Six Reasons NOT To Buy The 3G iPhone

1. The 3G radio. Yes, I am going to complain about the 3G radio. Apple stuck a UMTS/HSDPA 3G radio in the iPhone. Kudos to Apple for at least making it a tri-band radio, meaning you’ll be able to roam between North America, South America, Australia, Europe and many other regions of the world and still have access to 3G. But Apple could have done better. How? What about including a radio that can handle AT&T’s HSPA network, meaning faster uploads for all those pictures and emails? What about supporting faster versions of HSDPA. Right now, the iPhone’s 3G radio supports the middle HSDPA speed, which is about 3.6Mbps for downloads in optimal conditions. Other 3G phones available on the market support 7.2Mbps downloads. The 3G iPhone may in fact have a 3G radio in it, but it is not quite as zippy as others. Apple could have put the best chip in there. And it should go without saying, but I am going to say it anyway: If you don’t live in an area blanketed by AT&T’s 3G network, upgrading to 3G won’t do you any good.

2. Lack of other upgrades. Still no stereo Bluetooth, still no MMS, still no video recording, still no character counter in the SMS app, still no IM capability, still no cut-and-paste, etc. Many of these features may be offered via third-party apps in the future, but that is not known for certain.

3. Still no keyboard. The iPhone’s software keyboard has documented issues. It’s simply harder to use than Apple says it is. I’ve owned an iPhone for a year and still have trouble with it. So do many others.

4. The Price. Yes, the price. I know the device costs $200 less than it did yesterday morning, but that’s not taking into consideration the additional $240 you’ll be paying for that data contract over two years. The total cost to own the device for two years just went up by $40. If price was the only thing keeping you away from the original iPhone, just know that it ain’t cheaper at all. Of course, you can’t forget the new rules. 3G iPhones need to be purchased and activated in AT&T (NYSE: T) or Apple stores. No unlocking, two year-contracts mandatory

5. The Camera. Apple made no improvements to the camera at all, and not even to the camera’s software. Many of the world’s top converged devices have cameras that range between 3 and 5 megapixels. The iPhone’s 2-megapixel shooter is really a bare bones camera for such an advanced device. There’s also no flash and no vanity mirror. On top of that, the software controlling the iPhone’s camera includes no ability to make any adjustments to the shooting process or the camera’s settings. You can’t dial down the resolution, the quality, adjust white balance, or perform any other changes that even “free” phones can make. That’s just poor. Perhaps Apple is relying on third-party app developers to create better camera software. Personally, I’d rather have Apple-developed camera software, and Apple didn’t deliver.

6. Why buy the new iphone 3G when there are an amazing amount of freebie sites just giving them away. the links to the right on the blog roll have some of the best sites for your free iphone 2 3G, these are all affiliate websites who gather customers for big companies such as Lovefim Blockbusters Gala Bingo etc. when they send someone to say Lovefilm and that person signs up for the free trial and completes the free trial with no obligation to stay with Lovefilm then the affliate website is paid affiliate money, this money is used to buy your free gift. its just a new way for companies to get people to join them but everyone wins you get the free gift of your choice the affiliate website earns money and the big companies get more people to join them. its a win win win situation.

excited over likely launch of 3G iPhone 2 tomorrow?

I can’t wait to get my hands on the new iPhone 2, which supposedly will have additional features and better looks,” he added.

The buzz over the new version being showcased in San Francisco was further fuelled by a memo to employees in May sent by AT&T, iPhones’s sole provider in the US.

“No additional vacation will be approved between June 15 - August 12,” said the company, which had issued a similar notice last year before the phone’s launch.

When the original iPhone from the apple stable - a crossover between an iPod and a smart-phone - hit the market last year, lack of 3G capabilities and a built-in global positioning system (GPS) receiver were seen as few of the disadvantages.

Nevertheless, the flaws did not seem to deter the buyers, according to a recent study by the technology think-tank Gartner. Apple rose to number three position in the worldwide smart-phone category in terms of market share, selling more than 1.7 million handsets in just about nine months.

The serpentine lines outside Apple and AT&T stores made headlines in India, despite the fact that apple at that time had not disclosed any plans of marketing their new product in the country.

The phone was named the Time magazine’s invention of the year. And despite not being officially available in the country, the phone was voted as the gadget of the year by most tech shows in India.

Gaffar market in Karol Bagh, the go-to place in the city if you want the shiny chrome plated phone, does not seem to know about by the new development. Santosh Singh, who deals specifically with the iPhone, said he had no idea if a new version of the iPhone was being launched.

“If that happens, it will be good for the business as the new phone will take sometime to seep in the Indian market and when the supply is less the profits are always high,” he said.

It is not all rumours that make the whole hype surrounding the 3G iPhone 2 believable given the secretive and surprising marketing strategies of Apple.

During a meeting in California in November 2007, AT&T chief executive Randall Stephenson (in what has been regarded as a slip-up) told reporters that his company was working with Apple for the 3G version of iPhone.

Apple fan websites and iPhone forums all across the web are on fire. Not only can one find the “leaked pictures” but also copies of apple’s patent application for the phone to the US Patent Office on these websites.

And what can one expect of the new phone? The list is endless but 3G and a GPS are more or less confirmed. Apple might also include flash player in its Safari browser and the phone would have window’s media format.

Avid blogger Zibri (real name not disclosed), who has founded the popular blog ziphone.org and also creator of ziphone - an unlocking utility software for the phone - says the launch of the next iPhone version will be sooner than expected.

“We’re near the event everyone is expecting. It seems Apple at last has included an embedded GPS. It features a category 8 HSDPA connection (3G) for a top speed of 7.2 MB/s. The main iPhone CPU will remain unchanged

iphone 2 to be pay-as-you go on 02

There are many more rumours such as O2 offering the iPhone 3G version for free to anyone that signs up for the most expensive tariff which is £75 a month and that existing iPhone customers will get the opportunity to upgrade for free if they sign up to another 18 month contract.

3G iPhone 2 to cost £100

Reports are suggesting the 3G iPhone 2 will go on sale in the UK for around the £100 mark.

Apple is apparently adjusting its strategy to boost sales, new deals with operators have revealed that the company is changing its fixed price, exclusive partner business plan in order to hits its 10 million iPhone sales target for this year.

Steve Jobs is expected to unveil the second-gen, 3G iPhone 2 at the company’s WWDC08 developer event in the States next week.

The Times quotes “a source close to the deal” stating that the new model is expected to be on shop shelves by July, very shortly after the launch in America.

UBS analysts think the iPhone 2 will be available in Europe for as little as 99 euros, and suggest O2 could susidise the cost of the phone 2, meaning the price to the consumer dropping to £100.

Ben Wood, a CCS Insight analyst, said: “They are also looking for more flexibility on how the operators can price the iPhone 2, although I am not convinced that they will let them have open season on the price, as they have a lucrative iPod market to protect”.

Remember you will still require a 18mth contract, why not grab a free iphone 2 then unlock it? hundreds of people are now taking this route to avoid the high contract costs. iphone unlocking news will appear shortly after the iphone 2 is released and we will bring the latest news as it arrives.
