Top NFL Football PicksPosted Sep-13-08 11:59:01 PDT Consider first what are your reasons to engage in sports betting? Are you doing that out of a friendly bet? Is it because your favorite home team is playing and you would want to show your support even if just through betting? Or are you in it for the big gains? Well, whatever your purpose may be then if you're reading this and searching out for info on sports betting, then you must be in it seriously. Let me help you with that with a few tips on how to conduct a good NFL Football pick so you can start winning. Research is the key That's right. Although this may come as a natural advice, but you might be surprised to find out that there are hundreds of bettors out there who place bets out of a whim. They just play with their gut feel. While this may net them a good win or two, it is a haphazard way to play and will surely end in losses in the long run. You must have a well-researched NFL Football pick to start with. Football is a science, statistics is a science so I believe it is equally imperative that you approach sports betting as a science, too. Here are a few things you must consider in your research: 1. Every good NFL Football pick is backed with reliable information. Stats if you would prefer to call it. Know everything that there is to know about the players and the teams. Keep this line in mind though, because I will stress more about the importance of getting these pieces of information later on. 2. Did your choice of players or teams played well last season? This is important because you can practically guess the outcome of the coming season based on their performances in the last outing. Players and teams can have winning streaks and it can continue well into the next season. 3. Are there injuries you will have to contend with? Did any of the major players incur serious injuries? You must also consider the health of the backup players because as they say, a winning team is only as good as its second bit players. It is vital in making your NFL Football pick that you are aware of and understand the general health and well-being of your players. 4. The last and probably the most intriguing tip that I can give to you is to not be ashamed to admit that you need help. Understanding all of these information such as the statistics, the injuries and the performances of all, and I emphasize the word all, of these teams and players is the single vital strategy in your NFL Football pick decisions. Take for example the injuries of these players. Not only do you have to know the type of injuries they incurred, but you must understand the repercussions these can bring to your team or the players' performances. Every injury is important because well obviously, an unhealthy player is virtually useless in a game. He can be great liability. You must also know if the injury will persist or if that player can recover in time to eventually have a good season performance. Perhaps it is too daunting for you to amass and analyze of these information. That's where a professional can help you. You will find the assistance of good sportsbooks, handicappers and other sports analysts vital in helping you to continuously win. Chris Grisham is a professional sports bettor living in the USA. What is ..Fantasy FootballPosted Sep-13-08 11:57:16 PDT It is almost that time of year again, football season. Football is the most popular sport in the United States and every year generates a ton of interest and creates a lot of excitement. Over the past several years it has even spawned a very popular game, fantasy football. Perhaps you have heard of fantasy football, but do not really understand what it is. You may think that it is everyone's fantasy to play football and that it is some sort of daydreaming thing that people waste their time with. However, this is false. Fantasy football is a complete game that is available to be played by hard core football fanatics as well as casual fans. Below is a brief introduction to fantasy football so that you can become a little more familiar with it. Basic Structure In fantasy football, the players are called owners. These owners "own" a team. The owners do not own a specific football team (such as the Tennessee Titans), but instead have the opportunity to put players from all different teams onto their one team. This is why it is called fantasy football, because you get to build your own fantasy team, trying to put your favorite quarterback and wide receivers together and so forth. In most leagues, the owners put together their teams through a draft. The owners take turns drafting the players, once a player is drafted no other owner may have that player on their team. The draft lasts as long as the owners agree to have it last, with the typical draft lasting 12 - 14 rounds. The owners agree as to what the roster limit will be. The owners also agree what the starting lineups should be. For example, they can agree to have the starting lineup be a quarterback, two running backs, three receivers, one tight end, a kicker, and a defense. The owners are free to adjust this how they see fit. One of the owners is designated as the commissioner, and it is his duty to oversee the fantasy football league and make sure that everything runs smoothly. He will settle any disputes and help the other players as needed. Points The players on the teams score points for the actions taken by the real players on the football field each week. For example, running backs will get points for how many yards they run and for how many touchdowns they score. The owners agree as to what it takes to score points and how many points to award for certain actions. In Person League or Online There are two choices to joining a fantasy football league. You can join up with friends and acquaintances and create your own league. Or you can join an online league and play with people you may not know. Two of the more popular fantasy football leagues are Yahoo and ESPN. You can go to their websites to get more information and sign up for a league if you would like. Bicycle Safety IntroductionPosted Sep-13-08 11:48:46 PDT Bicycle Safety Introduction
