Would You Believe the Most Slabbed CGC Graded Comic Book is.....

Who else but Wolverine in his first Limited Series #1 issue from 1982 with 3,640 Slabbed CGC copies in existence!!  (There is only 1 copy in 10.0 GEM Mint grade.)

Seems fitting that this is the mostly heavily slabbed CGC comic, after posting two earlier blogs today about Hugh Jackman who plays Wolverine in the X-Men Movies, and about the passing of Dave Cockrum who jumpstarted the New X-Men in the mid 1970's !

Sorry, but we don't have any of those 3,640 copies in stock...

... but you could try eBay as there are a few up for sale right now!

Or you could check out our 'MORE Ideas on What Gift to Buy for a Comic Book Geek for Christmas' blog post which is directly below this post for CGC graded comics we have in stock!!

OK You Hugh Jackman Fans! He Is Signed to Play Wolverine in a Prequel to X-Men Movies called 'Wolverine'! (What Else?!)

Tina is a huge Hugh Jackman fan!

So she and a whole lot of others have got to be excited about the PreQuel to the X-Men Movies, which stars Hugh as Wolverine in the movie called 'WOLVERINE' !!

Jackman has confirmed the script is finalized; production could begin in the fall of 2007 with a 2008 showing.

The Plot Summary is said to be as follows:
The mutant known as Wolverine breaks off into his off spin-off film from the successful X-MEN! franchise. Hugh Jackman (X1, X2, Van Helsing) returns as Logan/ Wolverine-A mutant with regenerative powers, three claws on each hand and a skeleton all laced with the rare metal known as adamantium. Logan struggles to find the secrets to his past. After learning little information through the help of Charles Xavier (X2's Patrick Stewart), Logan takes his search even further by learning the full truth of his origin, while also heading in a bold, new direction.

Looking forward to this movie!

In the meantime we will continue to list our Wolverine Comics at: Here and Here (X-Men Comic Books)

X-Men Artist Passes Away..... Dave Cockrum

Whenever I go to the San Diego Comic Con, (SDCC), I make it a point to attend the Golden and Silver Age Comic Books Creators Programs.

The main reason why is because so many of the earliest comics book creators lived and worked on the East Coast, and I was not able to attend Comic Conventions there on the East Coast very often in the past.

I have missed seeing so many of the Golden and Silver Age Greats because they didn't have a chance to come out to the West Coast for whatever the reason was. As an example it was great to see John Buscema on his one and  only trip out to SDCC, as he passed away before the next Con arrived.  Most of these Golden and Silver Age Greats are in their 70's 80's or older...

So it is a shock to see the obits of Bronze Age, (approx 1971-1984), Creators like Dave Cockrum. As the following states, he was a main catalyst in the revival of the X-Men, which had fallen into reprints before he and Len Wein took over:

"At Marvel Comics, Cockrum and writer Len Wein were handed the X-Men. The comic had been created in 1963 as a group of young outcasts enrolled in an academy for mutants. The premise had failed to capture fans."

"Cockrum and Wein added their own heroes to the comic and published "Giant-Size X-Men No. 1" in 1975. Many signature characters Cockrum designed and co-created -- such as Storm, Mystique, Nightcrawler and Colossus -- went on to become part of the "X-Men" films..."

Dave Cockrum was only 63....

'Griff' On Our Local Fox TV Station....Regarding Cyber Monday Sales

Just finished watching Jim 'Griff' Griffith of eBay Radio on our  Local Fox TV Station....Regarding Cyber Monday Sales.

Ironically, just as I was about to finish our earlier little blog post on what Cyber Monday means to our niche sales of comics today.

Griff''s name was shown on the TV and underneath it was shown that he was an 'eBay Express expert', which kind of amused me, as it seems that all of the press lately, whether or TV or in print media is about eBay Express.

However the piece on Cyber Monday, and the mentions of eBay, (in one form or the other), can't help but bring a little more awareness of the safety and ease of online shopping to those able to watch TV this early in the morning.

I usually listen to the eBay Radio archives when packing our comic book sales for shipment, so it was different listening to  Griff on TV and seeing him at the same time. I've only seen him in person once, while he was broadcasting live at the eBay Live 2005 in San Jose.

