Royal Mail Industrial Action - PLEASE READ

Royal Mail are currently on strike/industrial action. Unlike previous action this seems to have been more carefully planned to cause the maximum possible disruption to mail than before. Different departments of Royal Mail are striking on different days and/or in different areas also. The effect of this is cumulative and is causing major backlogs of post across the United Kingdom. In particular the people most affected are bulk mailers with contract accounts with Royal Mail such as ourselves and other mail order outlets.

The backlogged mail is estimated at around 8 million items and growing at 1 million a day. Consequently mail is taking a lot longer to get through to people and to get out of the country, and also via Heathrow, which is where 90% of international mail leaves this country. Particularly hard hit areas are Wolverhampton, London, Southampton, Milton Keynes, Uxbridge, Hull and Slough. Wolverhampton alone has a backlog of over 1 million items, which is understandable when you appreciate that Staffordshire is home to a very large quantity of mail order companies and fulfillment houses.

In theory the backlogged mail should be getting processed in an "oldest first" rota, but in reality we have been told this is not happening, and when mail is being sorted the private postings (from postboxes and Post Offices) are getting done first simply because there's "less of it" and being collected daily from the boxes etc it tends to be smaller sacks, eg the "easy option".

Some areas are particularly badly affected also as post is not being collected from some businesses AT ALL, this is for example affecting us on the Staffordshire Moorlands quite badly. However, the items leaving us from Sussex via Redhill in Surrey do not seem to be getting such serious delays. This is why some of our items will arrive a lot quicker than others, some are sent from Stoke On Trent, some from Horsham, stock is kept in 2 different places.

You will need to allow a reasonable amount of time for deliveries to arrive during this difficult time, and accept our apologies for Royal Mail's actions which are beyond our control.

Royal Mail's website on the action.

Steve and The Retrowarez.com team....

PS this affects ALL our eBay listings, not just DrSteveW, but the miscellaneous Retrowarez IDs also. Perfume/After Shave is unaffected AT PRESENT as this is despatched from Horsham.

PPS Anyone with any more info please add to this blog.

I think people aren't quite realising the magnitude of the problem too. They think that because a strike was on a certain day, say a Friday, that only items posted around that time will be affected. The reality is that the postal workers are having to do (at least) twice as much work just to catch up on the huge backlog.
My postman today looked really hassled and stressed, and I'm sure that's the case with many others as they try to catch up.
I would join Steve in asking all eBay users (and other mail order sites) to please be patient, as some sellers are receiving unfair feedback for slow delivery, a situation which is totally out of control.

Hi all!

Ronhero, maybe it is a good idea to let your buyers know what it going on with the post? It may be talking the obvious, but not everyone watches or reads the news these days - I know loads of people who have absolutely no interest in the media. I have just sold a not inexpensive item to a guy in Ukraine and felt quite uncomfortable telling him about the industrial action. I also felt that he didn't believe me, so then I copied and pasted the links, not only to Royal Mail's website, but also to our local paper. I just got an email from him today asking me NOT to post his item until Monday! It really pays to keep your buyers informed on what is going on, good AND bad and be truthful. We have cocked up on numerous occasions (mostly believing that the other had sorted things out), yet we have been honest about our mistakes and have never received bad feedback as a result.

Thanks for this useful information Steve and team. The one thing that stands out to us is the non-uniform nature of this strike action is causing many of our customer's confusion. As the action is occurring in different departments in different areas it is very difficult to predict delays and some post is getting through whilst other post is not. Some departure dates seem to be impacted more severely than others too. For instance, some parcels sent out from our store 1st class on 26th and 27th July would appear to still be caught up in strike whilst some items sent later have arrived. We know that some area's are still very much impacted by flood backlogs too. Our customer's have been very understanding regarding the situation with Royal Mail.

Yes Janet, the 25th to the 27th seems to be the dates most affected, I'm hearing this all round. What makes it really suck though is SOME stuff arrives quickly. I ordered an in charger for my new mobile Thursday afternoon (lateish IIRC) and the blasted thing came this morning. Way to go Royal Mail, confuse the hell out of everybody.

Very useful information, thanks. It certainly sounds like not many of the general public know how bad the industrial action is effecting deliveries, some people seem totally unaware there is a strike at all. We have added a note to all our listings on eBay warning buyers of possible delays, and added the same to all emails. As this is effecting everyone buying and selling on eBay could eBay themselves not add a note to there item won email asking buyers to be patient during the Royal Mails industrial action, just a thought.

kind Regards,
Sean

Well Sean eBay have made some announcements on the site, but yes I do think it could be a little more "obvious" ;-) I think we're faced with the usual old issue here of buyers simply not reading anything that's sent to them.
