"Submit Your Best Offer" - Option Still Not Understood by a Lot of Buyers

We have used the "Submit Your Best Offer" Option for our comics for quite a while.

However we still have buyers that don't understand the option or overlook it when buying.

Which makes me think that other potential buyers just skim past the listing altogether, thinking that they can't or don't want to afford the comic book at the price listed, even though they could submit an offer.....

We have most of our expensive eBay Featured Store items with this option, as well as low grade comics that we are looking to clear out of the eBay store instead of moving them to our eBay Pro Store, (www.MakeItSoMarketing.com)

When someone purchases an item from us, with the full BIN price without using the SYBO option, then we will include an extra comic in their package or some other sort of rebate, as our way of thanking them for their interest in our listings.

With SIS (Search In Store) no longer highly visible, we want to make our listings attractive to potential buyers, but still make a decent margin to allow us to stay in this business. Additionally the recent Store fee hike makes it impractical to keep inexpensive 'oddball' comics for up to a year before being 'found'.

'Core' listings, unless they are CGC graded comics, just don't do as well for us now as they used to, possibly because of the hundreds if not thousands of other eBay members who are looking to sell some of their comics at very low starting auction prices. Take a look at 'completed' listings for comics and you will find multiples of auction listings closing at 99cents, without high shipping costs. They can't be in 'business', and are probably trying to recover some of their original cost so as to purchase new product from their LCBS, (Local Comic Book Store).

This is not a 'complaint' blog post, just thinking about what I read on a Stores discussion board post where it was discussed that eBay may be getting ready to charge a fee for 'Best Offer' !!!

I have the best offer option on many of my store items as well, and it seems rarely used. Most of the times it IS used, the offer is incredibly low - $10 for an item listed at $30? Be serious people! Still, it can be a good dialogue starter for a serious buyer, and HAS worked for me in the past a few times. I sure hope ebay doesn't start charging for this - if they do, I might have to just cancel my store altogether.

texastesla: Thanks for your post!

We find that using the new feature of 'counter-offer' to work for those low-ball offers that have come in.

My concern is that a lot of eBayers don't know how to use 'SYBO', so are passing up some potential good buys by not even trying to submit a decent offer....

I don't have a store. I might some day. When eBay did the 10 cent fixed price BIN listing, I did them all with SYBO. I was wondering if buyers were using it to full advantage -- or for that matter if I was. What I do notice is that SYBO has quite a bit of overhead for eBay involved. I can see them benefiting by making it free, because it increases their chance of picking up the FV fee. But I think I would rather see a reduced fee schedule for BIN, and maybe a premium (small) for SYOB.

Say I think something ought get $60. I can start an auction at $9, paying 35 cents, and hope for the best. Or I can make it BIN at 75, rejecting offers under $50. But that costs what? Isn't it $2.40? Ebay doesn't have to administer an auction -- just record a sale -- with BIM. And they have to deal with the deal sheet with SYOB. But my point is -- i don't think naming my -Most I can hope for price- ought have the same fee schedule as my -Least I can accept price- -- Expecially when I get less service from the BIN than for the Auction approach.
