Freedom!

Loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke . . . then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; and your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

Isaiah 58:6,8

Freedom from sin; freedom from unforgiveness; freedom from injustice.  There are many things that hold us in spiritual bondage, things that do not allow us to grow, but rather to stagnate in one place, perpetually running in circle after vicious circle.  It is up to us to cast off those chains and cords by accepting what Christ has for us by faith, and make a decision for Him, each and every day.  By this, we are free, and free indeed.  Once we realize our freedom in Christ, we will realize what life is really all about.  We realize that light, healing and righteousness that He has placed in us and that we are ultimately responsible to our gifts share with others through random and not-so-random acts of kindness.  We cannot be saved by deeds of service without faith in Christ, but our faith lacks sincerity if it doesn't reach out to others.

God Bless you,

Actually, Isaiah was talking to the Jews of his time about real, literal chains and real, literal injustices. He was talking about social justice and action -- what today is called "liberation theology." I hate it when Christians "spiritualize" away the activism in the prophets... and you don't need Jesus, either. I have the same light as a Jew.

Actually, Isaiah was talking about fasting, in fact, the entire chapter is devoted to the subject. And fasting can be beneficial spiritually and physically, but at its best fasting helps only the person doing it. God says he wants our service to go beyond our own personal growth to acts of kindness, charity, justice, and generosity (activism, as you say). True fasting is more than what we don't eat; it is pleasing God by applying his Word to our society.
