Canon DSLR XTi camera settings.

This is my first SLR camera I picked it because I thought it was rather easy to use. But the pictures I took at my granddaughters birthday came out dark. I used the flash that came with camera at 6-7 feet away which I thought the flash would be enough. Is there something I need to adjust to make my flash work better? I plan on purchasing a slave flash but what good is the flash on the camera that won't work at so close distances.
