COMMON TYPES OF LEATHER-Type OnePosted Mar-24-07 16:16:10 PDT Cowhide - Cowhide is a top-grain finish. It is extremely durable, but easy to break in. Makes a very comfortable garment. Cowhide can vary greatly in thickness from .8mm. The thickness can be as great as 1/8 inch in thickness. These thicker cowhide leather is mostly used in making belts and saddlery. The grain of this type of leather can be from extremely smooth all the way down to a uniform pebble grain pattern. You will find that the cheaper grains may contain a pattern resembling spider webs. You get what you pay for! Don't be shy! If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask. I may not be a top expert, but I have amassed some knowledge. And your question may help me learn more! CLEANING SUEDEPosted Mar-12-07 13:56:56 PDT Updated Mar-12-07 14:06:51 PDT To clean split cowhide suede and 'hair-on' garments, rub baking soda in a circular motion. Let it stand overnight. Then brush the baking soda out with a soft brush. Most of the dirt will be lifted out of your suede garment. * To be sure this process does not discolor your garment, always test on an 'out of site' area first. MAINTAINING LEATHER JACKETSPosted Mar-07-07 04:19:08 PST To keep your jacket looking good and the leather healthy periodically condition it with Lexol Conditioner or Meltonian Leather Lotion. The leather can also be treated with a water repellent such as Meltonian Water and Stain Protector to help protect it from the elements. |