Bicycling is a common means of transportation as well as an increasingly popular source of recreation, exercise, and sport. With more than 100 million bicycle owners, the popularity of bicycling has reached an all-time high. Along with increased use of bicycles comes the risk of significant injuries. According to national statistics, more than 1.8 billion bicycle outings occur each year, resulting in nearly 580,000 visits to Emergency Departments. Injuries attributable to bicycling range from common abrasions, cuts, and bruises to broken bones, internal injuries, head trauma, and even death. Almost 800 bicyclists die annually, and 20,000 are admitted to hospitals. From a statistical standpoint, bicycle riding has a higher death rate per trip or per mile of travel than being a passenger in an automobile. The most common cause of bicycle crashes is due to falls or collisions with stationary objects. Collisions involving motor vehicles account for 90% of all bicycle-related deaths and 10% of nonfatal injuries. The majority of these bicycle deaths are caused by head injuries. Principles of Bicycle Safety Bicycling training: The best preparation for safe bicycle riding is proper training. Common resources include an experienced rider, parent, or community program. Often, however, initial training involves simple instruction from parents on balance and pedaling. Proper supervision of younger riders is a prerequisite. In fact, it is recommended that younger children ride only in enclosed areas. Bicycle safety equipment: Early investment in safety equipment such as protective clothing and a helmet can prevent a significant number of injuries. Helmets - Extremely important Reflective clothing for nighttime or low-visibility conditions Bicycle safety equipment (reflectors on frame and wheels) Proper bicycle selection Bicycle maintenance Cycling Posters Bicycling safety guidelines: Consideration of these ideas can further reduce the risk of a bicycle accident. Use a bicycle only in a way that is appropriate for the age of the rider. Be aware of the need for experience and skill before bicycling on public roads. Less experienced bicyclists should be educated about the rules of the road. Be aware of the understanding among bicyclists and motorists about sharing the road. Promote and ensure safe motorist and bicyclist practices (proper speed, yielding right-of-way, not driving while drinking). Teach increased awareness of surroundings. (Beware of opening car doors, sewer grating, debris on roads, uneven surfaces, poorly lit areas.) Obey traffic rules. Cyclists must follow the same rules as motorists. Use correct hand signals before turning. Because we are all sharing the same road, obeying the rules of the road will allow for an enjoyable and safe ride for both bicyclists and motorists. Ride in single file with traffic, not against it. Avoid major roads and sidewalks. Announce your presence ("On your left") on bike and walking trails as you come up behind and pass pedestrians and other riders. Enforcement and legislation can increase bicycle safety. Mandating use of protective devices (helmets, reflectors) Bicycle-friendly community and community planning, for example establishing bicycle lanes and bike trails or rails-to-trails Reasons for Bicycle Crashes Most bicycle accidents occur when a cyclist falls or crashes into a stationary object. Crashes are more likely to occur when adverse conditions occur related to: Weather Road conditions Mechanical failure Poor rider judgment Excessive speed Lack of attention Breach of traffic regulations Coordination problems Inexperience Mountain bike Posters Although the rules of the road and right of way are the same for both cyclists and motorists, other factors contribute to the disharmony that can occur between the 2 groups. Many motor vehicle drivers are often simply not aware of the presence of a cyclist on the road. In low-visibility conditions or at night bicyclists are difficult to see. The use of reflectors and a bicycle headlight gives you greater visibility to vehicle drivers. Problems with alcohol can contribute to accidents. Inappropriate alcohol use is not limited to motorists. Almost 25% of traffic crashes that resulted in deaths of bicycle riders involved alcohol intoxication by the motorist or the bicyclist. In 17-30% of all bicycle-related fatalities, it is the bicyclist who was intoxicated, not the motorist. Nearly one-third of bicycle crashes occur when a bicyclist is riding against oncoming traffic. Many people assume bicycle riding on sidewalks is safer than on roads. However, the risk of injury increases significantly if you ride on sidewalks. This may be due to the presence of pedestrians and stationary objects (parking meters, for example) lining sidewalks as well as a preference by inexperienced bicyclists to use sidewalks for bicycle travel. Another common scenario involves children who generally are experienced riders. They tend to crash while riding a bicycle for the first time or while riding a bike they are unfamiliar with. Characteristics of Accident Victims Most bicycle injuries occur to boys aged 10-14 years. Although safety education often focuses on children, older bicyclists must remember that almost 70% of bicycle deaths involve adults. Men account for almost 90% of all bicycle deaths, 7 times higher than rates for women. Officials attribute this to males riding more than females. In analyzing who is at fault for a collision, officials found the bicyclist responsible in half the cases and the motorist responsible in about one third. The remaining were attributed to both parties. Younger cyclists who are not familiar with rules of the road are far more likely to cause and be involved in a serious accident. Some advocate that children younger than 8 years should not be allowed on public roads. Statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveal