"Kentucky's Covered Bridges", Personalized Book From Author & Photographer Melissa JurgensenPosted Sep-25-07 04:52:13 PDT Updated Feb-27-08 13:46:20 PST Kentucky's Covered Bridges by Melissa C. Jurgensen
In December of 2006 Melissa Jurgensen received the commission of Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor one can receive in the Commonwealth, from Governor Ernie Fletcher.
Kentucky is well recognized for bourbon, bluegrass and the Kentucky Derby. When thinking of covered bridges, the Commonwealth is not the state that really comes to mind. Many of Kentucky's covered bridges were built by such men as Wernwag, Bower, Carothers, Day, Stone and Long, but many of the builders; names were never recorded.
Kentucky was once home to the longest single-span wooden bridge in the world and to a covered bridge through which a Civil War battle was fought. Time, arson, progress, neglect and misguided maintenance have spelled the demise of the majority of these structures, according to Jergensen. The book, "Kentucky's Covered Bridges" is long overdue as there has never been a book written of this kind that focuses not only on the 13 covered bridges that are still standing in the Commonwealth but many of the bridges that are no longer standing. Kentucky once had over 700 documented covered bridges but today, only 13 remain standing. While many of these bridges were never photographed or the photos were lost to time, this book contains over 200 photos of 110 of those bridges. It reveals many never seen vintage photographs of the bridges, including many of the bridges that stood in Harrison County (Cynthiana, Lair and Claysville) and the surrounding area. The book also serves to dispel myths and misreported facts, such as the covered bridge in Butler (Pendleton County) being the longest in the world, which it was not, and that the King's Mill Covered Bridge is still on the bottom of Lake Herrington, which it is not. Bio: Melissa C. Jurgensen – Ms. Jurgensen is a Louisville native and is an executive legal secretary, Ky covered bridge historian, author, photographer and world traveler. Her interest in covered bridges started in approximately 1989 when after moving to rural Harrison County, a neighbor advised her of the nearby Colville Covered Bridge. Always loving history and architecture, she was fascinated by the bridge and began visiting and photographing Kentucky's existing covered bridges as well as researching past bridges. Since that time she has also photographed bridges in Ohio and Indiana.
Melissa regularly travels around the state speaking to historical societies and other groups about Kentucky’s covered bridges. She has written a book on Kentucky’s covered bridges and is in the process of writing a second. Her writings have also appeared in newsletters for the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, the Kentucky Covered Bridge Association, the Indiana Covered Bridge Society, the Ohio Historic Bridge Association and the Zumbrota, Minnesota Covered Bridge Society, and various newspapers in the state of Kentucky.
