eBay falling Apart or Pulling out of a slump?

Another interesting article entitled, “What's in Store for EBay? Outlook Hazy”about the state of eBay.

From where we're sitting, it looks pretty chaotic. eBay's CEO is out playing politics; one of the highest-ranking executives is publicly trashing the business; and customers are apparently planning a revolt. There are roughly 248 million registered users  on eBay -- and while not all of them are going to be happy, the company's listings fell 3 percent during the first nine months of 2007, which indicates that a huge chunk of its customer base is taking its business elsewhere.

What do you think—are eBay sellers ready to revolt? Be sure and check out the comments on the article. Some of them are quite interesting.

honestly I think they are falling apart. Old processes, aggressive buyers, even more aggressive sellers. Over all not a nice bunch of people.

I got ripped off by a Chinese seller here this Christmas, between eBay and PayPal's antiquated processes it took over 30 days to get refunded. Dealing with eBay with no customer service is a nightmare, too many automated form letters that sya everything and nothing. so I went to paypal, who did the exact same thing. It is easier to deal with Amazon, and Liquidation than this environment.

the lack of response and tendency toward too rigid processes and procedures, makes this a difficult environment.

I agree. The worst thing about ebay is the horrible customer service. It's like there is this huge uncontrolable animal that nobody owns. Makes one wonder (like in the Wizard of Oz): is there even a human behind the curtain? The online customer support and/or live chat is like trying to communicate with a robot, a 4th grader, or someone who has no command of the English Language or the language of ebay. So it's no surprise that the customer care/service is all farmed out overseas (Mannilla or India) and it's no wonder that canned boilerplate responses that are already available on the internet is all the help knows how to cut and paste.

What's also tragic is that ebay supports these huge 150,000 item mega sellers (like White Elephant Media) who never answer emails, won't respond to dispute console complaints, and then give retaliatory feedback to any buyer who leaves well-deserved negative or even neutral feedback. By the way, I advise anybody who wants to buy DVDS, CDs, or videos to stay away from White Elephant Media. That outfit is a nightmare waiting to happen. They finally get around to communicating with irrate buyers only after they leave the retaliatory feedback. Then, in a fashion reminiscant of blackmail, they send out automatic emails to everybody they gave negative feedback to and try to bribe them into mutally withdrawing the negative feedback. I'm not kidding! Go check out their feedback! Over 1300 mutually withdrawn negative feedbacks. The written feedback remains, but it gets withdrawn from the feedback scores. Hundreds of people have complained to ebay about this seller, and ebay just continues to let them screw people over. Ebay allows them to make a mockery out of the feedback system and allows them to thumb their nose at the dispute console system. It appears that ebay is more concerned about the greasy dollars they get from these dishonest power sellers like White Elephant Media than they are about the way this outfit totally diss

Revolt? I can remember when was the last time I sold on eBay. I guess I could check but why if i'm not really going to be selling here. I like eBay but the fees and customer service aside make them my 4th or 5th choice. This recession is going to make sellers rethink things and look elsewhere. Many sites to try and ideas to be open to. I like the smaller auction sites with smaller fees. I like the trading sites with specific items showcased. Some new site - jooxter.com - puts a new spin that combines old and new auction ideas. I had a question sent in to jooxter and they answered me the very next day. I'm watching this site closely. The bottom line is that you can go elsewhere and be successful as long as you work at it. I'm basically done trying to work at it on eBay.

I, too, have had it with Ebay. Their customer support is totally slanted
toward the Seller. Out of 1,643 feedbacks, only 3 are negative. All of
the negatives were a result of my filing a negative feedback because the
Seller sent me something totally different than what was bid on, then wanted
me to pay to ship the item back to him! The last negative, today, was a
situation where I paid for the item but added a note stating that the shipping
cost was excessive and that I would check the postage and file a complaint with
Ebay. The postage would have been .84 cents versus they were charging me $10.
The Seller, in a fit of rage, cancelled the transaction and refunded the payment.
He stated reason for refund was he did not have the item in stock! (Then why
was it put up for bid?) Within minutes of making the refund, Seller then
relisted the item! Not finished with this, Seller than filed a non-payment
complaint with Ebay, who agreed with him! Finally, Seller posted a negative
feedback on ME saying 'Buyer paid with a fake money order' !! Payment was
made through Paypal which I can of course prove! I have hired an attorney
to sue Ebay and the Seller for slander. This is one Seller who is going to
regret he ever heard of Ebay.

It now appears that ebay does not police its sellers, especially the company ones who are tending to bait and switch and pull items that are not selling for what they want. IE they have an undisclosed minimum that they are willing to sell for and if they dont get it they sideline the item to make it appear as a sell when in fact that is not the case. Of course ebay wants to see the higher sell price to pump them up but all they are doing is pissing of customers. Why not take your business elsewhere?

I think that ebay is in a self distruct mode. Now requiring all sellers to accept Paypal and having to accept credit cards is going to drive the small and casual seller out of the market. If I sell something for $1.00 I could possibly have to give close to half of that in fees and other charges. I'll throw the item in the garbage first. They are going to force the small seller out. Maybe this is their plan? I for one am done with ebay.

EBAY BLEW IT, THEY HAD A GOOD THING BUT IN THIER EFFORT TO IMPROVE DROVE AWAY MANY COLLECTIBLE AND ART SELLERS LIKE US. WE ARE NOT BOX STORE AND THE PAYPAL FEES ARE TO HIGH ALSO TO RISKY FOR US AS SELLERS, AND THAT PAYPAL CAN TIE OUR FUNDS UP FOR AT LEAST 21 DAYS MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO PAY OUR MORTGAGE. THE FINAL STRAW IS EBAY WILL NOT LET US LIST ANYTHING NOT JUST CERTAIN DESIGNER PIECES OR ELECTRONICS AS THEY STATED IN THIER APRIL NOTICE TO SELLERS. WE WERE GRANDFATHERED IN AND ASSURED WE WOULD STILL BE ABLE TO SELL EVEN THOUGH WE DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL. WE HAVE OUTSTANDING FEEDBACK OVER 2250, WE ARE SILVER POWER SELLERS AND EARN OUR LIVING DOING THIS EBAY HAS STOPPED US COLD FROM LISTING AS OF TODAY 8/21/08...WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO LEAVE EBAY, WHAT A POOR CORPORATE DECISION. EBAY STOCK IS FALLING AND THIS IS NO GOOD FOR ANYBODY. I WISH THEM WELL AND DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOUR ASS ON THE WAY OUT. I SEE A NEW CEO ON THE HORIZON.REMEMBER IF IT AINT BROKE DON'T FIX IT... THAK YOU FOR LETTING ME VENT, GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS...EBAY SITE PENNYANDMILO
