Doctor Who Enemy Information – The Dalek (“dah-leck”)

The Dalek’s are a fictional extra-terrestrial race which frequently appear in the British Science fiction television series “Doctor Who” (The longest running sci-fi series in the World).

These somewhat unusual “squid-like” creatures are integrated with a tank-like mechanical casing made of “dalekanium” The resulting creatures are a race hell-bent on destruction of all living creatures non-Dalek, Universal domination and even more frighteningly they have in recent episodes began dabbling with integration with other species.

Dalek’s have had all emotions except hate removed; they therefore kill and destroy without any compassion or remorse. They are collectively the greatest alien adversaries of a Time Lord known as “The Doctor”, their most famous catchphrase is “EX-TER-MI-NATE, with each syllable being individually screeched in a frantic electronic voice.

Created by the writer Terry Nation and the BBC designer Raymond Cusick the Dalek’s were instroduced in the December of 1963 in the second Doctor Who serial. They became an absolute hit with the viewing public, appearing in two movies in the 1960’s and many other episodes of Dr WHO, the Dalek’s seemed to have the whole nation hiding behind their Sofas!

The word DALEK has even been entered into the Oxford English Dictionary as well as many other major dictionaries. It is also a trademark, first registered by the BBC in 1964 to protect its lucrative range of Dalek Merchandise.

The Daleks have even appeared on the British Postal Stamp