that most bicycle deaths occur during the summer months, and almost half the deaths occur between 3-9 pm. The risk of sustaining an injury in non daylight conditions is 4 times greater than during daytime. Almost 40% of bicycle-motor vehicle crashes occurred during low-light conditions when motorists had trouble seeing cyclists. Bicycle deaths are almost equal throughout the weekdays or weekends. More bicyclists are killed in urban areas than rural areas. More than half of bicycle deaths occur on major roads; one third of deaths occur at an intersection. One third of bicyclist fatalities occur on roads with speed limits of 55 mph or higher. Typically, bicycle-motorist crashes occur within 1 mile of the bicyclist?s home. Overuse Injuries Physical overuse can also causes bicycle injuries. These injuries can be prevented by proper selection, adjustment of the bicycle to the individual rider, maintenance, and common sense in how the bicycle is used. Appropriately-sized frames, handlebar and seat heights as well as understanding of gear systems help reduce injuries. Drinking enough fluids, stretching, and routine scheduled activity can help avoid potential injuries related to overuse. Legislation Promoting Safety Perhaps the easiest step a rider can take to prevent bicycle related injury and death is to wear a helmet. Unfortunately, many riders disregard this, placing themselves at great risk. Mandatory helmet laws have been shown to increase helmet use, which reduces significantly the incidence and severity of head injuries. Mandatory use of helmets has proven to reduce severe injuries by almost 85% in addition to cutting the number of bicycle-related fatalities. Children wear a protective helmet almost twice as much as adults. This is probably due to parental insistence. Nevertheless, younger children have a higher proportion of head injuries than older children. The majority of bicyclists (98%) report wearing a helmet for safety reasons—70% because of insistence of a parent or spouse and 44% because of laws. Simply owning a helmet will not necessarily insure safety. It must be used! Children should be monitored to be certain that they not avoiding helmet use because of peer pressure. It is important that your helmet fits properly and is worn correctly. A proper fit helps a bicyclist realize the full benefit of helmet use. A poorly fitting helmet will provide significantly less protection. Currently, only 17 states have laws requiring helmet use by young bicyclists. Local communities have enacted ordinances mandating use of helmets while bicycling. It is estimated that 13 million bicycles and 14-15 million helmets are sold annually in the US. There is added benefit for all helmet owners: Use your helmet during other activities with a potential for head injury such as scooters and water sports. Nevertheless, 98% of bicyclists killed in 1998 were reportedly not wearing a protective helmet. It is estimated that two-thirds of bicycle-related deaths could be prevented by the use of a protective helmet. Safety in Off-Road Conditions Bicycle riding has evolved from a mode of transportation to a widely enjoyed hobby and recreational sport. Off-road riding and racing has certainly increased in popularity over the past decade. The majority of off-road injuries involve cuts and scrapes to the arms and legs. However, off-road or all-terrain cyclists sustain more severe injuries—such as fractures and dislocations—than road cyclists. In 1998 bicycling accounted for the largest number of sport-related injuries in Emergency Departments among middle-aged people. are skyrocketing. By following bicycle safety guidelines you reduce your hospital bills. Off-road cyclists are more likely to wear a protective helmet and therefore less likely to have face and head injuries. Sports Fan GenerationPosted Sep-13-08 11:45:43 PDT Welcome to the “what’s in it for me” sports fan generation!
Darwin once stated; “….Natural selection acts only by taking advantage of slight successive variations; she can never take a great and sudden leap, but must advance by short and sure, though slow steps." That’s why you cannot change things with extreme measures, as it’s perceived as a shock to the system. My favorite example is the car, look how the evolution of the Mustang has progressed since the ‘60’s to the Shelby GT 500 of today?
In my own opinion, that’s why internet gaming is taking it’s time to be accepted by the masses and the decision makers at the top, as gaming in all forms needs to be socially accepted by a large part of society, but it’s slowly getting there with the help of the poker, horse racing and fantasy league players.
Nortel Networks had a great slogan in the 90’s; “what do you want the internet to be?”
The same can be said with today’s sports world, it’s not like your fathers and grand father’s sports world anymore. During those years, nobody talked about salaries and they all had a favorite player and team. Since the evolution of the internet, today’s younger generation of fans want a different interest in sports and that’s why sports betting and fantasy leagues have taken away personal allegiances to sports teams. In today’s sports world, bettors and fantasy players care more about certain teams and players on certain nights. It’s all about “what’s in it for me” on this night, winning my wager or collecting some fantasy points!
The evolution of sports business and the way we watch sports is forcing us to make an investment into the sports we are watching and following. When you consider the sports fans are now paying to watch the game that is not in their local market, it’s forcing them to make a decision and an investment. Do you really think the average sports fan wants to pay $400 to $1000 a year on special sports package because it’s a form of entertainment? Perhaps some will, but the majority of the younger and mid generations of sports fans are watching because they have a “special interest” in the game or event they are watching.
