So lately I've been conducting short interviews with various individuals, in a more informal setting, about the types of clothing styles they prefer. A lot of this market research has been aimed at those in the domestic market rather than an international one. Just recently I had the idea to expand that research to include the U.K. and their taste in popular clothing fashions and the revelation has been incredibly interesting. Big name American fashion trends in urban wear such as Sean John, Apple Bottoms, etc. is almost non-existant in the United Kingdom. I assumed that the export of American pop culture would have desseminated within the U.K. by now but not so. I found in my research that the British are geared more towards brands such as Lacoste and Diesel... almost overwhelmingly. While this may hold true for the U.S. market as well, it probably is no where near the level existing in the U.K. While there is a urban/hip-hop market in the U.K., it appears to be more of an underground culture as opposed to the U.S. where the hip-hop culture is basically modern pop-American culture. It is easier to gear towards an American customer base but given the economic situation between countries and the depreciation of the domestic currency against most foreign currencies, it is most appealing to attempt to enter the foreign market with cheaper American goods and taking advantage of a stronger Euro and Pound. I am still considering whether or not to go in that direction and attempt to sell Diesel and such in the U.K. market.
