Most Recent Posts What you need to know about your electronics and LightningPosted Oct-06-06 13:53:09 PDT Updated Oct-06-06 13:54:53 PDT I have worked in electronic repair for over 45 years and have seen many TV's ect. that were damaged beyond repair. Back before solid state when tubes were used almost everything could be repaired and it did not cost that much. Nowadays what people have in there homes is so easily damaged and in most cases cannot be repaired from even a nearby lightning strike. Time and time again i have people bring in lightning damaged electronics and ask i had a serge protector why did it not work? Lightning has what is called a fast rise time that is that from nothing to the high voltage happens so fast that the serge protector can not clamp it fast enough. Kind of like trying to grab a arrow as it goes by you not knowing it is coming. The only way to protect is to unplug and disconnect any wires coming from the telephone, satellite dish ect. that are connected to your equipment. Wires like telephone that are in the ground are most likely to be hit. What happens when your electric is hit it travels on the wires of your home looking for ground if your lets say satellite dish or cable is grounded it finds ground through the TV and satellite receiver. So what i am saying is what i have seen over 45 years of working on home electronics and the ONLY way to protect is to unplug and do not forget that phone wire to your Computer. Tomorrow i am making a call to a house that was hit ,there is a hole in the ground and the satellite wire came out of the ground just like a trench was dug. |
