NO DRAMA AND NO ABUSE TOLERATED HERE -- I GET ENOUGH AT HOME

In a delimma

As everyone knows my store at this point sells only new, hand made and one-of-a kind jewelry.

My question is this:  Would it hurt my image if I were to list other things in a category labeled say 'treasures' or 'other items'.  I have tons of sewing and craft supplies I no longer use, lots of books for teaching and simply tons of thinigs that have built up over the years that I'd love to sell.

Give your opinion.

hi. do you know that when you click on your items for sale, it says shipping is $50.00? now THAT can hurt your image :)

at the top - not for a single item

it says" pay a maximum of $50.00 for eligible items"

i think it is in combined shipping settings

That's right, if you look at my item listings with 'Not specified' in the to USA column you will see the new Greek Govt. Postage breakdown. I honor the older listings at $6 or $7 which by the way is also an ebay mistake as I was never in the US to have a US domestic S&H but I still try and honor it.

A maximum of $50 is not hard to reach if you buy several items and you add the postage up starting with the heaviest item as your base.

Also, I think that you need to read the details. I think I've broken it down fairly clearly.

ok, sorry to have bothered you. all i saw was earrings, and i couldn't see how it would cost $50.00 to ship even 100 pairs. they are pretty - good luck

'not specified' doesn't look good - especially as you are perfectly willing to tell people what the shipping is... you can't add the new rates? They're gonna be getting rid of 'unspecified' as an option soon I understand, so if its a glitch it wouldn't hurt to start working on it now.

No, I don't think there's any reason not to sell whatever along with your jewelry.

I try to give everyone the lowest shipping I can. Remember as well, that you are paying in US$ and I am paying in euros which also may make things seem out of skew.
I have never yet been able to send out a package that requires a signature upon receipt, and all mine go out that way, for less than 5.98 euros and that is for one light pair of earrings. If you do the math with today's exchange rates you'll see that that come to about $9.45 for each package. (today's rate is $1.58 = 1 euro). The stamps do not tell the whole story behind the postage costs.

So, I don't think my postage is too, high. Nor is $2 for handling (which I rarely remember to charge, anyway) If you have ordered any of my things, you know how well they are packaged.

Do the math and read carefully before condemning.

I have yet to come out even on S&H and until now have never said a word.

The rates are specified in great detail within each listing! I opted for this method when eBay assumed I was a domestic US seller and posted all the postage as domestic US and not international

? I don't think he/she isn't "condemning" you, I think they thought you may have had your fields set incorrectly and were trying to be helpful. I wasn't either by the bye - I was suggesting where you had "$6" written, you write $12 'cause then it will come up with $12 in the field insteada "unspecified" and eBay telling folk here "unspecified" is Bad and to be Careful.

I'm not mad or accusing, it's just that I have yet to make a profit on anything I've sold and when I saw you post it hit a nerve. Sorry if I took it out on you sundance. I wasn't my intention. My intention was to clarify.

Sorry,

I mean, what seems to be the main problem?

Fees? I know another site that is all hand-made (a Lot of jewelry makers there, tho, very competitive) and international that is extremely Inexpensive. twenty cents (US) for listing with 3.5 percent of the sale as a final value fee, 5 free pictures, its all fixed price so there's no auction worries. Its called Etsy. You also get (no charge) your own little shop url so it would be yourshop.etsy.com - easier to promote.

Customers? That's harder - the US dollar is way down. I dunno how much better it is in Europe. Are you promoting your shop anywhere?

between, the cost to make the item, eBay fees, paypal fees and packaging and postage there has been nothing left. being new I didn't know that listing auctions was a bad way to go and all of what I sold through auctions went for either .99 or 1.99.
Then there are the taxes I have to pay, 28% on each items value of sale, including S&H.

And I've only been able to sell by offering radical discounts.

Most of the promo sites like Big Crumbs won't allow me to participate so I've kinda let that slide a bit as my time is kinda limited with a severely medically handicapped child to care for. (The reason I closed my brick and mortar store).

I tried icraft.ca but that was a waste of time and some virtual malls but the expenses outweighed the potential profits.

I'll get all down eventually.

Don't know why I'm so down and touchy today.

Could be that I don't see my 'little' one getting any better and it all caught up.

twenty-eight percent, that seems like a lot - they tax exports that high? You'd think they'd wanna encourage exporting.

Yeah, DON'T do 99 or 1.99 or the dreaded .01 -- those are fine once in a while if you have a BIG following who's gonna try to outbid each other on your items. I have a decent sized following and I sometimes end up selling stuff for $2.48 or 6.77 or something dumb like that 'cause it didn't appeal to a lot of different people..

I guess you have to raise your prices to accomodate all the expenses OR find a way to cut the expenses. I get a ton of free packaging - I have friends who work in offices, in America you have to pay to throw away trash so they're perfectly thrilled to give me all the bubble wrap and boxes I wanna pick up..

It's not an export tax it's luxury item sales tax. You'd be surprised at what are considered luxury items. Until 5 years ago dishwashers and air conditioners were. Clothes dryers still are. All form of jewelry (genuine stone or silver and gold) are luxury items.

? you'd pay the same tax on an item you exported to another country as on one you sold domestically? They don't differeniate?

I read about your daughter, I was checking out your me pages. How old is she?

I don't know anything about big crumbs. What about say something like facebook, or flickr (however you spell that)? I did well showing things at Deviantart - a lot of people would check out my auctions. MySpace - that one is good and their blog is indexed quickly - its ALSO the same format as this blog so you can copy and paste from one to the other. I imagine the blog is for promotion, but do you have it registered at any traffic exchanges or anything? A group of like minded artists/artisans sometimes promote each other - I belong to several for dollmakers.

no they don't differentiate on income it's all the same to them.

Zoe is now 19 and was never supposed to make it past 2 but these last 2 years have seen a rapid decline.

I sent my listings to facebook. Don't know about others.

I've gotta go cook lunch. I'll be back later, though.

Thanks for the input veruka and if you don't mind I'll bother you for more help later.

Go right ahead. I'm a mentor on the Etsy site (its a program they have to help new people set up their shops). I like to see fellow artists and artisans getting the recognition for their Craft that they deserve.

Check into some of those sites when you have time - they're all social networking sites you can join free where you could show you art (and link back to here, naturally ;-). I like the Ning network's "Indiepublic" too (indiepublic.com).

Enjoy your lunch.
