Ebay Bans Homeschool Curriculum

Are there any other homeschoolers out there who are as incensed as I am about eBay's decision to ban homeschool curriculum?  They told me that it fell under their heading of "illegal, dangerous, offensive, or potentially infringing".  What are they thinking?  I have a mess of curriculum here that I can't sell, and needing money from it to buy curriculum for the new school year.  Does ebay realize how many people homeschool and how much business they could lose by ticking the homeschooling community off?  It's not just the fact that they won't let me sell it, it is the implications behind the decision.  Where do they get off telling me that I don't have the right to buy, sell, or own a teacher's manual???  How could I teach my children without it???

I don't know when it took effect, but I just had one of my listings removed today. It was a complete set of Chemistry books.
Here is the letter that I received from ebay:

Dear eBay member,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to our new policy on Teacher's
Editions/Manuals.

As you may know, eBay does not permit items that are illegal, dangerous,
offensive, or potentially infringing. Additionally, eBay has just
recently made the decision to prohibit the sale of Teacher's Editions of
textbooks and solutions manuals that are intended solely for use by
teachers. Since eBay strives to be a level-playing field, all Teacher's
Edition textbooks, manuals and guides will be covered under this policy.
Unfortunately, home schooling Teacher's Editions are not exempt from
this policy and this policy will apply to all grade levels.

At this time, eBay has used it discretion to prohibit such items because
they often contain special answer keys, exams, teaching tips, and guides
that are to be solely utilized by the instructors of such courses.
Multiple organizations and publishers have also voiced their concern to
us over such books that may only be purchased through educational
institutions by teachers.

I encourage you to review the policy, available in eBay's help pages for
additional information:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/teachersedition.html

Lastly, we appreciate the fact that you may disagree with eBay's
decision to establish this policy. If you would like to see these
policies change, or have suggestions on how to make the site better, you
may want to submit your feelings by completing the form at the following
URL:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/newtoebay/suggest.html

Although you may not see the policy change immediately as a result of
your e-mail, the appropriate personnel will be made aware of your
position on this issue.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Kimbal

Did your listings get pulled or did you ask ebay specifically before you posted your auctions. If it's the first, maybe someone who's selling the same items reported you in trying to get rid of competition? There's plenty of items out there that are questionable and don't get pulled(like used underwear HELLO!?) homeschool textbooks should not be a banned item. But that's my opinion.

Hi, I just got done selling a slew of homeschooling materials. I have to mention. One listing was pulled because of the "Teachers Manual" . K12 is pushing ebay hard on this issue, most of their listings are pulled. I can see where one might not want a standarized textbook to end up in the hand of a student. They would have to change everybook in every school. Books specific to Homeschooling should be allowed with answer keys.

This issue is still open. Ebay stated in their Town Hall meeting a couple of weeks ago that they understand the plight of homeschoolers. With regards to selling teachers edition textbooks, they said they haven't figured out the answer to this yet. First, they allowed it, but then they changed to not allow sellers to sell such books...because of complaints received from parents, teachers and book publishers. However, home-schooling teachers need the books so they are struggling to decide on a workable compromise. They also said that if a student shows enough initiative to buy and study a teacher's edition book, that's a good thing."

Please don't think that Ebay is picking on homeschoolers. I am a public school teacher and I cannot get teacher's editions from publishers, unless I provide proof to them that I am legitimately working in a school; and some publishers have asked me for faxes of my teaching certification. It is quite costly for publishers to research, and develop curricula and it is copyrighted. Many of the editions I get as complimentary copies have the corners cut off, to prevent them from being returned for credit. My husband, a Ph.D. research chemist at DuPont, had to go through a special permission process to order a teacher's edition of a math textbook. The publisher interviewed him extensively before he was allowed to order. From what I have observed, Ebay is following the same policies as the textbook publishers. I taught my children at home by ordering their textbooks through our local university bookstore - I didn't need the teacher's edition to the textbooks to teach them the material.

I surely hope that Ebay will not pull auctions that are homeschool material with teacher keys included in the auction or teachers keys sold in an auction alone that relate to different homeschool curriculum. Most of us that homeschool count on ebay to sell our old homeschool stuff to buy the next years books. I understand the publishers point but what stops those same owners of the book from selling it at a yardsale, swap meet, homeschool fair...etc. Kinda hard to control all the books that are out there. Plus it goes back on the parents, my kids aren't buying teacher's edition books off ebay...because I know what they are doing. Let's all be responsible and let the auctions go.

