Drlspears Blog on Massage oils

* What is the best oil for massage products?

Grapeseed I like for infant massage oils. This is the the oil the smallest number of people are sensitive to.

Infant products you want to have plain...less is more.

For massage oils...

If you work with almond oil it has a very short shelf life. Refrigerate all oils after opening..and store in the smallest container possible. You can prick vitamin e capsules and add..but soybean oil (i.e. most cheap vegetable oil -- soybean oil) is loaded with vitamin E. So you can mix that in too.

Generally products are a blend of oils to get most from each oils special properties. You can buy massgae oil bases, then add your own essential oils.

Canola oil has a long shelf life, as does olive.

I usually avoid nut oils in products due to sensitivity..but most cheap nut oils are skin safe (processing) ..it is the high-falutin special processed nut oils that cause problems.

Shelf life is a only a few months for  most oils (after opening) and usually not longer than a year.

I'm not expert..just based on research.

Do your own research, due diligence. There are preservatives. This is not exhuastive. It is not a substitute for advice.

Basic massage oil recipe:

* 6 teaspoons carrier oil (like canola, almond, etc, or blend or massage oil base).

* 8 drops essential oil

(basically want to maintain teaspoon or tablespoon carrier to drop of essential oil ratio).

Cinnamon oil can be skin sensitive (not exhaustive list). Pregnant women have sensitivity. All oils should be skin tested in small amounts. Search internet /library for patch test. You will need to go to the library and research. Avoid getting essential oils in eyes..or rubbing eyes after handling oils. I NEVER USE THE ESSENTIAL OILSA ON EYE PILLOWS BECAUSE OF THE EYE SENSITIVITY. Some essentials oils make you photosensitive light sensitive for a while.

Blend ingredients well.

Warm up oil before doing any massage.

I use special carrier oils that are preserved and more solid..thus they are heated in microwave ten to fifteen seconds before use. Or you can use a candle warmer and cup of hot water and put the oil inside. Use a baby bottle warmer..maybe.
