| The Definition of Elitism.Posted Apr-23-08 21:19:16 PDT I Watched the Colbert Report from yesterday and Colbert was arguing with Susan Jacoby about elitism, it was funny that they argued over the meaning of being an elitist. In the Oxford dictionary the definition of elitism is "advocacy of or reliance on leadership or dominance by a select group". In otherwords elitism means a strong believe of a ruling class and in a more simple term people that think their better then everybody else. With my experiences of the world I know one thing that's very hard to lie about and that thing is there's no such thing as a perfect human being hell I'm not perfect, one time I accidentally made out with my old girlfriend's twin sister by mistake(the room was dark) then yet sometimes mistakes arn't so bad, huba huba. So in reality the very thing that makes a elitist is this "they believe they are better then everybody else" and you don't have to be smart, strong or powerful to believe that, some the people that work or used to work at my local "Subway" believe their better then everybody else(talk about clerks!). with my self studies of Psychology people with that attitude usually lack social skill and that is a very important skill to have to survive and fuction in society. Yet people with that attitude can end up poisoning society with foolish ideas like what happened with the witch hunt in early Amarican history, the Nazi movement in Germany and what really fules wars other then the lack of forfilling basic needs. Another reason for this is maybe they are suffering from a Axis II menal illness or "Personality Disorder" like ani-social or scizotypical. Yet that side of the mental illness isn't very well reasearched(the psychologists mainly study the Axis I or III disorders) for the fact that these disorders don't affact the person's other fuctions other then social skill yet I only read a 1991 book on psychopathology so the science might be different these days. So the bottom line is that the people who think they are better then you are really just crazy or jerks, even those 1% people are not superior(plenty of those people won't even give their wealth to their own kids when they die the selfish bastards it's not like they're going to "buy" a new car and place in the afterlife) sometimes I think the money owns "them" not it so I feel more sorry for them then envy, Jesus Christ was once offered all the wealth and power on Earth but he turned all that down why, because money doen't buy happyness nor does Elitism! Life is a Journey not a destination and elitism just sets destinations, thank you for reading!
