Celebrating What Truly Counts...The Perfect HolidayPosted Dec-18-07 12:06:07 PST
Celebrating What Truly Counts As the holidays arrive it is easy to become distracted by our desire for perfection. It might be the need to craft a festive environment, always be in an upbeat mood, or simply the desire to find just the right gifts for everyone in our lives. Even though these things can be positive, if we start putting too much pressure on ourselves during this season, we are much more apt to forget what truly is important—celebrating our lives with the people we care about. No matter what our feelings are, they are likely to be caused by an unrealistic sense of what the holidays should mean for us. Rather than thinking of this season as a time for finding the perfect gift or hosting the best party, we can get so much more out of the holidays if we create a personal inventory of the things that matter most to us. With each item we add to our list, we can then set the intention to use this season as a time to consciously rejoice in and express our appreciation for the blessings we have. The more we are able to let go of our traditional expectations for the holidays, the more open we will become to the bounteous spirit that lies within us. It is this spirit that will allow us to truly celebrate by sharing our greatest gifts: infinite love, peace, understanding, and joy, with those around us. Seeing Inside...Sight Versus VisionPosted Dec-17-07 16:07:23 PST
Seeing Inside Sight is the ability to see the physical world while vision is the gift of seeing beyond it. Sight enables us to take the physical world in so we can participate in it with knowledge. It brings us pleasure through our eyes, which perceive the colors and shapes of all the myriad expressions of nature and human beings. It helps us feel in control, allowing us to see what is coming toward us, which way we are going, and exactly where we are standing at a given moment. We are able to read signs and books, navigate the interiors of buildings with ease, sense and perceive how a person is feeling by the expressions that cross her face. It is in this state that vision becomes our mode of seeing. Vision comes from within and shows us how to navigate the realms of thought, feeling, and emotion. It enables us to see things that aren’t yet manifested in the world of form, and it also connects us to that part of ourselves that exists separately from the world of form. We call upon intuition and feel our way along a path that ultimately carries us beyond the realm we can see with our eyes and into the land of spirit. Fanning The Creative Flames...BoredomPosted Dec-16-07 18:07:57 PST
Fanning The Creative Flames The human mind thrives on novelty. What was once a source of pleasure can become tedious after a time. Though our lives are full, boredom lurks around every corner because we innately long for new experiences. Yet boredom by its very nature is passive. In this idle state of mind, we may feel frustrated at our inability to channel our mental energy into productive or engaging tasks. We may even attempt to lose ourselves in purposeless or self-destructive pursuits. While this can be a sign of depression, it can also be an invitation issued from your mind, asking you to challenge yourself. Boredom can become the motivation that drives you to learn, explore the exotic, experiment, and harness the boundless creative energy within. If, when in the grip of boredom, you have difficulty acknowledging the merits of any activities you might otherwise enjoy, generate your own inspiration. Before you find yourself beset by boredom, create a list of tasks you can consult when it feels like there is simply nothing to do. Referring to a list of topics you want to learn more about, projects you’ve yet to begin, or even pending chores can spark your creative energy and reawaken your zest for life. When you identify boredom as a signal that you need to test your boundaries, it can be the force that presses you to strive for opportunities you thought were beyond your reach and to indulge your desire for adventure. The (Evil) Genius Of Comment Spammers...Go Figure!Posted Dec-16-07 13:47:49 PST Updated Dec-16-07 13:48:51 PST Renegade Bloggers Played Google For The Fool...Then The Web Fought Back... The first arrivals drifted in innocuously, like the stray seagulls lurking during the early minutes of Hitchcock's The Birds. They were mostly phrased as salutations and praise, posted to the reader comments area of many popular blogs. Harmless notes, at face value, but they harbored a secret menace. The bloggers hit with these strange messages were victims of an insidious new species, now called "comment spam." But this was a strange sort of spam: Why would someone go to the trouble of spamming thousands of blog pages to deliver only glad tidings and hollow compliments? The answer, oddly enough, is that the spammers weren't trying to win the attention of the bloggers or their readerships. They were trying to win the attention of Google, like the high school bully beating up the class nerd to impress the homecoming queen. The nerd feels violated, but the truth is that it isn't really about him at all. The spammers were exploiting the fact that open comment forums on the Web let bloggers post HTML for free. And not just any Web pages: These are heavily valued by Google's PageRank algorithm, thanks to the chronic interlinking of the blogosphere. If you could convince one of those bloggers to link to your new site, you'd have instant credibility. And if you could persuade dozens of bloggers to place links, you'd be an overnight PageRank sensation. Because so much of the Web's traffic now funnels through Google's search engine, that higher ranking translates directly into more "customers" for the spammer. The (evil) genius of the comment spammers came when they realized that actually persuading the bloggers was unnecessary. All you have to do is post some benign text in the comment field and include a URL for your gambling site or Viagra emporium in discreet HTML. It doesn't hurt that some popular blog formats - notably Movable Type - have a standardized URL for posting comments, making it much easier to automate spam creation. The ultimate goal, of course, is to win the PageRank arms race against your competitors so the next time some hopeful soul types "penis enlargement" into Google, your site will arrive at the top of the list, having been validated by the sudden flood of links from the blogging community. Comment spam proliferated throughout the blog sites with amazing speed. One blogger had 120 posts spammed over four days. Thoughtful discussion spaces were besieged by meaningless posts, sometimes in broken English, sometimes with bizarre keywords inserted into otherwise prosaic comments in a sort of spammer