Create today! Digital Scrapbooking Basics - Digital vs TraditionalPosted Aug-26-07 09:46:28 PDT This guide is your introduction to the amazing world of digital scrapbooking and all of the advantages and creative opportunities it can offer you versus the traditional paper techniques you may already be familiar with. As many of us are transitioning from film to digital photgraphy, we are faced with the dilemma that instead of shoeboxes overflowing with pictures, we now have hard drives clogged with our families' treasured memories. Either way, our memories suffer the same fate: hidden from view and unable to be shared. In the past, the solution was to drag out the boxes of photos, stacks of cardstock and decorative papers, runners of tape, pens of glue, binders of stickers, and little tins of various embellishments. After commandeering the dining table, kitchen table, coffee table, family room floor or other large clear area of space, we would then proceed to crop, glue, and trim our way to a neat little scrapbook page which we could then add journaling and a page protector to for a completed layout. Of course, that all depended on the dining table not needing to used used for actual dining, and that the boxes, binders, and piles of supplies would remain undisturbed by the menagerie of dogs, cats, and kids which inhabit all of our homes. Sound familiar? Ever found the little pull tabs from the back of adhesive photo splits in the baby's crib? We've all been there. Enter: digital scrapbooking! By scrapbooking digitally, we can overcome all of these obstacles and open up even more advantages and creative opportunities over traditional paper scrapping. Here is a rundown of the top advatages for switching to digital:
LIMITED SPACE REQUIREMENTS:
UNLIMITED SUPPLIES: CUSTOMIZABLE SUPPLIES: These two layouts show one of my paper layouts on the left, and a digital one on the right. The difference is staggering. It's like seeing a newspaper versus a magazine.
Once you master the basics, you can even create your own elements and papers. These pictures below all feature a paper of my design. It is the same paper, but I have altered its color for each separate layout. The swirly "tattoo" that accents the lower right corner of each photo is also the same element, recolored three ways to fit each layout.
SUPPORT & EDUCATION: SPEED TOOLS ARE AVAILABLE: An example of how the templates are used is shown below. A page template is combined with the kit elements to create a finished page. It is super quick and super easy!
MORE CRAFT OPTIONS ABOUND What are you waiting for? Let's get scrapping! P.S. Stay tuned for the next issue, which will include a glossary of common digital scrapbooking terms and how they'll apply to your creations! Also check back for future issues where we'll delve into some tips and techniques for using your software to create stunning pages! Starting Out:This is the start of something new for me...blogging! My first post is my introduction, my about me, why you should read what I have to say.Posted Aug-25-07 20:21:27 PDT Updated Aug-25-07 20:25:51 PDT I am a wife and mom of three, ages seven, nine, and thirteen (yikes!). I am passionate about photography, scrapbooking and preserving family memories and histories. I also am crazy about working with my computer. I have been a seller (and buyer, of course!) on eBAY for several years. I love to sell vintage sewing patterns and related items, as well as other various fun things I find along the way. I have long been a traditional paper "scrapper", but have recently become infatuated with the digital version. I began as a consultant for Creative Memories and still use their albums, so I am creating the new digital layouts to work in my CM albums. Some people prefer to just keep everything digital, without printing them out, but that makes no sense to me, since the best part is sharing the photos with everyone! I have begun designing my own digital kits and tools with and for PhotoShop Elements (search here for your own copy), as well as authoring my new how-to guides. My exclusive "Scrap-In-A-Flash" template/page kit CDs will be hitting my store later this week. My "digital scrapbooking basics" series will be your introduction, overview and common sense approach to getting started, getting organized and creating digital pages of your own. I have 2 guides out so far, with more to come. These appear in the Guides & Reviews section of eBay. Issue #1, The Digital Advantage, is a discussion of Digital vs Traditional and how going digital will help keep you sane and able to actually FINISH some layouts and albums! Issue #2, is my Glossary of Common Terminology used in digital scrapbooking to help familiarize you with the process. The creation of Guides at eBAY limits the number of photos allowed in each to only 10, and limits linking to inside-eBAY links only. Since digital scrapbooking is a very visual thing, my guides will also appear here as blog posts to expand upon the subjects with more photos and details like websites for sources mentioned in the guides, although I am not promoting or selling anything off-eBAY, just listing for you as resources so you may do your own research. These first two will be followed by more a few more "Basics" to keep you organized and such, while future editions will feature more advanced tutorials on working with your editing program to achieve professional results in a snap! I look forward to sharing with you as we scrap along the digital way!
