SHIPPING DISCOUNTS - how do they work???

Can anyone explain how I setup shipping discounts? I talked to Ebay online and the guy didnt seem to know himself! (go figure)

If my flat rate is $5, and I only want to charge $1 for every additional item....how do I set that up???  Anyone know?

Well - thats the confusing part. I'm there now...

So do i 'ADD' a fee per additional item?

Or do i 'SUBTRACT' a per additional item?

This is ConFuSing!

for example: My flat rate is $3. For evey other item sold, i only want to charge .25 cents more. (The books are lightweight, no need to overdo it.)

This is what Ebay says:

The Flat rule charges buyers the shipping price for the item with the highest shipping cost. You can then add (or subtract) an additional cost for each item purchased from you.
Add combined shipping discounts to your listing and eBay automatically calculates the shipping discount when the buyer checks out. You add combined shipping discounts to your listings in the Sell Your Item form.