Good Job Griff !

CYBER MONDAY SALES?? - Niche Sales

Last year "Cyber Monday" was not very successful for us at our eBay Featured Store! Probably because we were only selling unslabbed comics, which do not make a big 'splash' when opening the package.

However this year we do have slabbed, 3rd party graded comics for sale, which are encapsulated within plastic holders and are very nice to view, and do make a 'Big Splash' upon opening the package they are mailed in. These are perfect gift items for collectors as they are sealed to certify the 'grade' of the comic book encapuslated.

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving, which is supposed to be the busiest online shopping day.

According to some new info this year, it appears that MAY no longer be true for the holiday season of 2006. I know for us that most of our auctions are closing on Tuesday, due to eBay's listing sale Tuesday of last week. We ran 3, 5 & 7 day auction listings, none of which could be closed today.

We do have a few Fixed Price/Submit Your Best Offer 'core' listings that could be closed today however, and approximately 1,300 store listings. (Plus over 4,000 more listings in our eBay Pro Store at www.MakeItSoMarketing.com )

Just as "Black Friday" (the day after Thanksgiving) used to be the busiest time for B&M Stores.... however, that has also changed according to recent research. Now it's said to be the weekend before Christmas, namely Saturday. We do not have a brick and mortar store, so that would not include us. Matter of fact we usually take a vacation week during that period of time as it's too late for mailed items to arrive in time for Christmas by then.

The below photo shows what an encapsulated third party graded comic book looks like from us. We only deal in CGC 3rd party certified comics, which are the most popular 3rd party graded comics.

The above are my thoughts on this Cyber Monday morning, and how it affect niche sales like ours!

Any comments??!! Michael

What to Buy for Christmas for a Comic Books Geek ?? Here's One Possibility

It is really hard to buy a Christmas present for a Comic Book Geek or Collector !

Too often what you think he/she would like they already have.... or in a different format.

Today, publishers print a lot of trade paperbacks that combine previous comic book issues that the collector may already have.

I personally don't like trade paperbacks, because if I like the title, I probably already have the single comic book issues that are collected in the trade paperback.

Graphic Novels are not the format I normally like my comics in, but then again I am a 'little' older now, then when I started reading comics in the late 1950's.

However one item that I always love reading is a subscription to a magazine about comics.

One in particular is CBG, (Comics Buyer's Guide), which went from newspaper format to magazine format a couple of years ago.

Besides being able to read it more easily in magazine format, it is also easier to store for ready reference.

The magazine talks about the old days, as well as having articles on current features.

The following is a blurb about the current issue #1625:

The Justice Society of America has regrouped at DC and Comics Buyer's Guide #1625 features an exclusive original Justice Society of America cover by Mark Sparacio.

After reading about the relaunch of DC's original super-team including an interview with writer Geoff Johns, take Captain Comics' JSA quiz.

Then, revel with The Captain and his 15 minutes with comics legend Stan Lee!

And, it's nearly Thanksgiving, so Mr. Silver Age presents his annual Mopee Awards to more comics turkeys of the Silver Age.

John Jackson Miller has compiled a decade of comics sales figures and analyzes how the industry has changed from "Heroes Reborn" to "Civil War."

Finally, Peter David looks at exactly what makes a hero heroic.

All this and more, plus the largest and most complete monthly price guide in comics.

I would give this ongoing magazine an 'A', and would recommend giving it in subscription form as a great gift for your comic book friends! And no, we don't sell subscriptions to this great mag!

To subscribe just click on the pic of the current issue's cover below:

Additional blog posts will contain more thoughts on great items for Christmas in the upcoming days!

"Submit Your Best Offer" - Option Still Not Understood by a Lot of Buyers

We have used the "Submit Your Best Offer" Option for our comics for quite a while.

However we still have buyers that don't understand the option or overlook it when buying.

Which makes me think that other potential buyers just skim past the listing altogether, thinking that they can't or don't want to afford the comic book at the price listed, even though they could submit an offer.....

