Tonight I will be trying out a new squash casserole recipe on our new gas range. I hope it's good. Wish my wife and kids luck.

Nothing New except PlansPosted Aug-03-08 22:34:16 PDT So... Not really a lot going on here. I have a few projects in the works. Actually they are more in the planning stages than the works. I will be putting in a horseshoe pitching lane in the back yard. My buck stove still needs to be bricked in on the patio. I am planning a weekend backpacking trip soon and I am the process of building my own ultra-light stove (I will try to get pics up soon). Work is going well. According to the MRI, there is nothing wrong with my neck, even though the nerve conduction study says there is. Wierd, huh? I have set up a Facebook site, so I will probably be hooked on it as well as ebay. I am in the process of saving up for a canoe. I hope I will be able to get one by Christmas, if not my Birthday. I want to paddle the Enoree River, the Tyger River, and The South Fork of the Edisto River. Awww! Not Again!!!!Posted Jul-14-08 00:20:46 PDT There is something to be said about doing things more than once. For instance, Teusday evening, I get to go for my 2nd MRI. I don't have to be nerveous about what to expect. I know that I will have to empty my pockets of all metal and credit cards. I will have to lie very still and breath very slowly. I might even fall asleep during the 45 minute event. There will be a lot of loud noises decreasing the possibility of sleep but not by much. And last but not least, there will be a HUGE bill from the hospital. And all this to take a ride in a machine that looks like this. The first time I had to have an MRI - less than a month ago - was to diagnose shoulder pain. Possible torn rotator cuff. Yes, there was a tear. No, the tear is not causing the problems you are having. Next comes the nerve conduction study. Now that is a fun one. I got to watch my hand and arm flop around on the table like a fish. No problem with the shoulder, elbow or wrist. You do though have some trouble in your neck. Next MRI is ordered. If we find what we think we will find, you might need surgery. Q - Surgery of what? A - The neck. Hey! Now that sounds like a lot of fun! Any one out there in EBAY land ever had neck surgery? Something was said about C8 and the possibility of a bulging or ruptured disc. Any thoughts would be appreciated. "Are You Gonna Eat That?" Sayings from the Texicalli GrillPosted Jul-09-08 23:53:11 PDT Updated Jul-09-08 23:56:54 PDT Have you ever had a really nasty craving? I'm not talking about the Laverne & Shirley "Milk and Coke" or a pregnant woman's midnight urges for "Pickles and Ice Cream", but a really nasty hankering for a dish or a meal you had at a restaurant? The only thing is, the restaurant is now out of business, or maybe they changed their menu, and no longer offer that particular delicacy.
I had just that problem recently, only in my particular case it was because I moved out of state. I have had the craving for a big plate of Queso Fries and a special sandwich I have only been able to find in South Austin.
Tonight, while looking for the specific menu items, so I could list my cravings by name, I learned that my favorite restaurant in the entire world, went out of business in 2007
You see, I used to live in South Austin, TX, just West of I-35 and South of Town Lake. I know that Austin is world renowned for a lot of things (music, governors, heck, even the City Limits are famous), but what I love best about the city is the food. Austin has places like Threadgill's, Amy's Icecream, The Broken Spoke, Chuy's, El Arroyo. But First and foremost, Austin was the Home of the Texicalli Grill. The Texicalli was located just down the road from my High School Alma Mater, William B Travis High School, at
534 E Oltorf St
Austin, TX 78704-5639
![]() The owner, Danny Young, took over the building from the Taco Bell. But when I stepped into the place, I knew I was home. The interior was decorated the way my parents would not let me decorate my room. Not one square inch of the walls or ceiling was visible. I'm not talking about the normal poster type wallpapering, there were... Just look at the picture and you will see for yourself.
I used to live at the Texicalli. Well, not really live, but I would eat there at least 3 days a week. At first I was unsure of the place - after all, it used to be a Taco Bell! But it did not take long for me to warm up to the place. It would not be uncommon to hear me say "Are you gonna eat that?" when my plate would be empty and yours would not.
The Texicalli Grill holds a special place in my stomach and Danny Young, the unofficial mayor of South Austin, holds a special place in my heart. I will miss you both. I don't know how to separate one from the other. I don't know if I will ever see Danny again, or if I will have the heart to drive past the former Texicalli Grill, but I will always remember your bigger than life personality and your beautifully decorated, former Taco Bell, of a restaurant. It is a Never Ending Vicious CyclePosted Jun-26-08 14:03:41 PDT I did it. I made a "TO DO" list. I actually sat down and started writing out the different things I needed to get accomplished around the house. I am not an organized person (my mind just doesn't work that way). Anyway - pen was put to paper and a list came into existence. I even labeled it and put little bulletin points out to the side for emphasis. It looks very important.
