I always gone on individual taste - that being mine
I dont follow any trend fashion etc...
Always follow what you like, not what frank down the road likes
Always say no when being pressured into buying something
And always ...and I do mean always live within your means...Dont fall into the debt spiral just because you think you have to keep up with all the current trends..Thats what the corporate people want you to do...so dont and annoy em.....!

Auctions are probably the best way to advance your collecting prowess, I dont mean the Ebay one although its a pretty good one to start on, I mean the provincial ones all across the country.
where you can buy pretty much anything at any price, I have had some excellent bargains at some auctions. For example 40 vanguard models for £35.00, I was the only bidder there, as Im guessing the rest of the audience at attendance hadnt a clue what they were. There are auctions every week in most towns and cities, the best way to find your local one is  your local papers, or indeed have a trawl on the net. I guarantee you will not be disapointed. Just dont get carried away!! and always factor in the auction house commision + vat before you go mad which your arm!
