No I am not talking about your feet or some strange behavior. I talking about the constant chewing and and/or licking your dog does to his feet. For some reason this behavior becomes even more intense after midnight as the dog lays at the foot of your bed licking and chewing as you try to sleep. You use your foot to nudge your dog to put stop the behavior and it stops. Thank goodness now you can go to sleep. Just as you are falling to sleep your dog is chewing and licking at his feet again. It is enough to drive a person crazy.

If you are shaking your head and asking what am I talking about you have been lucky not to experience a common problem in small breed dogs. Unfortunately while not a small dog this is also fairly common in Labs. These dogs do not have a compulsive behavior which requires a shrink. They have a problem fairly common problem in different form from many of us ----- allergies. As the dog walks around outside in the grass pollens and other small particles are trapped on the skin between the toes. This is even more severe if the grass is wet from dew or watering. The skin between the toes is sensitive and begins to react. The dogs begins to lick and bite creating further irritation,often create bacterial and yeast infections in these areas This becomes a vicious cycle.

There a a number of medications that can be use to treat these dogs. Some of them are injections and oral products that can have unpleasant side affects. However a few simple things that can be done at home may reduce these problems. One of the best is dogie footwear. Yes, you can order footwear for your dog. While most folks are not to keen on putting footwear on their dog those who use this method are very happy with it.

Another method acceptable to most people is cleaning between the toes when the dog comes in from outside. One of my favorite products for cleaning between the toes is Malaseb pledgets. They come as 60 individual pads. Malaseb pledgets are designed with multi functional surfactants (softening agents) and are specially designed for topical application, allowing gentle cleansing as well as wide ranged anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity. The process is simple----Wipe affected area thoroughly with the pledget. Distract animal for several minutes following treatment to prevent licking. Each pledget should be used once and discarded.

Many of us look forward to being outdoors as summer arrive. We are excited to go fishing,hiking,camping or just playing in the water. And if you are like me, my dog is right beside me in all these activities. However these activities combine with the warmth and the anatomy of the dog's ear set the stage for ear problems for many of our dogs. You many notice an increase in smell, heavy black wax or a wet discharge. Most of these ear problems are bacterial, yeast or a combination. The dark, hot environment of the ear is a great place for these organisms to grow.

One of my favorite products to treat these ears with is Zymox Otic either with or without 1% Hydrocortisone. Zymox is used in both dogs and cats for the treatment of ear problems caused by bacterial, viral and yeast infections.

Treatment Recommendations

Zymox Otic is used once a day for 7 days to treat new infections and once a day for 14 days to treat long standing infections. Zymox Otic should not be used in conjunction with other topical ear medications or cleaners except Zymox Ear Cleanser.

Zymox Otic is designed to deodorize and gently clean,dry and acidify the ear canal. Zymox Otic is applied liberally into the ear canal as you massage the base of the ear. Clean the excess with a cotton ball. In excessively dirty ears apply 2 to 3 times a day for several days. Do not use Q-tips in the ear.

Kidney failure is a common problem in older cats and dogs. As your pet's kidneys begin to fail, the blood urea nitrogen or BUN, (waste products produced by the body) begin to raise. The body tries to eliminate some of these waste products by dumping it into the digestive system. Soon this system becomes saturated and the BUN continues to rise. The raise in BUN causes the kidneys to try to work harder causing further damage. Soon a vicious cycle is established resulting eventually in total renal failure and death.

Traditionally, it has been difficult to bring the BUN back to normal and maintain kidney function. Azodyl has provided a new tool for resolving the kidney failure.    Two clinical trials have been completed to test the OcluVet formulation in patients with lens opacities ranging from lenticular sclerosis to hypermature cataract. In a multi-veterinary hospital clinical study of cataract and lenticular sclerosis conditions in several animal species, 83% showed a measurable reduction in opacity and/or improved vision. Administration of one drop per eye three times per day was given for 8 weeks followed by a one drop per day administration for maintenance.