I did a quick check in just the textbook section on site & there are roughly 10% of the listing with a major homeschooling publisher in the title & that's just off the top of my head a few of the major ones. Then there's the support materials homeschoolers use for unit studies, extra activities, & helps with our classes. Really the homeschooling community is a huge participant in ebay when you get to thinking about it. We buy textbooks naturally but we also purchase items like microscopes, slides, globes, maps, manipulatives, educational games, reading books, supplies for our classrooms...stickers, idea books, folders, sheet protectors, school supplies, software, educational movies, models, post cards...the list is enormous. It kind of snowballs since unlike the public schools we can slow down & study subjects that interest us in depth & that are as varied as fossils to auto mechanics. We are a major buying and selling force on ebay & once I got to thinking of all the things we purchase just for ourselves and our school it's amazing... I'm in the same boat as many of you....I've got three grade levels of books here I need to sell in order to purchase our supplies for next year. While I've used other venues out there with success ebay is just so much easier & time friendly. I can generally make a little more on the other sites because of the fees I just liked ebay's set up better. Now I'm sitting here with loads of books & a list of needs as long as my arm. This policy has really cut into what is out there for us & I can't say that I'm very pleased about it. I've used the suggestion page for comments on this subject & I sure hope ebay is listening. Teacher books are a life saver when you have three different grades to handle. I just really don't get the reasoning behind this new policy. Can that many teacher edition textbooks being circulating that are current & how many children are out there hijacking their parents accounts to buy them. What really flips m

Hello,

As of today we have had, in the past 4 days, a total of three auctions pulled. Two because they were Abeka teacher's manuals and one curriculum guide that had several bids and 14 watchers. The latter was pulled by mistake (surely, since it is not even a teacher's manual). The auction is seasonally sensitive since school is starting or has started for most students. Ebay's 24-48 wait a.k.a "customer service" email format assists in frustrating this issue.

I am interested in letting everyone I come in contact with and many I don't about this policy and will run it to the news agencies. Anyone who has ideas about how to address this let me know. I hope Ebay becomes sinsitive toward this issue before it affects their customer base. That homeschooling base is quite large and capable of affecting their bottom line.

Shame on you ebay!! I am no homeschooler, but am really offended by your actions. You would ban the programs which taught the founding fathers, and other Western genuises, and for what...?? To mollify the Teacher's Unions? As a former university professor who has seen the corrupted nature of the academic world, and who knows how the exceptional student always has a worse time within the big educational institutions, I must strongly protest any action which undermines alternative educational approaches. We need more homeschooled kids, not less, and more alternative approaches. Textbooks are not "holy objects" which only anointed High Priests are permitted to handle. They are books, for god's sake! What you do smells of book-banning, in fact. THESE good people are allowed to read the books, but THOSE bad people are forbidden! I suggest, if you want to have some kind of "eBay thought-police" snooping out "crime in education", that maybe you should start an ebay site in Iran or Saudi Arabia, where they can integrate with the Mukbarat (the "Religious Cops"). Is ebay now going the way of Google, and will appease certain politically-powerful groups and socialist-oriented unions, just as Goggle appeases the Communist Party thugs in China? Helping to keep them in power? Will you also report to the authorities, anyone who is not a teacher who buys such a book? It is amazing that you cannot see how awful this looks.

I THINK THIS IS GREAT !! I enjoy seeing your pain and discomfort.

Many years ago when E-Bay would no longer allow the selling of firearms and certain other gun related parts and items
such as hi capacity magazines. That violated no law to advertise and when handled properly between buyer and seller
violated no law.
Where were you ?

" Oh ... ho ..hummm ...it's just a nasty old evil instrument of death. Curtailing them doesn't affect me.
Who's playing on Monday Night Football tonight honey ? ...... "
You didn't care about them being selective on the 4th Amendment , property , and the 2nd , firearms.
Now they hit your 1st amendment , speech , and your 4th Amendment property. A book.
Now it's , " What ... what !!! They can't do this !! "

Ebay is a private company. They can select who will and what will be sold on their site.
I don't agree with their policy on many items and I think they are hypocritical it the items they allow.
But I do agree with their right to do it.

I.E computers that are sold with software loaded on them with the warning by the seller , " ... if you do not own
the license to these programs you must erase when you receive the system ..... the software on this computer
is worth 5500.00.... "
You see a $300.00 computer sell for 1500.00 .
You do the math on that trade.

Now a bunch of you people cry and whine ... " it's not fair . It's not fair .... whaaaa ... !!!
I say GOOD.
Pain is a motivator. Extreme pain is an extreme motivator.
Maybe somethings can be change. Maybe not.

Ebay is like the House running a poker game.
You know it's not fair.
You know they allow their own brand of cheats at the table.
You know they discriminate.
But it is their table.
Besides ... it's the only game in town.
[ When a friend once tried to warn him to stay away from a particular game he knew to be crooked, Canada Bill responded: "I know, but it's the only game in town." }

Just so you know here's a copy of a letter I sent to Ebay.

