THAI ICED COFFEE

excerpt from http://www.ringsurf.com/online/2111-thai_iced_coffee.html

Just like any other type of coffee drink, there are numerous recipes available that are designed to tweak the drink to suit your particular taste buds.  With the recipe for Thai Iced Coffee listed below, you will be able to have a framework to how to make a good cup of Thai Iced Coffee.  Feel free to experiment with this recipe to create the perfect Thai Iced Coffee for you.  To make a great cup of Thai Iced Coffee, just follow these easy steps:

  1. Brew up a pot of very strong coffee.  It is recommended that you have 50% to 100% more coffee to water than you would usually have when you are making a regular cup of coffee.  To get the best taste, it is advised that you use a coffee blend like Cafe DuMonde or another blend that contains chicory.
  2. Pour six to eight ounces of this coffee into a cup and add 1 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk.
  3. Stir this mixture up and pour the mix over some ice in a separate glass.

However, if you want to make a cup of Thai Iced Coffee that is similar to the drink that you can order in Thai restaurants throughout the country, there is a separtate recipe.  Known as oleng to coffee lovers who agree that this drink is stronger than regular Thai iced coffee, this drink contains a much stronger kick and some may say, a better taste.  To make a cup of oleng, just follow these steps.  Remember there's always room for experimentation when making a cup:

  1. Place 4 to 6 green cardamon pods and 6 to 8 tablespoons of ground dark-roast coffee into your coffee maker, whether it is a French press, espresso machine, or the filter of an automatic drip coffee maker.  To learn more about the different styles of coffee makers, check out the article Coffee Makers.
  2. Brew the coffee and add some sugar.  If you are brewing the coffee using an automatic drip coffee maker, use half the water that you usually would when brewing a pot of coffee.
  3. Pour coffee into a large glass filled with ice leaving 1/2 inch at the top of the glass.  Add some half and half cream.
  4. Sit back and enjoy the soothing taste of a specialty Thai Iced Coffee!

Have you ever found yourself on a hot summer's day in desperate need of a coffee fix?  However, the weather is so hot that any cup of coffee that you drink will lose a lot of its satisfactory feel.  This is a predicament that thousands or even millions of coffee lovers find themselves in.  While hot coffee has a texture and aftertaste that most other beverages can't match, it is also a drink that is unsuited to the heat of summer.  However, you don't have to fret, as you can just turned to iced coffee for your coffee fix.  While iced coffee (which you can learn more about in the article Iced Coffee) does have its advantages, many coffee lovers prefer a drink that has a little bit more flavor to it.  While these coffee lovers may fear that they need to switch their desired drink to something like iced tea, there is one solution that is available to them: Thai Iced Coffee.

While most people associate specialty coffee drinks with Italy, the country responsible for the espresso, cappuccino, and mocha, the deliciously sweet drink of Thai Iced Coffee originates from, guess where, Thailand!  Thailand is located in one of the most premier coffee growing areas in the world and the Thai Iced Coffee drink is a beverage that is loved in both Thailand and throughout the word.  After all, who is going to argue against a Thai drink considering all of the great Thai food that Thailand is responsible?

Thai red tea leaves are blended with star anise, cinnamon, and vanilla. The steeped tea then is flavored with sugar, and after being cooled is mixed with cream and often condensed milk for a refreshing creamy drink
6 cups water
1 cup Thai tea
3/4 cup sugar
6 tablespoons cream
6 tablespoons condensed milk
In a kettle, bring the water to a boil. Place the tea in a teapot or glass container. Pour the water over the tea and let steep until bright orange in color, 3 to 5 minutes. Strain into a clean container, such as a pitcher (or, if in tea bags, remove the bags). Add sugar and stir to dissolve. Let cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Fill 6 tall glasses with crushed ice and add tea to 3/4 full. Add 1 tablespoon cream and 1 tablespoon condensed milk to each glass.

Serve with iced-tea spoon so guests can swirl the mixture themselves.
