Firefighters originally had hoped to have the blaze contained Sunday, but gusting winds late Saturday night kept the fire burning out of control and creeping toward nearby homes, said Elisa Weaver of the Arcadia Fire Department. The mandatory evacuation order came shortly before 11 p.m.
The fire about broke out on a hot, dry Saturday afternoon in Southern California and about 10 miles northeast of Pasadena, Weaver said.
More than 100 hikers were escorted out of the forest by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, and Boy Scouts were evacuated from a camp, Weaver said. No injuries were reported.
Containment was not expected for two to three days, Weaver said.
"I think the biggest concern is this area ... has not burned in 10-plus years, so there's a lot of fuel up there for this fire," Weaver said.
More than 200 firefighters were aided by a dozen engines, three water tankers and three helicopters as they took on the blaze, Weaver said. She said more air support was expected later Sunday morning.
"They plan on hitting this thing at full force as soon as dawn hits," Weaver said.
Meanwhile, two shelters have been set up in the area for evacuees.
Flames outlined steep ridges about a mile above Sierra Madre, a community of about 11,000 at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains that is popular with artists.

I recently filed a NPB complaint on a buyer, who kept promising me they were going to pay me...I filed the complaint and waited for them to respond to the NPB complaint...They responded and said that they were going to pay...I said to myself "yeah right, I have already waited 12 days and I received no payments or emails from them!"...I then immediately closed it out, 24 hours after I opened it and then left them a NEGATIVE factual feedback... The BUYER clearly knew, that my auction stated that ALL PAYMENTS are DUE within 7 DAYS of auction close...I state it 2 times in my auction and also on the invoices they were sent...They never communicated with me about any issues, that they might be having...They also made false promises and they still did not pay me what they said they would...No Communication = No Sympathy...
I also received a RETALITORY negative feedback, for their wrong doing...And they also sent me nasty email, after they left me negative feedback...They say that I jumped the gun and should have waited longer for their payment?....That is why I deserved the negative feedback, that they left for me... They also said, "If you'd like to take the steps to remove the strike & negative feedback, I'm willing to do what's needed on my end"...No way...Once it's there...It STAYS...I do not take Negative feedbacks, back...Sorry!
I waited 12 calender days...That wasn't long enough?...Time is money and other people bid on that item...I received no payments or emails from them, except the ONE email where they promised to pay me, and their response to the NPB notice...WTF is that sh*t?
