the legs of my tripod ending up in the picture.

I sell motor coaches and do my own photography. I do a bit of decor, flowers, place settings at the table, etc, but have difficulty getting good photo's in close places such as, toilets, closets, etc. Because I try, my results is better than most I see, but am convinced, I have lots of room for improvement.
Check Motor Coach interior shots and you'll see what I mean.
Thanks
