A little more about Tony the Toyger

So, I think I admitted that I as a point of reference I subscribed to "Cat Fancy" magazine.  Blush, my neighbor Dr. Rob kindly shared that his grandmother used to get that magazine (great, now I am the little old cat lady - without the old...as I am still under 42) -BUT....Cat Fancy Magazine did a spread on this cat called the Toyger! and wow - I don't know if we will have another cat after my current 15 yr bundle of joy goes to the great kitty beyond....but if we did, this would be one I really like (but not right away....I would need years to get over my little furball.)  Now with the toyger painting I did go off the beaten path a lot and gave it my own touch, only really keeping the orange stripes and green eyes.  Instead of making this exact, I took liberties with some green tones that livened up this little kitty's face.

I still liked the name Tony, like Tony the Tiger, "it's GRRRRRReat" although I wouldn't touch the cereal with a 10 foot pool (it's Kashi these days) -

So check out my auction!

Acrylic Cat Painting 8x8" with 10" Black WoodTable Easel Original Artwork

Painting Title:  Tony the Toyger

Animal Art Cat Painting Maine Painter

Wet Paint Studios (est. 2001) is the passion of Maine Artist Lori Rae who has been painting Pet portraits for art customers over the last year plus. This small painting cat measures 8x8" started out being based on a Toyger cat, but I took serious liberties and made it a bright colored combination of olive green tones with orange stripes.  I love it. Cats have always been a remarkable subject matter for me, their personalities are so translucent and it's easy to capture their spirit on canvas.

Keeping your head on straight

lollilogomini.jpgEver have so many variables going on with situations in your life, that you can barely keep your head on straight? That’s me right now.  Not that I have to have certainty at all times, but it seems like I maybe have three or four situations that are undeterimed.  Of course all of them will have happy or unhappy endings from today until mid-December - but until then I can just take a deep breath and eat dark chocolate.  I have learned that in my mature age that obsessing over “what ifs” is a bad idea for me.  It hasn’t kept me from trying to control my stress in healthy ways though - going to the gym, um, chocolate’s healthy, right?  I guess my husband is right and patience is not one of my big selling points, but patience is over-rated - or not, I am just to antsy to practice good patience.

I guess at the end of the day, writing this is therputic and all I can do is try to forge forward and figure that maybe things will work out the way they are supposed to.  That doesn’t always mean it will be the way I want it or the easy way.  Life works in mysterious ways.  Thanks for reading.

Black Friday Art Blitz!

Ebay Holiday Blitz Now Ending 11/29/7

With the recent sale of one of my cat paintings I decided that it "may" have been purchased as a gift.  Since I did not want to all the non-virtual store fronts to have all the fun on Black Friday (or the Day after Thanksgiving) - I decided that I would list several items (staggering a bit) for action starting today - this thursday all ending at some point next week.  At that point I will go back to my one painting per week for just a few weeks - then on December 9th I will blitz again for one week with last minute ideas.  It is with great thanks to the community on and offline that supports the arts that this time of year normally trims down my inventory.  I am still giving some thought to switching subject matter in 2008, which makes my cat paintings that much more valuable.  Look for new posts tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night and thursday. PINK is my current primary auction & shes a cutie!  Also, a few people have asked about the cat cards....they will be back on ebay if supplies hold out after non-virtual holiday sales - look for these December 9th.

Thank you for your support!

Holiday shows

snowman.jpgI love doing Holiday Shows because generally people are really cheerful.  Unlike the crowd at the mall with the cranky faces & angry parking lot altrications; the people that come to annual art and craft shows really want to be there.  It's something new, rare, a once-a-year-event and there is always new talent and products.  I find that most people are pleasant and nice to talk to.  I have three different venues for Holiday Shows this year and they are all really different.  One is all barter (not just for art, for lots of different things) - and last year I moved much of my older artwork at that show.  This year I will also offer this group Holiday Cards - Cat Cards - and limited selection of some of my newer work.  One show is three days!  Yikes, I am having a friend help me for this show-it's too much to set up on my own, plus I have many products that require some attention (mix and match cards, you pick the number.)  The good news about the second show is that once you set up, you are all set for three days!  The last show is a group show with a gang that I have been with for five years.  It is in a friend's studio and this group and I all take shifts to work the show!  After December 9th, sans some last minute holiday commissions, I get a bit of an art sabatical (at least til the first of the year.)

