Most Recent Posts Old-Fashioned FunPosted Nov-14-06 12:54:50 PST Anyone who has attended a local festival in the cool fall weather can relate to "Old-Fashioned Fun"! Our community celebrated Pioneer Days recently, and many turned out for this lakeside yearly event. The weather was, by Northern standards, warm, but since I am "living nicely" in Florida, it felt crisp with the freshness of Fall. Our local matriarch had donned her typical over the top patriotic regalia (huge hat and all) and the local high school band's colorful "Highlander" Scottish uniforms added more autumn colors than our evergreen trees did! There were demonstrations of how things were done in the old days, including blacksmithing, broom making, candlestick making and weaving. Something children should see more of in our high tech world of gadgetry and instant gratification! Not that I don't love the best of both worlds, but we should not forget our history... it fosters more appreciation and value for what we have now! If you haven't had food cooked on the grill by one of your local organizations, or bought a cold drink from an eager youth raising money lately, you're missing out on how much better it tastes than the drive-thru fast food we doom ourselves to daily. These festivals are also an opportunity to support the artisans and craftsman that, unfortunately, struggle to survive in our mass-produced "Wally World" and have few venues to sell their wares. Thanks to EBay and the internet, the savvy dealer has been able to tap into a fantastic marketplace for entreprenuers. Well, enough reminiscing for now, but I am known for my chattiness, and look forward to sharing the good life in Florida with anyone who cares to share! |
