Japanese/Chinese fruit question Help

I'm looking for a Japanese and/or Chinese fruit.  I've googled and haven't been successfull because I don't know the name of it, and I wasn't able to come up with even a picture.

They are the size of golf balls but have a coconut like brown shell.  Brown spike like things all over it.  You crack it open and the luscious fruit is inside.  Looks like a giant grape, but white in color.  Tastes like a pear.  I know they are in season.

I was in London when I visited China town, and that was the only place I could find them.  I know they are here in the states.  We dont have any chinese or Japanese markets anywhere near me.  But they have to be in the china town's somewhere here in the US.

Can anyone help?  And how can I order them?

they may be Liche or lichie I'm not sure of the English spelling.

They aren't either Japanese or Chinese, They grow most everywhere. It's just that maybe they use them more.

I have a tree at my FIL's and here their season has finished.
