Archive - January 2007 What is irregular blanket binding? What should I look for when purchasing irregular blanket binding?Posted Jan-30-07 13:13:37 PST Updated Feb-07-07 14:45:48 PST As a large seller of sewing and crafting trims on eBay, I am asked this question frequently. Usually, any blanket binding that is not in original packaging is irregular binding with the exception of binding sold in rolls or by the yard, which may be either irregular or first quality. Check with the seller to determine which it is if the listing isn’t clear. Like packaged binding, irregular binding is 4 inches wide unfolded, 2 inches wide folded (it comes folded) and 100% poly satin (washable and dry cleanable). Sometimes this binding has a break / factory join and so it is not in a continuous length, or there is a slight color difference from the ‘master’ color, or there may be almost unnoticeable variations in the sheen. Irregular binding is marked at the factory with a permanent black or dark blue mark about 8-10 inches from the beginning of the bundle. Like regular binding, there’s usually 4 ¾ yards per ‘bundle’, but as previously noted not all of this length will be usable. The quality of irregular binding often depends upon how much care the seller takes in avoiding bundles with factory joins / breaks or other noticeable marks and defects. I guarantee my customers a minimum of 3 usable continuous yards (most often there’s 4 – 4 ½ yards) or I’ll replace the shorted bundle free of charge. Check with your seller to ensure that there’s some minimum yardage you can expect. Given that packaged first quality blanket binding can cost as much as $6 per package, irregular binding can be an economical purchase.