Regarding the banning of "teacher's texts":

First let me say, I am not a teacher, home schooler or, for that matter, a Christian.
And, I have never bought such books.
I am, however, in favor of home schooling.
I am also suspicious of your motives.
The home schooling movement is highly charged politically and philosophically.
It should be a simple matter to create some sort of I.D. process to prevent students from having ready access to test answers, etc.
I suspect a hidden agenda here judging by some of Ebay's past policies.
If this conflict is not resolved in favor of free commerce (with some verifications as mentioned above) I will very likely curtail my activities/use of Ebay and recommend to others they do the same.
If the sellers of new (exorbitantly expensive) texts are putting pressure on you, you must tell them to take a hike.

As a more affluent homeschooler I can afford to purchase new materials directly from homeschool sources, but the people they are punishing are those who NEED to sell used items so that they may CONTINUE to homeschool the next year. E-Bay should be ASHAMED of itself for discriminating against POOR homeschooling parents. I will disable my account and never buy another thing should E-Bay not recind this act.

Regarding the banning of "teacher's texts":

Well, this sounds like the "TEACHERS' UNIONS" have finally infiltrated the fair market place. Tell me where academic information (freeedoms) are so highly controlled! You would think that these teachers' editions are "Restricted Secret" documents as delineated in US Government classification procedures. These Unions are paranoid about Charter Schools, Vouchers and Home Schooling. Why..because it threatens their tenure and disposible income. Quite frankly, these teacher editions are required by some of their colleagues, so that they know how to solve their own problems given to the students. Sounds kooky? No because I remember in engineering school being given difficult problems to solve. We went to the library for research on these problems only to discover that the professor instructed the Head Libraian in the college library to "Pull" all referance books relative to the problems off the shelf.

As some previous comments said......Hidden Agenda...You bet! Who is E-Bay to set themselves up as the retainer of academic books and then judge who is fit to read them. You can rest assured that a lot of discussions were involved in the backroom stabbings of proponents of home schooling. You only heard about it when the directive was put into place by E-Bay.

E-Bay has a responsibility TO COME CLEAN, ON ITS DISCUSSIONS WITH WHOM, regarding its censorship of academic materials.

Is E-Bay the new thought police on the block? If so the Buyers and Sellers here need to rethink their priorities.

This is the basic problem when the affluent (wealthy people) think that they have all the answers and can control everday peoples lives.

We have an old saying.........Those that can do....DO and those that can't do...TEACH!

In conclusion, review the past public monies that have been thrown into the public education systems....everbody has gotten rich off the system except the students. Where are the priorities????

I see the problem with the text books being sold, and kids getting a hold of the teacher's
edition of the book at their school. But my children have been in several schools over the
years, after they were homeschooled for their younger years, and the teachers have the books,
but they do not give the kids the questions and quizzes, and test out of the books, most of the time.
The questions, quizzes, and test in the books have been used for example problems / questions and study
material in the classroom. When it comes to the actual test of the material in the chapter, the teacher
passes out their own test papers which they came up with and printed out for each student. So there
is no way that the child can get a hold of the test questions that the teachers made up from ebay. I think
that ebay needs to change this policy back.

I suggest everyone whose upset read Orwell's 1984. The thought police are at it again. Does eBay really want to protect the teacher's union within the United States? They deliver a very poor product and it is way too costly. I think the federal government, the teacher's union and companies like eBay are so misguided. We are in a globally competitive landscape and the children in the US need a solid education to compete with their overseas rivals. Otherwise, their standard of living here in the US will continue to fall as it has been already. I would think anyone who is helping their children do better, through home schooling, should be supported not punished.

I know, if I was a kid at this time in history and discovered later in life that I was living "hand to mouth" as a result of a bunch of corrupt greedy adults compromising my education and my future because they only cared about what was in it for them, I would be incredibly angry.

I would like someone within management at eBay with a straight face and with a clear conscience post for all the the world to see that the teacher's union within the United States clearly demonstrates that they hold America's children as their primary priority. They pay their union dues and operate to fulfill their mission to delivering a better educational product and their greed is always put in check when this mission has the potential to be compromised.

Also, should this come as any surprise that yet another eCommerce based company sells out on principals? I mean should we expect anything less when American internet browser companies help the Chinese government sensor content to its citizens, because the companies are drooling over the lucatrive chinese market. I guess freedom as an ideal has it price and only some people are good enough to get it well others are sold out.

Its scary what companies will do to make an extra buck.

