Cattyvet Pet Health News

To Be Pilled or Not

And the battle has begun. Both sides have their battle plans.Your task is simple, give your dog his medication to treat his current health problem. Maybe if you sneak up on your dog while he is sleeping, quickly shoving the pill down his throat you will accomplish your goal, hopefully without getting bit. One, two, three and you are off to the races. Your dog is up looking at you like what happen but seems to have swallowed the pill. Now time for your victory dance. No wait. OH No, he just gagged out the pill.

Of course, you have a plan B. You will hide the pill in canned dog food, hot dog, cheese, peanut butter or something you just know he will eat. Yes he is excited at the opporrunity to have a treat.Wow,he nearly takes your finger off to grab the treat  Now you can do a victory dance. OH No, he ate the treat from the around the pill and out came the pill.

And cats can be even more fun.

While not every dog or cat is this difficult to give medication to, it is amazing how many are. Pills Pockets have taken the hassle out of medicating these pets.

Pill guns are helpful in some animals. ** Important point about pill guns to recognize. While you can get the medication for enough back in the throat that the pet does not gag it up, often these pills are not swallowed; but, sit in back of throat dissolving, not being properly absorbed and in some cases causing local irritation. Even if the animal appears to swallow you can not be sure the medication went down. If you are dry pilling by any method including pill gun you should follow up with a syringe or eyedropper of water to ensure the medication is washed into the stomach. :) Owen