I have been preparing for these shows all year, but I really put in my time next week and next weekend.

Thanks for checking out my blog

You've got all the information you need to move forward with whatever plan is most important to you. If you're concerned about circumstances changing on the fly, let go and assume the best.

I think I mentioned that I am job searching and I have some promising prospects but am not counting the eggs before the chickens hatch them.  My horoscope today is very ironic. My employment needs also have to meet the needs of my art, which will create a fine balance of steady income, creativity and sanity. Wish me luck.  News about offers or not this week.

Bright Eyes

Recently I subscribed to "Cat Fancy" Magazine (a free offer for unused Frequent Flyer Tickets) - the Magazine that my neighbor said he remembers his grandmother getting (yee gods, I feel old) - anyways, it's been a great source of reference for me. For instance the issue I got last night when I returned home from work features some type of hybrid cat called a "Toyger" a very orange stripie looking feline that is really cute.  I may have to do a Toyger Painting this weekend.  Now I'm really a "cat lady" because not only do I look at the pictures, I actually read the articles an then....I save the issue to give to my sister, a true cat person because she has two cats!  My lastest painting Bright Eyes is using teals, greens and accent of browns and Mars Black to give this blueish feline a bright-eyed look. This piece is done in acrylic with a gloss coat to give him a sparkle.  Thanks for reading my blog!

A sweet story from Furr Website

Flyin' High

Escaping New Orleans before the arrival of Katrina were 6 year old Bryce Kaltenbach, her best friend, orange tabby Buddy; her mom, Cheri and a family friend. In Vicksburg, MS, they learned they could not go home. Bryce and her mom boarded a bus to Phoenix, but could not take Buddy along on the bus. Bryce was heartbroken. Cheri's friend, David, drove to his family's home in Orlando, taking Buddy with him in his car. So there they were, Bryce and Buddy, over 2,000 miles apart.

FuRR learned of the situation and it caught our hearts. Bryce's world was turned upside down, and we learned that she cried every night for her Buddy.

Enter FuRR volunteer and pilot Dave Cuttino. Hearing of Bryce's unhappiness, Dave decided to help. He and two other pilots, Jason Strobbe and Ryan Webb, took a plane to Orlando and in a nearly 12-hour flight, brought Buddy to Little Rock. On the flight Buddy was totally comfortable - he roamed the cockpit and, I'm sure, helped the pilot!

Dave had planned to take Buddy the rest of the way home but Hurricane Rita came along and nixed all plans to fly a small plane. So another FuRR volunteer, Tracey Owens, donated frequent flyer miles for Buddy to fly from Little Rock to Phoenix. Volunteer Susan Loesch accompanied Buddy on the flight. He rode at her feet and, sporting a fatigue print bandana, was quite the attention-getter!

Reunion

Alma and Lorne Williams, at whose home Bryce and her mom are staying, cooked up the big surprise reunion. With video and digital cameras at the ready, Alma describes Buddy and Bryce's reunion: "When Bryce came in, I told her a friend had come by with a fabulous doll. (That wasn't too big a stretch!) I asked her to sit at the table, close her eyes and I'd bring it out for her. Buddy in arms, I quietly walked in and said 'OK'! She looked up and for a split second just looked stunned. In a little voice almost like a question, she said 'Buddy!' and jumped up to get him. She hugged that little kitty for so long I thought he might need CPR! She sat cross-legged in her chair, kissing Buddy and telling him how much she missed him.