This is not about following a certain team or player anymore; this is about ones personal interest and outcome of a game. One of those forms of interest is sports betting, like it or hate it, it’s here to stay! The internet has taken away allot of the networks ad dollars away and that’s why you’re seeing the newspaper industry losing money each quarter. In fact, according to a report last week by Bloomberg, “newspaper advertising has now dropped eight straight quarters… The dollar volume fell to $8.43 billion, which sounds like a lot of advertising—until it is divided among all the nation’s local, regional and national papers.” Other reports suggest they haven’t seen such a decline since the early 80’s, which means the internet is playing a bigger role in all aspects and since the ad dollars aren’t picking up the tab anymore, it’s going to force the consumer to pay for their “on demand” entertainment, such as “sports watching”.
Which brings the question, when will the new “sports fan revolution” take place? If I’m going to spend $400 to $1000 on sports packages and pay per view events, it has to be looked at in some form of an investment like one does in the stock market. Sports bettors or Fantasy league players, who invest in these sports package, want their piece of the pie in some way, so they can get their Return on Investment back! Players leave teams, they don’t care about you or the team; they care about the financial gains that will provide for their own personal growth. When the average sports fans realize it’s not about following a team or a player and more about satisfying your own needs, then the sports fans revolution will start to take place. When a player is a free agent or gets traded, do you really think they are taking the fans into consideration? Of course not, it’s about their own interest, just like bettors and fantasy sports fans look after their own interest when watching a game.
What can we expect in the future from our sports radio and TV stations? I see stations like ESPN, Fox Sports getting less popular, as the Sportscenter type shows will not match the newer shows who treat their shows like a stock market report, with a fantasy sports and betting angle incorporated. Instead of talking about last night’s game, look for sports handicappers and regular bettors playing a bigger role and hyping up the nightly games with gaming tips to help their own personal interest of the night. Plus, the whole sports media is turning everything into a “on-demand” world, so get ready to pay for listening to your favorite radio station and TV station within the next 7 to 10 years. Again, you can’t shock the “system” by making drastic changes, that’s why everything is done with baby steps, or else you will have a negative revolt from those who don’t want to pay or accept the new world order in sports.
There’s a new breed of sports fans out there today and they don’t care about who wins or lose, just as long as they cover the spread baby! Get ready to join the new sports fans revolution and like the slogan goes; “What do you want your sports to be?” Care for AllergyPosted Apr-26-08 08:15:52 PDT Caring for Allergies For many people, sinusitis (inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the facial sinuses) is a nuisance that requires treatment, but not one that's severe enough to be worth a trip to the doctor. Here are some of the options for quick symptom relief at home: Up the humidity. Keeping the membranes inside your nose and sinuses moist is very helpful for relieving congestion and discomfort.
Stay hydrated. Drinking more fluid minimizes dryness and irritation, and helps prevent or treat some headaches. Irrigate the nasal passages. Several devices that go beyond simple nasal sprays can actually flush out your nose and sinuses with saline. This approach isn't for everyone, but some people really love it. Keep the eyes moist. Like nasal sprays, saline eye drops help reduce the pain, itching, and dryness that often come with allergies. Drop the cough. Many cough drops in the form of hard "candies," some with herbal ingredients, can suppress a cough for up to an hour. These can work in different ways, including simply increasing the production of saliva, which helps keep the throat moist and reduce irritation. If you are diabetic or have high blood sugar, be sure to use a sugar-free version. Try cough medicine. The most common active ingredient in these medications is guaifenesin, which is intended to thin out the mucus and make it easier to drain and less irritating in your throat. There is still debate, however, about whether guaifenesin really does any good. The best chance of success is with the higher dose range - 2,400 mg spread throughout the day. The other ingredient to look for in an over-the-counter cough medicine is dextromethrophan, which often is indicated by the letters "DM" in the medication's name. DM works like codeine to prevent coughing, but is not a narcotic and is not addictive. It can cause drowsiness, but for some people that's preferable to the fatigue that comes from all the congestion and coughing. Cough suppressants are available in syrups and tablets. The liquid, syrupy formulations typically have lower doses, and therefore might last only for an hour or two. These syrups also often contain sugar or alcohol, which can be a problem for some people. Kill the pain. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen are the active ingredients in most analgesic painkillers, and can help with many of the bothersome symptoms of sinusitis. Finally, a word about the combination medicines that are designed to treat multiple symptoms in one tablet. Many of these include an Antihistimine, or a Decongestine, or both. The benefit is fewer pills to buy and swallow, but the risk is that you might end up taking some medicines that you don't really need.