We have most of our expensive eBay Featured Store items with this option, as well as low grade comics that we are looking to clear out of the eBay store instead of moving them to our eBay Pro Store, (www.MakeItSoMarketing.com)

When someone purchases an item from us, with the full BIN price without using the SYBO option, then we will include an extra comic in their package or some other sort of rebate, as our way of thanking them for their interest in our listings.

With SIS (Search In Store) no longer highly visible, we want to make our listings attractive to potential buyers, but still make a decent margin to allow us to stay in this business. Additionally the recent Store fee hike makes it impractical to keep inexpensive 'oddball' comics for up to a year before being 'found'.

'Core' listings, unless they are CGC graded comics, just don't do as well for us now as they used to, possibly because of the hundreds if not thousands of other eBay members who are looking to sell some of their comics at very low starting auction prices. Take a look at 'completed' listings for comics and you will find multiples of auction listings closing at 99cents, without high shipping costs. They can't be in 'business', and are probably trying to recover some of their original cost so as to purchase new product from their LCBS, (Local Comic Book Store).

This is not a 'complaint' blog post, just thinking about what I read on a Stores discussion board post where it was discussed that eBay may be getting ready to charge a fee for 'Best Offer' !!!

Comic Book Character Rip-offs

We spent this past weekend strolling around various shops and street stalls in Los Angeles and were amazed at the high volume of knock-off comic book character novelties for sale.  Spider-Man, Batman, The Thing, and the Hulk would all have a fit if they could see their rip-offs hanging next to the cheapo leather-imitation purses, fraying hats and faded T-shirts.

Buyer beware:  If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

If you're looking for holiday toys for young people or the young at heart, look for the licensed logo of the comic book character's creator.  Authentic toys will have Marvel, DC Comics, etc. logos embossed on the product packaging.  Speaking of packaging, we saw several items that were clearly opened and resealed - with scotch tape.

Take a good look at the artwork of the product you are considering.  With stickers and posters, take a close look at the faces - if they're fuzzy, or worse, all the characters look the same, you're being ripped off.  With action figures, you'll spot a rip-off easily if you compare figures.  If they look like they were made from the same mold - especially the facial features - you are being ripped off.  It pays to familiarize yourself with your child's favorite comic heroes before you make a purchase.  This way, you'll avoid buying The Thing action figure we saw in dark brown skin tone with long bright blue pants.

When it comes to buying comic book character novelties, you get what you pay for.

What Exactly are CGC Graded Comic Books & Why Should You Care?

That is a question that we asked earlier in our eBay selling career.

For some time now we have been selling our comics as 'raw' comic books, meaning that they were 'unslabbed', and not graded by a 'third party'. The 'raw' comics were graded by my husband and then bagged with boards inserted to protect the comic book until it was sold.

My husband, Michael, has been a reader of comics since the late 1950's, a collector since the early 1960's, sold as a dealer at the early 1970's  San Diego Comic Cons, and has the experience of finding great deals at comic book conventions for sale in my eBay Featured Store in the 2000's.

We have all three of the Overstreet Grading Guides, and our grading has been praised in many of our eBay positive feedbacks.

However, no matter how good you might think your grading is, there is always some prejudices involved while grading.  Michael doesn't particularly like slightly mis-wrapped covers and downgrades for those, but others would not.  Some collectgors are a little more fussy about misplaced staples, while others place more emphasis on the spine.  How does one get around this grading dilema?

Well, we have been watching the 3rd party grader, CGC, for a while.  We finally decided to ship off several comics for their grading and encapsulation. Why? Because 'slabbed' encapsulated comics are becoming a 'commodity' instead of a collectible encased inside a plastic holder.

Indeed, there is even at least one web site that shows how CGC graded comics are faring sales wise and price wise. We have subscribed to the service at www.gpanalysis.com for CGC graded comics sales history.  The history goes back to September 2002, so there is now a little over four years of history.  That is why we know that one of our current CGC graded comics, Fantastic Four #17 in CGC 9.2 grade, is the highest known copy (per GPA)of that issue for sale, ( and will be when it hopefully sells at or above our reserve price),  since 2002.