Tourette's: "I greatly appreciate atkins diet the comments here." Skilled technicians who were angered by the incursions, the bloggers began to fight back. Within weeks of the comment spam explosion of late 2003, the blogosphere had strategies for stopping or neutralizing the invading hordes, most notably a plug-in created by blogger Jay Allen that blocks all comments that include text culled from an ever-expanding blacklist of spammers. In January, Movable Type's creators released a special update that contained fixes designed to thwart comment spam, including one that makes URLs posted in comment threads invisible to PageRank. In a way, the rise of comment spam confirms what many of us have felt for years: Google has become part of the Web's infrastructure, as central as HTTP or packet switching. The centrality has been a boon: PageRank has let us feel that information we seek is at our fingertips. But in a kind of dialectical progression, that very success has bred its own antithesis. Build a universe where linking determines relevance and where relevance leads to financial reward, and sooner or later people link in bad faith. Can PageRank learn to tell the difference? Let's Try This Again...Just Your Opinion, Please...Posted Dec-16-07 10:48:50 PST Updated Dec-16-07 12:07:22 PST The A**hole Blogging Syndrome... It's through my experiences, while working and playing on the Internet, that I have learned one thing (a few more of course): There's no better place to judge exactly just how much "class" someone has, than right here on the Internet....Here's why... The Internet is very freeing for people...We're all anonymous friends here (at least we "think" we are)...Most often, you don't know where someone works or specifically where they live, their level of education, even their sex, if they are gay, straight or bi, what they really look like, or how old they really are... So what does this all mean? It means we can all be as passive-aggressive as we want to be...We can all "pretend to be experts", in whatever fields of interest we choose to pursue online...Also, we can all be just as condescending as our evil black hearts, desire us to be...Without fear of being called out onto the red carpet as idiots... The most important key question of this rant, is simple: Why Do Some People Act Like A**holes Online? A lot of this can be explained by simple armchair psychology...People need attention and credibility...Some of the most controversial editorialist bloggers, some of the most hated Internet personalities, often turn out to be social outcasts or fairly boring individuals when you seek them out in real life...But, why? On the Internet, everyone is equal...Or they can at least "claim" to be...Those who regularly get their names out there, while writing a few blogs or commenting on certain subjects - if they keep it up - earn what they do not get in real life...They earn attention and credibility, regardless of attitude or quality.... The sad thing is, people don't earn a following on the Internet by being nice to others...People are condescending, rude, passive-aggressive, and outright mean at times...Because that's who we tend to respond to in the most quantitative manner... Sounds stupid doesn't it?... These trolls' efforts are further appeased...Due to the fact that the Internet population as a whole, can't authenticate their qualifications, to verify what they're saying... The Internet allows every person with a few hours of free time, and basic computer skills, to become a self-publisher...It's not always through a blog or website (though often it is)...Sometimes it's as simple as a person becoming active in a forum, participating in a particular community, commenting on news stories or writing letters to other publishers... People need recognition...Unfortunately, those people, that we most often recognize in our online world are truly "classless and ignorant, trolls"...Why are we drawn to such asinine behavior?... Why do we leave those "trolls" comments on their blogs...Knowing full well, that "they" will only "get off on it" and return a "trollish" like comment in reply...I have been guilty of these actions, as well as many other bloggers... It's quite pathetic isn't it?... What I have never understood in my time behind the computer screen is why - as a global online community - we ALLOW those truly hateful people to rise to the top...While ignoring our blogging neighbors who quietly listen, politely reply, and respect their blogging peers, in all that they may have to say... We...Yes, all of us are guilty of this, even the ones that say "Oh it wasn't me, I would never comment on that trolls blog"...Telling us to stay away from it...Blah, Blah, Blah...Then "they" (know-it-alls) go around to each and every blog condeming those bloggers, who they saw on that same trolls blog, that they were just on... Again, kind of pathetic isn't it?...What a joke! We...(yes, all of us)...Always seem to pass by the meaningful bloggers good insightful posts and go right to the "trolls" flammatory posts...Those good bloggers don't fuss or argue, they don't seek online fame, and they never say or do anything (at least that we can see) remotely uncouth...These bloggers do have class... Is this what our society has become?... Why do we allow the best of the bloggers among us, to always go unnoticed...While the trolling idiots and malcontents, slowly rise to the top with hoards of mindless lemmings behind them?...Pretty pathetic and seriously disappointing, isn't it...Hmmm... All that I can say is maybe the next Internet blogging generation, will do better than we have...In picking the "crème de la crème" as their idols...Maybe they can better recognize the outcasts for who they really are and stop feeding the "trolls" constant need for attention...Or maybe not...Time will tell... It's truely a sad world; when we allow ourselves to be represented publicly by some of those "trolls"...Who are only out there flaming and ridiculing others...And to think that we are letting those same "trolls", leave asinine comments on our blogs and lead our online communities...What are we thinking?... Do you honestly really think that the way a person behaves online, reflects their personality in real life?... That is a very important question that we all must ask ourselves...I personally believe the answer is "yes" it does...Remember that the comments that you leave, the articles you write, even role-playing and the games you participate in are all interesting to you... The way you act online, even if your out of character from who you are in real life, reflects your interests, your curiosities and your concerns...That is just something to think about next time you run across that inflammatory post on your favorite forum or blog... Season's Greetings & Happy Holidays!
