DVD Total Recall

Winter 2007

Welcome to this edition of Dewing DVDs newsletter!  This issue I will focus on DVDs that have been recalled and how you can replace them.  This comes on the heels of the Superman movie releases last November 28th.

The Superman III: Deluxe Edition DVD is missing bonus content from the Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition 14 DVD Box Set.  Also, the first disc of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition does not include the Dolby Digital 2.0 sound mix.  Warner Bros. acknowledged these omissions and is offering replacement discs by calling 800-553-6937

20th Century Fox will also provide replacements for their Blu-Ray editions of Speed, starring Keanu Reeves, as some of these discs will not play on Samsung Blu-Ray players.  Consumers can contact the studio directly at 888-223-2369.

Many DVDs have been recalled in the past.  The two that quickly come to mind are Little Shop of Horrors and Ed Wood.

The first issue of Little Shop of Horrors was earliest that we can remember.  This title, released in 1998, was recalled due to an objection to the supplemental material, which included the release of the original ending.  Warner Bros. recalled the title and released a second edition without any supplemental material.  Prices for the original DVD have been upwards of $150.

Ed Wood saw a second shelf life as Buena Vista's release of the title was recalled shortly after shipping several thousand titles for the original February 3, 2004 release.  Many collectors were able to snap up copies of this title before the recall and, for a short time, fetched upwards of $60.  Speculation ran rampant that it was Martin Landau's character Bela Lugosi who uttered the line, "those bastards at Universal," that prompted the recall.  But many believed that it was an unsecured Bill Murray "Que Sera Sera" number that was included as an outtake. In the end, the same edition was eventually released and the title sold for closer to its retail price.

Feel free to email abe@dewingdvds.com with additional recalled DVDs or feel free to post ones that you remember.

To the DVD fan in all of us,
Abe