CBG, (Comics Buyer's Guide) has a great book out, called Standard Catalog of Comic Books 4th Edition, that we also have, but being in print makes it not as current as GPA is.  Plus it is a little unwieldly being so bulky.  However it is a great reference for those that don't want to pay a monthly fee for a service such as GPA. CBG also has a monthly magazine that shows the latest averages for NM 9.4 CGC sales for popular comic book titles.

Back to the main theme of this post.... With 3rd party graded comics, even though there are some questions on their grading standards on some discussion boards, at least the comic is stated to be a certain grade, which the seller and potential buyer can recognize that an authority is stating as such.

Otherwise some sellers would tend to overgrade while some buyers would tend to undergrade, and in older comics a 'half grade' difference can mean hundreds of dollars. The 'slabbed' comics have a seal, which when broken, voids the stated grade. A picture of me holding some recent CGC slabbed comics can be seen below.

While we will continue to sell 'raw unslabbed' comics, we will be joining the growing numbers of dealers who are submitting their 'raw' higher grade books to CGC for grading.  It is far easier from a marketing standpoint to have the large decimals at the top left of the holder show exactly what stated grade the encapsulated comic book is.  Additionally each slabbed comic comes with a certification number that can be looked up for additional details about the graded comic.

This post is not meant to be an endorsement for CGC, or any other 3rd party grader, it is meant to state that in the current evolution of e-selling on the internet means that standardization has to be in place, and we have decided to  Make It So for our current and future customers!

Thanks for listening!

Tina

They're Coming.... Soon.... Who?? ..... Why TMNT.... 3-30-07

That's right.... TMNT !!!!   Turtles in a half-shell !!!

I remember when my boys first started watching the TV Show.... and it sounded so good.... that I joined them !!

They then started their own collections of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, the Archie Series, which we added to at the SDCC making purchases there.

The TV show became a little formula-driven with rehashes of the same plot, but we did check out the movies and they were ok for live action fun....

Anyway, for a great teaser movie trailer, check this out !!!

Would You Believe the Most 'Watched' Comic We Have Right Now Is........ SIMPSONS COMICS #1 !!

We get used to having many of our comic books being placed on individual eBayer's 'Watch Lists'...

Seems that after paydays, several of those comics do get purchased, and are no longer being 'watched'.

Usually those comics being watched are popular super-hero issues, or the unusual western TV comic book with a photo cover that is hard to find in decent shape and commands a premium price.

However tonight's most watched item for us is the recently listed CGC graded comic book SIMPSONS COMICS #1 in 9.6 grade. That would not normally be one of our most watched items but below is probably the reason why:

I have attended a couple of the Simpsons Panels/Programs at the SDCC in the past, and found them to be fully attended with standing room only, so I know that the SIMPSONS has a large and fanatical following. I have enjoyed watching the TV show but never got into reading the comic book series on a regular basis, mainly because there is so much comic book product out there right now.

The issue I am referring to above is a 'homage' to the Fantastic Four Comic Book #1 from 1961 which is why I originally purchased it when it was first published. It was part of my once complete FF collection.

The portrayal of the Simpsons as the FF and the Mole Man's Monster is quite ignenious.

There have been other 'homages' to the FF #1 cover, but this homage is the best one IMHO.

Homer as the Monster is too funny..

Marge as the 'Invisible Girl' as she was known then is perfect...

Lisa as the 'Thing' is alright,

the baby as 'Mr Fantastic' all tied up is too cute,

and Bart as the 'Human Torch' is right on!

This issue truly is a great 'homage' to the classic FF cover!

(And the interior pages were great too! Unfortunately when comics are third party graded they are encapsulated so as to preserve the integrity of the grading.)

What is a TrackBack and How Does It Relate to Your Blog Post?

At the bottom of a blog post should be a link that says 'TrackBack'.

A 'TrackBack' links to another blog that is referencing that particular post.

So when you post a comment about a blog post in another's blog, leave a link in your post that directs your reader to that original blog post that you are referring to.

This 'TrackBack' is a feature that enhances the connecitvity of Web pages, and gets your blog seen by even more people!

I've been reading other books on blogging, and find that eBay blog templates do not have all the frills that other blog web sites have, so am sharing major points that I find while researching that could be added manually to your blog posts...
