The 2008 Oscars

Not really surprised wit hthe Best Picture winner. 'No Country' was a killer movie! And the Best Actor for Daniel Day Lewis was a clear shot. Day-Lewis is nigh untouchable whenever nominated. He's an acting tour-de-force.

Now - the Best Actress was MY upset. I thought that Cate Blanchett was the clear winner for her powerful performance as Queen Elizabeth in 'Golden Age'...guess I was wrong! Not only is she one of my favorite actresses, she was also a double nominee (best actress/supporting actress). Personally, I thought she did a heckuva a job playing a medieval queen AND playing Bob Dylan.

The Best Actress was won by a no-name french girl in a 'who-what?' French movie. (Marion Cotillard in "La Vie en Rose")

I'm sure she did a great job. But who in the US actually saw this movie? Or even heard of it? I don't know. Call me old-fashioned or prejudice - but shouldn't the 'Best Of' Oscars go to films that were released in the States? If this is not the case, then we should start a new category for 'Best Foreign Actor/Actress'. IMO. I'm sure there are others who feel this way.

I also think that The Transformers was severly snubbed in all of the editing and FX categories. Yes, it was a juvenile, smash-up, bang-up, cartoon-adapted movie; but it was STILL a techno-fx marvel, and it should have been treated as such! The biggest sore spot? It lost best sound editing and mixing to Bourne Ultimatum. That kinda ticked me off.

And the french poo-poo movie (La vie vah blah blah lol) won best makeup over NORBIT! Now, I didn't think much of Norbit the movie at all. It was whack. But we cannot deny that Eddie Murphy effectively played 4 roles flawlessly in full body maekup! The makeup job was amazing. And that lost to a chick movie? C'mon Academy members - show some love to the little guys.

All in all - this was a bland year for movies. No stand out moments (save 'No Country...'), no memorable scenes, no hip catch-phrases (Show me the money!), and the Oscar show reflected that. it was dry and crackly. Jon Stewart did all he could, but even that didn't help the lowest ratings in its history.

My Favorite Oscar Moment: GARY BUSEY harrassing Ryan Seacrest and Jennifer Garner on the red carpet! Sweeeet.

hey maybe Busey should host next year! Now THAT will get ratings! :-)

No Country For Old Men!

Wow! Finally gave into all the hype and went to see this last nite; I actually want to watch it again.

Gotta give it to the Cohen Brothers; they shurrrr can spin a good yarn! 'No Country' wastes no time jumping into a familiar story but taking all kinds of left turns! Regular guy stumbles into a scene of carnage, finds a hefty stash of cash ($2Mill!), and sets off a chain of events that doesn't let up until the final minutes of the movie!

One thing I truly appreciate about this movie is the editing. Unlike many modern films, this one doesn't feel the need to bounce around to cut-scene after cut-scene. It takes it time, lets you soak in each scene, enjoy the dialogue and scenary (great cinematography!) and unfolds as a very good story. And this being a Cohen movie, you're gar-un-teed a good time with some unforgettable characters and scenes that will leave a stain on your brain! This is an A+ movie thru and thru: the story, the pacing, the acting, the action, the drama, the tension, the plot....you wish all movies can be this good.

Love it or hate it, the ending is NOT a 'Hollywood' ending. Fans of the book will be besides themselves with satisfaction. Others may find themselve wanting. With that being said, the ending is appropo and sums it all up, title and all.

I absolutely loved it!

A+
