New Things Happening at Habitat

Hi everyone, I know it must seem strange that this blog is just restarting now. We have had some changes around our little Habitat for Humanity affiliate. I'm Sherri and I have been running the eBay site for the pasy few months. I've kinda had to learn as I go. I didn't realize until today that someone had started this blog (she was already gone when I got here).

First, let me tell you a little bit about our organization. We are Habitat for Humanity of Dodge County. An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat is a non profit Christian organization that build and rehabs housing in an effort to end poverty housing and homelessness. Each affiliate works as an individual entity, but operates under the bylaws of Habitat International. We here in Dodge County have recently completed a 9 house build (we are very proud of this accomplishment). We are now in the fund raising mode in preparation for our next build, which is what led to the eBay site. We also operate a thrift store here in Dodge County as a means of fund raising. All the money we receive on the eBay site and the store goes directly to our Habitat. We gladly accept donations of any kind and our eBay site is set up as a giving works site, so you can donate part of your sales to it if you wish. All donations are tax deductible.

We have families on a waiting list now in need of a home when we start our next build. Habitat is not a give away program. Homeowners must put in time as sweat equity and have a job so they can pay the mortgage on a low/no interest loan. Because Habitat uses volunteer labor, we can build houses for about half of what it would cost to build in the retail market. By doing this, homeowners can afford the small mortgages that come with these houses.

Homeowners also have to assume the responsibility of homeownership, including up keep of the house and property. We don't just put these families in houses and leave them, we provide mentoring and support even after they are in the house. I have seen this program put families back together. If you have never been to a Habitat home dedication,  I invite you to go. There is nothing like watching these families receive their home. They come through the experience with a greater sense of community and a renewed self worth. They are not just proud of the home, they are proud of themselves and I am so proud for them........What a great experience. Thank you. Any help you can give is greatly needed and more than appreciated........Sherri

An Invitation

As we sit here in front of the computer, after searching for a while on EBAY to learn all about other sellers and buyers, we wonder what to do next? How do we make our items sell?

What makes our items so much more special? First of all, these items were once loved, were once worn(or not worn), touched, utilized in homes of some very special people in our community. We have clothes, toys, a musical truck, racing collectibles and even a sink!

There is more to come and we hope to make this a daily thing, with different treasures posted.

Come visit us and buy from us.
