Archive - August 2007 LIMING AT THE LIM STOREPosted Aug-21-07 11:14:01 PDT Updated Aug-21-07 11:17:27 PDT New York’s trendy SoHo shopping district continues to attract the best fashion names as retailers. My new fave designer, Phillip Lim, now has a two-level boutique there -115 Mercer Street - selling his men’s and women’s lines - 3.1Phillip Lim. Lim has a sensibility that marries Americana (very Claire McCardell) with European couture touches. Hence past runaway hits like the whimsical white T-shirt appliquéd with flowers. What really hits you in this new store are the prices. I’m not suggesting they are cheap – for most of us a $500 plus dress is a rip, but they are much lower than the normal designer duds exuding creativity. Yet in Lim’s clothes, you’ll never look like you escaped from a costume party. Several stars from the fall runway are now ready for you to just slap that credit card on the counter. A red and black buffalo check jacket – to die for. Must haves: Long navy cardigan with gold buttons, black cocktail dresses, high waist belted day dresses, a small but good selection of handbags and some choice pieces of jewelry. And absolutely anything gray – for men or for women works. BLING IS SOOO LAST WEEK! Finally, I think everyone just might be tired of the bling bling phenomenon. Everything comes full circle… and gold seems to have come right back around again. Instead of diamond studs, gold hoops are now the default earring for any outfit. All the celebs are wearing them. Well, the celebs featured in the weekly mags, anyway. Beyonce and JLo were captured in the pages of Life & Style magazine wearing the exact same pair of $5,000 gold Ofira. Big gold bangles and/or as many different lengths of gold necklaces as you can fit around your neck are important accessories for fall. Hmmm...L.L Cool J would have probably have been ‘The MAN’ right now huh?!?! Oh! And let’s not forget a ring which MUST look like it weighs your whole arm down. Gold is still a HOT shade for a party dress or a metallic bag and you’ll still see gold along with silver popping up in shoes and handbags. Back in BlackPosted Aug-07-07 08:36:14 PDT I thought summer would mean - like it always does - vacations, music festivals, outdoor movie series, BBQs, Starbucks iced lattes, Martha’s Vineyard, regular pedicure visits, and a closet filled with brights and whites….right???? Wrong! It’s been creeping up on me, but this summer leaves no doubt that black is back. Sure, not everyone is happy about it. Myself included. However, full black seems to be the uniform for any occasion this summer….a wedding, dinner al fresco, or a Sunday concert at the beach. Throw on some black skinny jeans, a black tank top, and…never leave home without them…a pair of black Ray Bans and you’re the “it” girl straight from the pages of InStyle! Of course, you can always have your black in a summer dress too. In an image change, hit singer Rihanna, has switched to all black in videos for her two new singles, “Shut Up and Drive” and “Don’t Stop the Music”. She sported her new look on a recent appearance on BET’s 106 & Park. Dressed in a tank, skinny jeans, and retro oxford heels, Rihanna proved that she is not just another bubble gum pop girl, but a fashionista at heart. And while Amy Winehouse doesn’t always wear it, she has declared it with the title of her album “Back to Black”. |