Oversight it may be, but they don't seem to want to make it easy to make our voices heard on this one, I finally sent it under the buying and bidding heading or something like that.....this is my comment, in case anyone up there is looking at these discussions
I would like to respectfully voice my concern about this new policy. I think there needs to be some sort of review in regards to books that are used for Homeschooling. Do you realize how many homeschoolers use your site? I want to know why you would be pandering to companies that write textbooks. They stand to lose a lot of money if people buy their books on ebay, just like any other company. Too bad for them. I think this claim that the answers are going to fall into kids' hands is a bogus argument. There may be kids that will do it, but is it really that pervasive of a problem? But it WOULD hurt their bottom line. They just have an easier way to argue without blatantly mentioning their bottom line - for the good of/ protection of children's education... I hope that you will not remove items that are not at all used in school systems, at least. This may take more work for you, to need people to monitor the difference, but this homeschooling force is not a group you need to offend.

Students that are bent on cheating will find another way to get the answers and once again the majority of honest people will pay the price for the few who are dishonest. Eaby... if you are listening... this is not a good trend for a great network.

Since when is it the responsiblity of a corporate entity such as eBay to pass moral judgement on whether to or whether not to sell books? You can buy/sell Playboy and Penthouse on this website but you can't buy/sell a home schooling textbook? Frankly, I find pornography offensive. Why doesn't ebay pull all the smut mags off the their site. Infringing? Infringing what, teachers unions? This whole thing stinks of "Fahrenheit 451". Businesses should do business. Businesses should not be in the business of corporate moral benchmarking. Whats next, ban the sale of Bibles or The Torah because it offends a Gnostic? Corporate brainwashing. You thought you were dealing with drones but low and behold many people on this blog have a conscience.

Another thing I find interesting after a random sampling of many peoples ID on this blog is that many who are against this foolish policy have 99-100% feedback ratings. Many are also veteran or seasoned ebayers. What does that tell you about those people? MOST OF THEM HAVE INTEGRITY and their feedback shows it.

Wise up ebay. Stop promoting your "special interest" agendas.

I am homeschooling my youngest child, who is a Junior in High School this year. This is our 5th year of homeschooling. Since we are a one-income family I buy most of our books and supplies on Ebay. I usually sell the previous year's books to have money to buy books for the new school year. In the last couple of weeks I had 4 A Beka homeschool book auctions cancelled because, along with the student text, they included either the Teacher's Manuals or quiz or test keys.

I do understand the concern some have about people other than teachers (or homeschool teachers) purchasing the teacher materials. I am registered with my state as a homeschool, and have my registration papers to prove it. This registration paper is also used at several places around town for Teacher Discounts. I would gladly provide this registration paper to Ebay if it would qualify me to purchase the materials I need and sell the items I no longer need on Ebay.

This new policy does not make sense at all. FREEDOM of speach is what we want! Guess as homeschoolers, we will just take our business elsewhere and search froogle, or other websites for our homeschool needs. If we cannot buy texts, we will pass on other merchandise also on ebay.

The problem appears to be how to create controls to keep these "teachers' edition" from being abused by enterprising students without discriminating against those teachers who are not members of the governmental monopoly. The eBay policy doesn't work because certain teachers are prevented from acquiring used texts. It seems like it shouldn't be impossible to mirror the real world controls in eBay's virtual world. How do the controls work in the analog world?? Are the books only sold to the schools themselves? And then issued to the teachers? Isn't there a way for homeschool instructors to identify themselves as legitimate teachers? Are they licensed or certified by their states? Why not set up a system whereby homeschool teachers would have to provide appropriate identification to eBay before they would be authorized to purchase these particular texts?

This is not a conspiracy, and it's not union related, and no one is attacking home schooling or Christianity. WND is misleading trash. Do yourselves a favor and research the issue instead of lashing out at everything around you because you read a misleading article. I'd hope you're teaching your children to do that type of research instead of teaching them to follow the ravings of a propagandist web site.

It's obvious, that it's a contrived fallacy for Ebay's categorizing teacher's editions of textbooks as in the category of being
"illegal, dangerous, offensive, or potentially infringing". It's pretty blatant that none of what they've listed would even remotely fit
in with what they've used as a reason. Being we're free to purchase the same book new from the publisher, this same reasoning
could be used for any used book sold on Ebay. Personally, I smell a rat. It appears to me that someone in Ebay's management has a serious prejudice against homeschoolers. Ebay's loss, being there's several other places that don't censor and that homeschoolers are free to trade and sell used items. Wonder what items next they'll decide to censor? Ebay better watch their step being once they decide to stop listening to their customer support base, they can bet competition will step up to the plate that will put their customers first. asmith12342000

Other than your ad hominem "lashing out," stormhit13, do you have a better explanation? It sounds to me like someone at eBay is either pushing a political agenda or is acting to protect textbook publisher’s outrageously inflated prices.
