Archive - September 2007 Your Friendship - Can Your Friends Count On You?Posted Sep-07-07 13:37:13 PDT Friendship personality: Friendship is one of the greatest relationships, isn't it? True friends do not hesitate giving their lives for their friend's benefit. We have heard stories of great friendships since childhood. What about you? Do you think you are a good friend? Are you friendly? If you believe that you are friendly, why do you think that? Did you take any feedback from your friends about this? Or this is your impression? Sometimes we think and believe that we are very friendly, while our friends have different ideas. We change and improve only after we ask our friends. Let us quiz ourselves about our friendship personality and find out if our friends can count on us. Let us become self-critic for a moment. Listen to your innerself while reading this and be honest with yourself. Friendship commitment: How committed are to your friends? Do you nurture friendships? How many old friends can you count, or do you keep breaking off with your old friends, setting them aside and make new ones constantly replenishing? Do you always try to find some fault in your friends? Or you accept them as they are and learn to make a bond. What is the bond of friendship? How many of us think about these questions that shape our friendships? Not many, but we need to do that. And love and cherish those bonds. Friendship loyalty: We can count on a friend only if we are sure that our friend will not let us down in the moment of crisis. Without asking many questions and criticizing us, our friends will rally around us and help us fight. Can your friends expect this behavior from you? If yes, you are a person who can be counted upon. Be a good friend and get good friends in return. Start Your Own Online Craft BusinessPosted Sep-07-07 13:21:11 PDT Start Your Own Online Craft Business Many crafters out there have given up traveling to craft fairs every weekend. Instead they are selling their crafts on the Internet. If this is something you’ve though about, but dismissed due to a lack of familiarity with ecommerce or the Internet in general, you may want to reconsider. You too can sell your crafts online. It might be much simpler than you think. So many developers and supportive websites exist out there today, that even complete computer novices can start their own online craft business. You can do something as simple as a blog where you advertise just a few items to a large multi-page website featuring an ecommerce store, online shopping cart, message boards, etc. The craft industry is booming, not just domestically, but internationally as well. You can join this rapidly expanding business, not just selling your own crafts, but selling craft supplies also. Starting your own ecommerce store can be as simple as a few clicks away. There are even online craft resources that provide free hosting and setup. Etsy is a powerhouse in the online craft industry. They will help you start your very own online store for free. From there it is just a matter of taking a few pictures of your crafts, determining a sale price and uploading that information to your website. Etsy is just one of many online resources available to crafters. Another option is to sell your crafts on a site like Ebay or Amazon, or look for online craft stores that are looking for vendors. A great many crafters are willing to sell your crafts for you for a small commission. Or you could just stick with Ebay or Amazon. They have tremendous exposure and are trusted sites. Most people feel more comfortable making purchases from names they know. The downside to this is your crafts could be lost among their huge inventory. Maybe you’d like to build your own site from the ground up and sell your crafts there. That, too, can be easier than you might imagine. There are a great many web building software packages available, many of which can be downloaded free. You can also find free or very economical web hosting. But don’t stop there. If you build your own site, you can increase your revenue by placing ads on your site. The ideas for crafters to start their own online craft business are endless. Search the web for inspiration and ideas. Once you find out what your online goals are, start looking for support or software to get started. Don’t be afraid to join craft forums and ask other crafters how they got started. Sometimes it’s as simple as just asking a question to get you started on an exciting new online craft adventure.
I really wanted to share this piece with you

Healthy Salad Dressings Made EasyPosted Sep-06-07 10:32:20 PDT With warmer weather looming on the horizon in Northern America, many women and men start to simplify and streamline their diets. Gone are the heavy chili dinners and beef stews that fill our bellies in the dead of winter. Enter the salad: cool, fresh, crisp bursts of flavor - but not necessarily a significant caloric savings over a meat and potatoes dinner. The culprit: creamy, oil based dressings. The solution: for most, it's to take their dressing on the side. Traditional commerically prepared salad dressings are an easy way to turn a healthy salad into a calorie-dense, fat-laden disaster. Bottled dressings can have anywhere from 8 to 20 grams of fat per serving. Take your dressing on the side? Never! At least, there’s never a need when you make your own healthy salad dressings. Of course, you can buy decent commercial low-fat dressings, or even organic dressings but, more often than not, they are loaded with unhealthy elements like sugar and heavy amounts of heart-unhealthy sodium. It’s hard, however, to beat a homemade dressing! The key to making delicious healthy dressings at home is to reduce the oils and other fats, and bump up the ingredients that add texture and flavor. The oil in any salad dressing serves several functions, including providing a “cling" or "binding" factor, so your acidic and other flavorings (such as vinegar and herbs) don’t end