BAG and BOARD Your Inexpensive Comic Book Collectibles !!!
It's the LEAST You Can Do!
No matter where you found the comics, if you bought them or if they were given to you, the very LEAST you can do is to protect them until it is time to either give them away or attempt to resell them!
There are multiple sellers on eBay that sell inexpensive plastic bags, made especially for comic books, so there really is no excuse not to!
The only thing is when buying the bags, is to buy the right size for the comics you are trying to bag! Comics have 'shrunk' during the decades, so older comics from the Golden Age of Comics (from approx 1938 to 1950's) are put into bags that say 'Golden Age on the package!
Silver Age Comics, (from approximately mid 1950's to early 1970's), need a smaller size to fit properly, and the 'Modern Ages of Comics' including Bronze, Copper and whatever else 'age' they want to call them, have their own even smaller size!
Wait a minute! Now that your comics are in a protective specially designed inexpensive bag, how are they going to fit nicely and keep from bending, when you put them into whatever storage container you are keeping them in?
Never fear, there are also comic backing boards, that are specially made for the comics. Just as bags are usually sold in 100 count packages, so are comic backing boards. You can check eBay's listings for those also, as we don't sell these type of supplies.
In an upcoming blog post I will go into more depth on what type of bags and boards to buy. This blog post is just to tell you that there are comic book collecting supplies to protect your comics until you are ready to sell. I see way too many sellers selling comics without protection!
If however, you decide NOT to sell your comics, and find that you have been bitten by the 'collecting bug' then check out our eBay Featured Comic Book Store and eBay Pro Store for more comic related collectibles!

Paper 'Whiteness' For Collectors of Comic Books !!
What is the OWL Card and what does it mean to YOU as a collector???
Well, 'OWL Card' stands for 'Overstreet's Whiteness Level Card' which is a very handy card to use when grading comics!
Besides checking for tears, stains, writing, store stamps, fold, and other type of defects, you must also check for the 'whiteness' of the pages!!
Wait a minute! Weren't the old comic books printed on newspaper type of paper? How could that paper stand the test of time and be white???
Well, that is where this card comes in handy, as when you find a comic book listed with a different level of paper color you now know what it signifies!
For your collecting of comics you should buy an Overstreet Grading Guide, and an OWL Card. Just check out the eBay auctions for a copy of your own! (Sorry, we are keeping our copies!)
However, after you have check out your comics with the OWL Card, and find that you want to upgrade to a better grade of the comic book, check out our CGC encapsulated comic books in our eBay Featured Comic Book Store and eBay Pro Store for high grade collectibles!

Raquel & Superman.... How Did I Miss That ?!!
Was looking at the DVD section of eBay's Reviews to add on another review when I ran across the fact that one of my favorite actresses, Raquel Welch, had been a guest star on the second season of "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman"! She was a Trash TV Host in an episode name 'Top Copy!
How did I ever miss that episode ??? Yeah, I basically watched for Teri Hatcher.... but I must have been sleeping when Raquel's ep came on !!!
It is so cool that more and more DVD collections are coming out on old TV Shows now! And that we can buy them on eBay (or rent them elsewhere)!
If you were a fan of Lois and Clark, or the old Superman TV show from the 1950's like I was, you could check out our Superman comic books in our eBay Featured Comic Book Store and eBay Pro Store for more great reading and/or collecting! Sorry, but I will be looking for this DVD collection for myself, LOL !

David Hasselhoff as....
Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. !

|
Earlier this month my youngest son and I checked out the 1997 TV Movie, Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD.
I had missed it when it first was aired, and taped it earlier this past week for viewing with my son. This movie was made before Marvel Comics started to make it big with Theatrical Movies of their super-heroes like Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc.
This TV movie was not up to par with the above named theatrical movies.
David Hasselhoff tried to portray Nick Fury in the movie, but he just didn't make it for me, too much of a caricature for me...
Lisa Rinna was the 'Contessa', but she didn't come across either for me. Come to think of it... none of the actors really portrayed the characters that have a long history in the comic books.
Unfortunately there was too much background info to give to the viewer all at once, and it just wasn't done right. This is a poor example of a comic book movie, sad to say.
For those interested in Marvel comic books, from which Nick Fury is derived, we have several listed in both our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store.

VOODOO CHILD....
the Illustrated Legend
of Jimi Hendrix
This is one sharp graphic novel !
Being a child of the mid to late 1960's, Jimi was one of the mind-blowing rock stars that I listened to, although I never saw him in concert.
I basically listened to his pop hits on the AM / FM radio stations during my high school years until I went to college. Then having my own pad I bought his albums at a used record store in downtown San Diego and listened to them.
I have never been one to bone up on the rock artists' personal lives, so this graphic novel really enlightened me as to what I didn't know about Jimi ! 'Far out man' !
The graphic novel uses snippets of Jimi's lyrics as commentary on the action at the appropriate moments, so as to heighten the drama of the guitarist's colorful life. I found this to be a cool way of getting the scene across to the reader.
I am not normally a fan of Bill Sienkiewicz's art, but this is a great showcase for his style of art. For those interested in Jimi Hendrix and a fan of comic book style of art, this is a 'must read' for you ! Additionally there is a 30 minuted CD of Jimi's home recordings that come with this graphic novel! We don't sell this item, you can check out other eBay sellers or your usual book venues to purchase this item!
However for those interested in rock star comic books we have a few rock n' roll comics in our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store.

