COLWYN BAY FESTIVAL

Well where do I start, just got home from a very enjoyable day in Colwyn Bay,as today a blues festival on our own doorstep was born,Thearte Colwyn played host to a 6 band lineup all received with a warm welcome by the audience, broken into two segments, from 3pm till 11pm,opening proceedings was BADGER BELLS,fronted by the talented `PJ`,who gave us top guitar rifts, along with a cover of `hey joe`,pj is well know in my area as a teacher of the guitar and if you want your children to learn this instrument he`s your man.

Next up,BLUE C now this was different,semi-acoustic `boy/girl `duo, came from Liverpool entertained with their own brand of self penned music, enjoyed `THE LOOP`,

Then those old stagers COMFY CHAIRS,Jim, the willie nelson of the local blues scene, moved along with some good old blues tunes,Yellow moon, floating it for me,thanks Jim.

There followed an hour or so `intermission`,this gave thew first band of the evening session time to do sound check, well worth it,as when the curtain went up SLOWHAN BLUES BAD with a 6 piece lineup stood there, well dressed, clean looking, on the startline and away with their first number, how nice it was to hear a blues band with a sax doing its job, people claped along to Slowhands first numbers,Kevin,a rhyl based music shop owner introduced a flute into the game, what a sound that was along with Phil,Ivor,Charlie ,on guitars, with numbers Little May,Blck Magic Woman,I noticed a larger number of `bums on seats`for their set, compered with the afternoon session,as the weather was hot,it might have kept `passing trade`from the high street,Slowhand was well received went down well.

Usual Suspects, lined up next, for some unknow reason the two guitars, lead & bass proceeded to `out blast` each other, words from the songs we could not hear, the poor lad on keyboards did`nt get a look in,only blues song I got was BLACK MAGIC WOMAN,yes just been played by Slowhand!!!!!Anyway they did their best,we car`nt ask for anything more.

To end the first Colwyn Festival, headline band from Runcorn area Smokehouse Blues,a 4 piece entertained with breakneck speed, fast vibrant `harp`of their frontman, got peoples attention,at first glance on double bass, played in slap style, was a guy who looked a spit image of POTSEY from Happy Days,he got right into it with his own dance routine, their style for me was hettic, fast and soudalike, but they entertained thanks for that.

So to sum up,this event will become a classic in our area of NORTH WALES,a festival that will grow & grow, bands will want to start this event, well done to all that helped to get it on a great venue, pity pubs & clubs did not make more of an effort to support it,as they do for Nantwich, but they should take note for next year,I asked a number of people leaving the venue which band had `done it for them`of the 20 I asked,if there was a medal for the event, then SLOWHAND BLUES BAND would be holding it.

If you got to see any of the bands then please leave a comment on here, thanks again to all for a wonderful days music, well done to all the bands.

SLOWHAND BLUES BAND

The Slowhand Blues Band played a top of the tree set at their first visit,to what seemed like a full to overflowing Nantwich Blues Festival over the Easter Weekend, their venue The Talbot[formaly frog and ferret]was well recevied by blues fans,as a place to watch live bands most Saturday nights.Slowhand played to a full house, which enjoyed some classics,Running on Faith,by Ifor Roberts, who also entertained with some top slide guitar blues, not often seen as part of a blues bands playlist, but he just loves to play slide,Charlie sang his heart out as per the norm, while Mr Strat did his stuff that you all know he can do,they all did a top job on the night,to finish off with my own fav Wonderful Tonight, played to perfection, people got up to dance,a perfect way to end a Wonderful night.

Well done to you all.More of the same in May.