So I have this list, and I am sitting there trying to triage the situation – you know, put the most important things first. Or, should I put the tasks that should take me the longest first? But if I did that I would see very little progress, I should reverse the order and put the task that will be finished in the shortest amount of time first.
Ok, now I have an ordered list, with bullet points and everything. I even make it out the door to get started on Item # 1, or better yet “*”. Where are the tape measure and the hammer? Why can’t I ever put stuff back where I can find it? I now use this as the perfect opportunity to re-organize the garage and the utility room (NOT ON THE LIST).
Day one is shot and I am half-way through the garage. The garage is in a shambles and I took a peek at the “TO DO” list to see what it was I should be doing. To my surprise the list has grown (That’s not my handwriting!!!). I now go find my wife to find out what she means by items
* * and *
At this pace I will never fish the list. I inform her that once a list has been started she is no longer allowed to add to it (that was a fun and informative conversation).
We have now agreed that she is now allowed to start a new list but not add to the current list.
What's For Dinner? Squash CasserolePosted Jun-20-08 12:17:19 PDT Updated Jun-25-08 08:47:26 PDT Tonight I will be trying out a new squash casserole recipe on our new gas range. I hope it's good. Wish my wife and kids luck.
Pre-heat your oven to 350 F The squash is from our very own garden. To see a picture of the garden check out my other blog at the following link -- http://ejea-treehouse.blogspot.com/ -- We will also be having chicken from a Tyler Florence recipe I pulled from the Food Network website. My Square Foot GardenPosted Jun-20-08 05:51:19 PDT ![]() Can you believe the price of food? We had to spend $80 to fill up the van, and now we are spending double on groceries. What is a growing family to do? I thought about drilling for oil and setting up a mini-refinery at the very back of my yard, but I can't realistically drill for oil. I have been "shootin' at some food" in my backyard, and there has not been any "bubblin' crude... oil that is, black gold, Texas Tea", but I am doing my part to keep us from burning so much gas to go to the grocery store and also to not buy as much while we are there. A little over a month ago I got a book on gardening from the Calhoun Falls library (they do have a very small library with a GREAT librarian). The book was by Mel Bartholomew, and it was called "Square Foot Gardening". I read it and was instantly converted. Please visit Mel's website for more information on this wonderfully easy way to install and maintain a very productive garden. The web address is -- http://www.squarefootgardening.com/ -- and will give you pictures and info on how to start your own garden. I am sure this sounds like a commercial for FT2 gardening but I assure you it's not - Mel is ETV - so this is actually brought to you by the "GOV'MENT". So far I have 2-4x4 blocks, 1-1x5 block, and a few 1x1 squares scattered here and there. Out of this I am able to grow:
I don't know if you can tell from the photo, but I still have 8 sqft of space that has nothing in it. As soon as I figure out what to plant, I will fill these spaces. I also have plans on putting in at least 4 more 4x4 beds, but that will be later in the year when it's not so HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you enjoy the pictures. Dreams do come true!!!Posted Jun-18-08 11:40:52 PDT Now We're Cookin'... With Gas!!!![]() Don't let anyone tell you that dreams will not come true. I have been wanting a gas range for the kitchen for the longest time, but I have been unwilling to spend the money$$$ on a new range while the old one was still functioning. My wife tells me I am a tightwad. Well, just the other day she noticed a crack in the glass-top stove while she was cleaning it. She called me in from the garage to look at it. To my surprise the cook top was not just cracked, it was shattered. Something had fallen out of the cabinet and cracked the pyrex cook-top. I did a little checking on the internet to see how much a replacement glass would cost. With an enourmous grin on my face, I informed my wife that it would cost more to repair the stove than if we bought a new one. A new gas burning range with 5 burners now sits where that horrible electric glass-top unit stood. I hated that stove with a passion. Now don't get the wrong idea. I did not willingly, purposefully, nor knowingly drop anything on the stove. I did not even know about the damage untill it was brought to my attention. I was not even happy that I had to go buy a new stove. But I was jumping up and down with excitement about the GAS stove that was installed yesterday morning. NOW YOUR COOKIN' WITH GAS, BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Treehouse is Complete!Posted Jun-03-08 13:39:42 PDT Updated Jun-18-08 11:47:14 PDT
What an experience! I have learned way more than I thought I could about deck/tree house building (especially at more than 8 feet in the air). My next project for the treehouse is furniture. It has a small picnic table that is on it's last leg (soon to be replace w/ a custom built table and chairs). What I can't build, I plan to buy from Ebay!
Pics of the treehouse at about 90% complete can be seen by clicking on the following link. http://picasaweb.google.com/ebhudgens/Treehouse |