"Bryce wanted to know how Buddy got here. I got out an atlas, turned to a double page map of the US and showed her Buddy's remarkable journey from New Orleans, first to Vicksburg, MS, then to Orlando. I told her about Dave the wonderful pilot who left Little Rock in a small plane. We traced the route to Orlando where Dave picked up Buddy and then flew right back to Little Rock. Then I told her about Susan, who doesn't even like to fly, getting on a big plane and bringing Buddy to Phoenix. We talked about how many states Buddy had been in or crossed. 'Wow,' she said with big wide eyes. Clearly Buddy has traveled almost coast to coast. We talked about all the people he met along the way who helped him on his journey, all his newfound friends who loved and cared for him. I know she is going to want to hear this story again and again. To her, this is a magical thing - and indeed it is."

I'm Home

Alma says Buddy is quite the love bug and has now endeared himself to everyone at their house - almost. "Some of the cats aren't quite sure what to make of this gangly orange boy, but they're so used to newcomers, the standoffishness won't last long." Bryce is elated to once again come home from school and find her Buddy right there, she says. "He's the first thing she heads for, even before she gets her backpack off. It's not New Orleans, but Buddy's here, so it's home again for Bryce." Next step, Alma says, is making a scrapbook, "Buddy's Miraculous Journey, courtesy of FuRR."

Giving for a Cause

Each of the Cat Paintings that I sell on Ebay will automatically donate 10% of the proceeds to FURR.  I have blogged about this in the past, but now that the pre-holiday season is upon us, I thought I would plug it a bit more.

Our Mission...

Is to rescue cats that have been abused, abandoned or surrendered to shelters that practice euthanasia as a means of animal control. We will actively promote and practice trap, alter and release, removing adoptable cats and kittens from feral/stray colonies to be re-homed. To work with other animal lovers and animal welfare groups to provide humane education and assistance to the public, encouraging them to spay and neuter their pets. To provide loving care, medical attention, socialization, and ultimately place all adoptable cats in loving homes.

Want to adopt?

We have many loving and very adoptable cats and kittens. Just click on "Adopt Me!" on the left of the page.

This web site contains only a few of our cats and kittens. If you don't see what you want, call the number given to ask for more information.

FuRR adoption fees are: Kittens under 6 months are $70, adults are $55. The adoption fee includes felv/fiv testing, a spay or neuter when the cat is old enough, and vaccinations already administered to the cat or kitten appropriate for the cat's age. Further required vaccinations are the responsibility of the adopter.

Our Wish List...

  • Most importantly, our cats are looking for their "forever" homes. We have lots of sweet darlings who are ready to fill your life with joy. Please click on "Adoptions" on the left to see just a few of our cats. If you don't see what you want, call or email us and we'll contact you.
  • If you can't give them "forever" homes, we still have fun felines who need a foster home, til they can be adopted permanently. We are so short of foster homes, we have more cats than there are fosters. The lack of foster homes is an extreme limiting factor in what FuRR can accomplish.
  • You can find more volunteer opportunities by clicking on "Volunteer" on the left.
  • Our cats can't get themselves to the adoption events and clinics by themselves. They would like a little help from volunteers who will show them at the adoptions events and transport them to clinics.
  • FuRR's furry felines also appreciate quality cat food, cleaning supplies, bedding, cat carriers, cat toys, just about anything needed to care for felines.
  • Let's not forget that thing that makes the world go 'round. Cash donations will buy many of the things listed above and will provide medical care and fund the spay/neuter clinics.
  • We are a federally approved non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.
  • You can donate by clicking on the Paypal icon above, or by shopping through iGive.com, or donations can be mailed to:

The Cat and the Moon

Black cats are thought by some to be ruled by the moon, the pupils of their eyes expanding and contracting with the waxing and waning of the moon.

Kiss the black cat, an' 'twill make ye fat; kiss the white one, 'twill make ye lean. - English Folklore

The Cat and the Moon

Moon-Cat!

The cat went here and there
and the moon spun round like a top,
and the nearest kin of the moon,
the creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
for, wander and wail as he would,
the pure cold light in the sky
troubled his animal blood.

Minnaloushe runs in the grass
lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet,
what better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
tired of that courtly fashion,
a new dance turn.

Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
from moonlit place to place,
the sacred moon overhead
has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
will pass from change to change,
and that from round to crescent,
from crescent to round they range?

Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
alone, important and wise,
and lifts to the changing moon
his changing eyes.