Roy Thomas,
Comic Book Writer...
... Will be a Special Guest at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con International show July 26-29, 2007 !
Roy is recognized as the first fan to make it as a 'Pro' back in 1965. I remember when he first started writing, taking over some of the titles that Stan 'The Man' Lee had to let go as the Marvel Comics line was expanding. Indeed it was Roy 'the Boy' Thomas who pioneered for other fans to break into the business. I especially enjoyed his run on the Avengers, and the Invaders for Marvel.
I first met Roy at an earlier SDCC, where pictured to the right, he signed several Fantastic Four Comics for my personal collection. He was fun to talk with, and I enjoyed meeting him in person. It is hard to believe that Roy 'the Boy' is now 66 years of age and supposed to be officially 'retired'!!
For those interested in comic books that Roy wrote, both for Marvel and DC Comics , please check out our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store!

The History of Blackhawk....
'Blackhawk' was a 1950 ABC radio series that was adapted from the long-running Blackhawk comic book about the team of World War II aviators from Quality Comics. It was an unsponsored half-hour show that aired on Wednesdays nights at 5:30pm.
Michael Fitzmaurice, (1908-1967), portrayed the team leader Blackhawk. The radio series premiered on September 13, 1950 and concluded a few months later on December 27, 1950. It is thought that there were only sixteen episodes in the entire run.
I first discovered Blackhawk in the early 1960's when it was published by DC Comics. I did not know that the series was a continuation of Quality's earlier series, and that DC had picked up the numbering with #108.
Quality Comics had the Blackhawk feature debut in Military Comics #1 in August of 1941, and Blackhawk earned its' own comic title in 1944.
DC Comics picked up the title in 1956. The comic became a little outdated by the mid 1960's because it was still about the aviators adventures so DC revamped the Blackhawks into super-heroes with issues #230 - 241 but it just didn't go over sales-wise. The revamp didn't do anything for me either.... Then the comic was changed back into its' original premise but lasted only two more issues before its' 1968 cancellation.
By the time DC Comics attempted a short 1970s run (#244 to #250) I had quit reading the series. Indeed, my original interest were the stories with the Nazi operative Killer Shark and Lady Blackhawk whom Killer Shark changed into Queen Killer Shark. Those stories piqued my interest just from the covers!
For those interested in Blackhawk comic books, we have a large run of issues in our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store.

Just Finished Watching Last Night.....
The 'Warrior Princess Trilogy' VHS set which was originally shown on the Hercules: Legendary Journeys TV Show!
My youngest son had not seen this trilogy, as he was too young when it first came out, and he was curious about this VHS set of tapes.
I told him that Xena of Amphipolis was a fictional character in the now ended television series Xena: Warrior Princess and also in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. She was played by the New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless, pictured to the top right.
Xena first appeared on the Hercules: The Legendary Journeys television series, (in the episode The Warrior Princess airing in March 1995), as a seductive but treacherous warlord.
Two more episodes during the May 1995 TV sweeps presented her evolution from a villainess to a friend and ally of Hercules. Viewer interest in her was so high that shortly afterwards she became the main character of her own spin-off series Xena: Warrior Princess, and the two series quite often played back to back.
Ironically though, her character was originally obsessed with defeating Hercules and thus obtaining his title as the greatest living warrior, she never did defeat "Zeus' Favorite Son". As a matter of fact, Hercules was the one credited with pointing her down the path of redemption when he beat her in combat and showed her that selfishness and greed were not the way to live.
In her own TV series, Xena set out to redeem her murderous past by fighting against tyranny and evil and protecting the innocent and weak. I personally caught the show after it had started and began watching the rerun episodes to catch up. A lot of her past would remain obscure, but flashbacks would open up new chapters in her past as she revisited the people or areas again.
Kevin went on to play 'Kull the Conqueror' in the movie of the same name, which was set in the days before 'Conan the Barbarian' and was also created by Robert E Howard! (See movie poster middle right photo.)
My son already knew about Xena Comics as he helps me interfile those comics in boxes! He asked if I had any other Xena tapes... Unfortunately no!
For those of you interested in seeing Xena in comic books from Topps in 1997-1998 or Dark Horse 1999, we have several listed in our eBay Featured Store and even more in our eBay Pro Store. Xena was published as mini-series by Topps, while Dark Horse published one unlimited series. Topps has variant photo covers as well as drawn comic covers for those issues.

"Don't You Dare Miss Model Leah Samonte.... LIVE As 'Lava' ....
And Pick Up a Copy of Lava #1"
That was what the promotional flyer read, as it was passed out while we stood in line outside the Convention Center! My sons and I were waiting to enter the 1997 San Diego Comic Con ten years ago this summer, and were anxiously waiting to get inside to see all there was!
Leah Samonte was there to greet all those who entered the 'Independents' Section of the Con, (actually the Small Press area), and of course I had to have my sons get their picture taken with the model.... Dads do that you know !!