up in a puddle at the bottom of the bowl. Oil also serves to soften and balance the acids so that they're more pleasing to the pallate. When thinking of healthier dressings, most people eschew creamy dressings in favor of lighter vinaigrettes. But classic vinaigrettes often use a 3-to-1 or 4-to-1 ratio of fat to acid (for example: olive oil and red wine vinegar). Such a ratio can yield at least 10 grams of fat per tablespoon! And who uses just one tablespoon? So what constitutes a healthy salad dressing? Let's look at oil. When choosing oils for your dressing, think carefully about flavors. Extra-virgin olive oil is almost always an excellent healthful and flavorful choice. But so are nut oils such as almond, macadamia and hazelnut. Each contributes complex yet subtle flavors that can complement a salad. Olive and nut oils also are rich in healthy monounsaturated fats. You can reduce the amount of oil, however, in any dressing by approximately 40 percent if the other ingredients that balance the dressing are not too acidic. A common complaint when reducing the oil content of a dressing recipe is that one often misses the thick texture that oil adds to your recipes. Try adding Dijon mustard as an emulsifier to make up for the reduced oil. Like oil, mustard is thick enough to bind the other ingredients and adds a tangy flavor. In creamy dressings, the emulsifier often is sour cream or mayonnaise (and sometimes oil, too). Providing a healthy option for these ingredients is an easy fix. Nonfat yogurt, reduced-fat sour cream, and reduced-fat mayonnaise all make good substitutes. They each have good flavor and produce dressings that hold together and coat vegetables quite well. Or try buttermilk. Buttermilk is always either nonfat or reduced-fat. Its thick texture and mild, tangy flavor makes it a useful ingredient. With a little bit of ingenuity and creativity, it is possible to make healthy salad dressings without sacrificing good nutrition by cutting calories, fat and chemicals.
Spring Into EnchantmentPosted Sep-06-07 10:18:44 PDT Updated Sep-06-07 10:19:23 PDT Who can control a smile sneaking across your face as you go outside on a beautiful spring day, suddenly finding your nostrils filled with a sweet aroma of fresh blooms, while feeling warm breezes against your skin, whispering, “No coat today.”? Nature provides enchantment all around us in the spring. The birds sing, the flowers bloom, animals have their babies, new birds learn to fly. If you look high up in a tree you might see an exquisite bird singing loudly, full of life. It is as if nature gives humans an opportunity for enchantment all around. Yet, we often are indifferent, not responding spontaneously to the rebirth of spring. We seem to be, at times, equipped to live lives of misery brought on by ourselves. Many of us are able to generate a bad mood, put ourselves down, see our future as dark or today as gloomy. We have lost or never had the easy comfort and capacity to relax and enjoy life that a cat has on a sunny porch just snoozing and rolling over. We humans have to work at enchantment. Let s take a moment and look at what the major components of this work called “enchantment” are. To experience what we call THE ENCHANTED SELF, that is positive states of mind and body again and again, a person must be able to develop three capacities. The first is the ability to successfully meet one s needs. This can be challenging when we find ourselves committed or obligated to be elsewhere or doing other things. There is a saying, “If you can t go to the mountain than bring the mountain to you.” You may yearn to be outdoors playing sports or gardening but find yourself stuck indoors at home or at work. Opening the windows to let fresh air in, displaying a vase of colorful flowers on a table are some of the ways that can enable you to experience a spring day.
Here is an exercise to get you started: Close your eyes and let your mind wander back to something that you loved to do as a child in the spring. Did you like to climb trees? Did you like to ride a bike? Go fishing? Run? Catch lightning bugs at night? Think about the way your body felt as you did this activity. Did you feel excited? Did you feel particularly alive and alert? Did you feel relaxed? Think about how you felt when the activity was over. Were you exhausted? Were you revitalized? Were you hungry? Now list some of the skills that were necessary to perform that activity. For example, if you used to love to climb trees, some of the skills might have been agility or arm strength to lift yourself onto branches. Another skill was probably good balance. Do you still have these skills? If so, what would you like to try at this stage of your life that might let you get back in touch with the physical pleasures that you were so naturally in touch with as a child? Perhaps dancing or lifting weights or rock climbing? Whatever your physical pleasure may have been, lift it out, dust it off, and use it. And most important, enjoy! If you do not have these skills, what are some alternatives? Perhaps rather than tree climbing you could stretch in all directions, lying on a mat or on a soft carpet. This will require much less in the way of balance or risk-taking. Perhaps you would enjoy a risk-taking adventure via a book, movie or a computer game. Reinvention of yourself in order to experience pleasure is a never ending pursuit. How do we finally begin to generate a world of enchantment? It is very simple. If you are leading an enchanted life you will quickly see that you send out positive energies and positive messages. Before you know it, there is a mutuality of shared enchantment going on.
Laughter is infectious, good moods are catching, and like the birds singing, all of these happy reflections of harmony are resonated again and again as they move out in ever expanding circles. We hope you will take some time to spring into enchantment and to let yourself move from feeling enchanted to being truly enchanting. |
